Sustainable development

This publication portrays life in the Pamirs and addresses development challenges and options, along with insights and awareness related to the potentials and difficulties of mountain regions in general. The purpose of this book is not only to survey the status of a particular mountain region, but also to contribute to discussions of practical and participatory approaches that can lead to sustainable mountain development. 

This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. 

It is hoped that this publication will encourage the balanced integration of sustainable economic growth, social protection and justice, and environmental stewardship in the Sustainable Development Goals. 

Released at the opening of the Bonn Climate Change Conference on 1 June, Climate 2020 builds on two prior reports by UNA-UK. With articles from over 50 expert contributors, Climate 2020 considers the prospects for the UNFCCC meeting in Paris this year, including the potential for interaction between the proposed climate agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

This paper provides an analytical framework for assessing the impact of international trade in wildlife and wildlife products on conservation and local livelihoods. It also explores the role of factors related to particular species and their habitat, governance settings, the supply-chain structure, and the nature of the end market.

Globally rainforests are under threat on numerous fronts, yet they have a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and providing other ecosystem services. Rainforests are also attractive tourist spaces and where they have been used as a tourism resource they have generated significant income for local communities. However, not all use of rainforests as a tourism resource has been sustainable.

In an increasingly crowded world reconciling environmental ‘conservation’ with the ‘sustainable use’ of natural resources is now our greatest challenge. Nature conservation has traditionally focused on protecting iconic and important areas of biodiversity from human exploitation through the establishment of National Parks and World Heritage Areas.

While Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have bountiful supplies of renewable resources and an island culture that is iconic of paradise, the challenges ahead are daunting. While the future cannot be predicted, the development of plausible futures built on combinations of realistic outlooks can offer a basis for policy choices. This report shows that there is much that SIDS can do proactively to anticipate environmental problems and their economic consequences or even avoid

As an active member of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO and the Netherlands National Committee IHP-HWRP organized the workshop ‘Water allocation and green growth’ in cooperation with the Government of the Netherlands.
