Sustainable use

A publication showcasing successful bog and some fen restoration projects across the UK was recently launched. A variety of case studies illustrate opportunities for restoration and sustainable management as well as innovative ways of engaging people in conservation action for bogs. This publication was launched at the symposium 'Investing in Peatlands - Demonstrating Success' jointly hosted with the British Ecological Society.

This paper examines how interventions intended to improve functionality and productivity of forested landscapes to improve livelihoods of the poorest populations, might actually yield co-benefits in terms of biodiversity conservation. It argues in favour of a ‘landscape’ approach to achieve these co-benefits.

This book is designed to help conservation organisations, community-based organisations and protected area managers plan and run effective ecotourism businesses. It was created as part of the Business Skills Transfer Programme for Ecotourism Development, a joint effort by IUCN and Kuoni Group aimed at supporting conservation organisations in managing ecotourism-related businesses through business skills, knowledge and experience sharing.

This paper documents insights and lessons about using markets and incentives to strengthen forest landscapes and livelihoods. It aims to interrogate just what a ‘landscape approach’ means in economic terms, to identify how markets can be used to generate incentives to share forest benefits more equitably and sustainably, and to highlight which kinds of approaches and ‘packages’ of interventions can assist in this.
