Mexico

This publication is the proceedings for a satellite event on Biodiversity and the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, held on the occasion of the Ninth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, in FAO, Rome, 12-13 October 2002. An informal presentation of the Satellite Event’s discussions and results was given on 16 October 2002. About 100 participants attended the day and a half event.

Many environmental and social benefits will result from implementing activities to tackle emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote the conservation of forest carbon stocks, as well as from the sustainable management of forests and carbon enhancements in developing countries (REDD+). Benefit sharing in REDD+ refers to the ways in which the financial benefits resulting from these activities will be distributed among different local stakeholders within a country.

La implementación de las actividades para reducir las emisiones procedentes de la deforestación y la degradación forestal en los paises en desarrollo, para la promoción de la conservación de los acervos forestales de carbono, la gestión sostenible de los bosques y la mejora de los acervos de carbono (REDD+) generará diversos beneficios ambientales y sociales.

Twenty-eight biologists, managers, and decision makers attended a Population Viability Assessment (PVA) Workshop at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose, Texas on 22-24 October, 1990 to apply these recently developed procedures to the captive and wild populations and the reintroduction of the Mexican wolf.

The potential for numerous amphibian species to go extinct in Oaxaca and Chiapas is high and worthy of being considered a major environmental problem. This report summarizes the findings of a project aimed at gathering information at 16 sites in southern Mexico which had been identified in 2005 as being essential to the continued existence of 22 highly threatened amphibian species, the hope being that it could help initiate conservation action.

La obra que se presenta ilustra las regulaciones y procesos necesarios en cada uno de los paises de la región para alcanzar lo que podríamos denominar la legalidad en el aprovechamiento forestal y exportación de madera. Se muestran aquí las fortalezas y retos de los diversos sistemas desde el ángulo jurídico. 

Las áreas bajo protección privada merecen un reconocimiento y respaldo mucho mayores que el que reciben en este momento.

Privately protected areas deserve far greater recognition and support than is the case at the moment. Private conservation efforts can often fill important gaps in national policies in terms of both geographic cover and speed of response to conservation challenges, yet they remain a hidden resource: ignored by governments, omitted from international conservation reporting mechanisms and left out of regional conservation strategies.

The impacts of oil palm plantations have been widely ignored, and given widespread promotion of these plantations throughout the tropics, the World Rainforest Movement decided to bring together research and local struggles in this book, aimed as a tool for action. Presented are three representative cases for each continent -- Cameroon, Ecuador and Indonesia -- as well as a general overview and examples from other countries. 

This study compares compensation approaches taken with respect to impacts on biological diversity in selected countries from four different continents: Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. Background on specific legal and institutional frameworks for each country are elaborated and assumptions for further research are formulated.
