An attempt is made to explain the myths and beliefs that drive the utilization and trade of owl and their body parts. A number of recommendations are also made to address the illegal owl trade in India.

This document constitutes a summary of the work, studies and reflection initiated by the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) following the recommendations of the Contracting Parties in Almeria in January 2008. It provides answers to the request to assess the knowledge gathered on the effects of climate change on the Mediterranean coastal and marine biodiversity. More information is still needed but the effects of climate change on the sea and the Mediterranean littorals are already most perceptible and affect without exception the different components of the Mediterranean biome. They also affect the natural resources and threaten the benefits they have for the populations around the Mediterranean basin and there are also social as well as economic repercussions.

Over 20 years ago, concerned farmers’ groups in Kenya and Burkina Faso began to adopt new measures to conserve soil and water and to re-establish trees in their fields. Two videos, "Looking after our Land" and "Building on Traditions", recorded the new participatory approaches for land conservation being developed at that time in various countries. More People, More Trees returns to the same communities, and some of the same people, in Kenya and Burkina Faso to document developments since the original filming. The film shows spectacular changes: most obviously more trees planted and protected by the people themselves aided and encouraged by continuing community projects. More People, More Trees thus highlights a demonstrable success story for community participation in agricultural change in Burkina Faso and Kenya. In this film, the landscapes tell their own story, but so do the local people. The accompanying book expounds upon the powerful messages in the film and describes the technologies employed by the communities, provides hard data to support their testimonies, and looks at the current challenges of soil conservation in the context of climate change.

Breeding strategies for sustainable management of animal genetic resources
   

Genetic improvement is an essential component of the management of animal genetic resources and can make important contributions to food security and rural development. Yet, the majority of developing countries have not been successful in sustaining breed development programmes. The objective of these guidelines is to help countries plan and develop effective genetic improvement programmes and to maximize the chances that such programmes will be sustained. They are intended for use by policy-makers and organizations involved in livestock development. They provide practical advice on how to identify livestock development objectives and strategies and define breeding objectives that are in line with them, match animal genetic resources to production systems and identify the most appropriate breeding scheme, initiate or improve straight-breeding or cross-breeding programmes and evaluate investment decisions.
