Wetlands

Wetlands have been the focus of conservation and restoration efforts for over a century, and governments, international actors (NGOs and academia) and local communities around the world are now increasingly engaging in wetland restoration or avoiding wetland degration activities for climate change mitigation.

This publication presents 18 case studies to demonstrate how Protected Areas (PAs) can be better managed for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA). The chapters vary from scientific studies to good practices, as well as (existing or required) policy frameworks that enable appropriate management. The book presents approaches from different regions and aims to cover a range of hazard events as well as a variety of ecosystem types.

Sweden has the highest variation in wetland types within the EU, and after Russia, it has the largest wetland area in Europe. The Swedish Wetland Survey (VMI), which covered all large wetland sites except the ones in the alpine zone, took place between 1981 and 2004. The purpose of this report is to make information about the wetland survey available outside of Sweden. The report is a compilation of excerpts from the national final report.

The Himalayas are the water tower of Asia and are a precious resource to be used wisely and protected for human welfare, research and eduction. Cranes, a flagship species of waterbirds, have great cultural significance - especially the Siberian Crane. Yet, even after decades of conservation efforts, cranes remain threatened with 11 species at risk.
