La Mauritanie abrite un réseau d’aires protégées relativement complet et représentatif en ce qui concerne les écosystèmes marins. En revanche, il pourrait être complété par les parties terrestres. Les principales pressions identifiées dans les parcs sont la transformation du milieu, l’exploitation minière, la surexploitation des ressources terrestres et des ressources marines, la pollution et le développement de certaines infrastructures.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges.

Protected areas have proven themselves to be an effective tool for the conservation of biodiversity in situ. However, conserving biodiversity, even in protected areas, is a challenging assignment for most countries around the world where governments and local communities are often in competition for access to and use of resources. On top of these challenges, the world is facing changes in climate and sea level, increasing numbers of invasive species, and fragmentation of forests.

The 35 independent countries and territories which make up the Caribbean region are home to a great diversity of ecological, cultural and historical features. They share a number of remarkable characteristics including high levels of biodiversity with a huge variety of endemic and unique species.
