El proposito de las presentes directrices es actualizar las directrices originales publicadas en 1980, teniendo en cuenta la evolucion que ha tenido lugar desde entonces y las problematicas emergentes. La evolucion incluye avances importantes en materia de derecho ambiental internacional y un mejor conocimiento cientifico del papel que desempenan las areas protegidas en la conservacion medioambiental, (incluyendo acciones encaminadas a conservar la biodiversidad, mantener las funciones de los ecosistemas y apoyar el desarrollo sostenible).
