This book provides a concise and persuasive overview of the values of protected areas. Contributing authors examine a wide range of values that are maintained in protected areas, including cultural and spiritual values, and how they relate to issues such as food, water, materials, health and tourism, as well as capacity for buffering against climate change and natural disasters. The book also considers the role of protected areas in poverty reduction strategies, and their relationship with traditional and indigenous people and in fostering conflict resolution through 'peace park' initiatives.

Using an expanded set of complementary indicators, the report documents the changing state of biodiversity, ecosystems and humanity's consumption of natural resources, and explores the implications of these changes for future human health, wealth and well-being.

Die Rote Liste Brutvögel wurde gemäss den Richtlinien der IUCN nach zehn Jahren von der Schweizerischen Vogelwarte Sempach revidiert. Sie ersetzt die 2001 erschienene Liste der gefährdeten Brutvogelarten der Schweiz (Keller et al. 2001), die ebenfalls bereits nach den Kriterien der IUCN erstellt wurde. Der Anteil der gefährdeten Arten am Total der 199 beurteilten Arten ist mit knapp 40 % gleich geblieben. Bei knapp einem Viertel der Arten ergaben sich Änderungen der Einstufung.

Die umfassende Analyse zeigt auf Basis der besten verfügbaren Daten und differenziert für unterschiedliche Aspekte der biologischen Vielfalt, wie sich die Biodiversität in der Schweiz seit 1900 entwickelt hat. Die Resultate zeigen, dass weiterhin ein großer Handlungsbedarf besteht.

UNDP's Environment and Energy Group is pleased to publish this Report which will be a cornerstone for future approaches and policy dialogue on the economics and management of ecosystem services. The Report highlights the economic contribution of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services to development and equity in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is to serve as an economic tool for decision makers so that ecosystem services are considered in sectoral and national planning. Ecosystem services are used as proxies for biodiversity since they are easier to connect with sectoral outputs.

   

The third FAO Expert Advisory Panel for the Assessment of Proposals to Amend Appendices I and II of CITES Concerning Commercially-exploited Aquatic Species was held at FAO headquarters from 7 to 12 December 2009. The Panel was convened in response to the agreement by the twenty-fifth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) on the terms of reference for an expert advisory panel for assessment of proposals to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and to the endorsement of the twenty-sixth session of COFI to convene the Panel for relevant proposals to future CITES Conference of the Parties. The objectives of the Panel were to: i) assess each proposal from a scientific perspective in accordance with the CITES biological listing criteria (Resolution Conf. 9.24 [Rev. CoP13]); ii) comment, as appropriate, on technical aspects of the proposal in relation to biology, ecology, trade and management issues, as well as, to the extent possible, the likely effectiveness for conservation.

   

Part 1 of this final report outlines current global environmental problems and serves as an introduction to the entire report. Part 2 gives the results of the Conference discussions. Chapter 1 summarizes the data and reference materials that were submitted to the Conference, and demonstrates how serious current environmental problems are by giving actual data on global warming, loss of biodiversity and others. Chapters 2 and 3 summarize the results of the discussions. Here the Conference proposes the concept of a "solar energy-based society" as a new societal vision (image) for the 21st century together with the measures to be implemented to achieve that vision. In light of heated discussions which took place at the Conference, the report presents the highest common factors that all members agreed with, including the concept of a "solar energy-based society."

This paper will review the performance of existing routes in the Middle East and North Africa to glean lessons for proposed pipelines in Southwest Asia. With sufficient political will -- and a more informed understanding of the binding power of pipelines -- the United States, European countries, and international bodies can begin to utilize pipeline construction as both an engine of cooperation and a tool of diplomacy. What is needed is a longterm policy outlook that integrates energy transit and transport as part of a broader framework for economic and security cooperation. In this vein, the paper proposes a number of policy recommendations for both the international community and countries directly involved in pipeline source, transit, and point of demand.

As a contribution to clarifying the contested claims, IIED, UNEP-WCMC and the African Wildlife Foundation organised a symposium in April 2010. The purpose of the symposium was to explore the current state of knowledge and the evidence base for claims and counter-claims, in order to better understand what is assumption rather than fact. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines across academia as well as from conservation and development agencies, the symposium included case study presentations, a series of state of knowledge reviews, panel discussions and posters.

The big idea we explore here is banking on biodiversity. This approach rests on the fact that much rural poverty is concentrated in the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Der derzeit prognostizierte Klimawandel wird für Natur und Landschaft ebenso wie für die Landnutzung tiefgreifende, wenn auch noch nicht in allen Details und Konsequenzen absehbare Folgen haben. Im Rahmen des Forschungsvorhabens „Einfluss veränderter Landnutzungen auf Klimawandel und Biodiversität“ wurden umfassende Informationen zu den bereits feststellbaren und erwarteten Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zusammengetragen und in diesem Band veröffentlicht. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Buches bildet die Darstellung der Klimaschutzwirkungen der wichtigsten Ökosystemtypen in Mitteleuropa sowie ihrer unterschiedlichen Nutzungen. Dabei wird insbesondere auf Reduktions- und Minderungspotentiale hingewiesen. Synergien und potentielle Konflikte zwischen den Zielen des Naturschutzes und des Klimaschutzes im Bereich Landnutzung werden gesondert diskutiert. Zur Verfügung stehende Instrumente werden im Kontext einer Mobilisierung ungenutzter Potentiale analysiert und Empfehlungen zu deren Weiterentwicklung erarbeitet. Die Ergebnisse des Vorhabens beruhen auf einer intensiven Literaturrecherche sowie auf Gesprächen und Diskussionen mit Fachleuten. Das Vorhaben will den Handlungsbedarf sowie die Handlungsoptionen für die Politik aufzeigen und die Thematik stärker in das öffentliche Bewusstsein transportieren. Ziel ist es, Synergien von Natur- und Klimaschutz künftig verstärkt in Strategien naturverträglicher Landnutzung zu integrieren und umzusetzen.

Today, it is generally accepted that socioeconomic issues play a pivotal role in determining the success of efforts aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Yet there is still a great deal of incertitude as to how and to what extent these issues should be taken into account. In order to resolve this situation, it is necessary that the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) agree on a suitable set of socioeconomic parameters and on how these should be monitored and evaluated. The report develops recommendations for socioeconomic monitoring in the framework of the ecosystem approach. It identifies ten topics as generic dimensions that are strongly anchored in processes and bodies of the United Nations. The observation of these generic dimensions should help to fulfil the CBD’s requirement that the socioeconomic situation should not be harmed by measures carried out within the context of the ecosystem approach. Moreover, specific (e.g. regional) assessment standards can be determined according to the different socioeconomic givens. With this in mind, it is recommended to add a second ‘layer’ of procedural rules that allow for the assessment, negotiation and priority-setting at the regional and local levels. These two elements should allow for an effective and efficient improvement of socio-economic monitoring for the purposes of the CBD.

This report is a contribution to the UN's International Year of Biodiversity and is a complement to the UNEP-hosted Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) which is bringing visibility to the wealth of the world's natural capital. It documents over 30 successful case studies referencing thousands of restoration projects ranging from deserts and rainforests to rivers and coasts. The report confirms that restoration is not only possible but can prove highly profitable in terms of public savings; returns and the broad objectives of overcoming poverty and achieving sustainability. It also provides important recommendations on how to avoid pitfalls and how to minimize risks to ensure successful restoration. "Dead planet, living planet: biodiversity and ecosystem restoration for sustainable development" is part of UNEP's evolving work on the challenges but also the inordinate opportunities from a transition to a low carbon, resource efficient Green Economy.

This volume has been compiled to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, which for half a century has been the UN organization responsible for fostering intergovernmental cooperation on global ocean science. It draws on the experience of 30 international experts to look at how governments use science to establish ocean policies, with chapters ranging from the history of ocean management to current advances in marine science, observation and management applications, and the international agencies that coordinate this work. With a focus on key topical issues such as marine pollution, exploitation and hazards, this publication reflects on past successes and failures in ocean management and emphasizes the need for knowledge and effective government action to direct decisions that will ensure a sustainable future for this precious resource.

Since 2004 Germany established ten Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the German Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ, 12-200 nautical miles zone) of the North and Baltic Sea as a contribution to the European Natura 2000 network. The main target of the coherent network of Natura 2000 sites is to reach a favourable conservation status of habitats and species. Even though commercial fisheries is known as one of those human activities in the marine ecosystem with the most severe negative impacts on habitats and species, fishing activities in the designated Natura 2000 sites are almost unregulated up to now. To analyze the impacts of fisheries on habitats and species in Natura 2000 sites and to develop site specific management plans the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) had initiated in 2006 the research and development project “Environmentally Sound Fisheries Management in Marine Protected Areas” (EMPAS), which was accomplished by the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES). EMPAS was a pioneering approach in Europe, which benefited by the participation of different scientist from marine and fisheries biology, as well as stakeholders from the fishing industry and nature conservation. This book gives a comprehensive overview of the process and the results of the EMPAS project as well as the scientific advice for management measure in marine Natura 2000 sites given by ICES. A further chapter presents presentations given at the international conference “Marine Natura 2000 sites and Fisheries management: The results of the EMPAS project” November 2008 in Stralsund. Environmentally Sound Fisheries Management in Marine Protected Areas (EMPAS) in Germany gives a fascinating insight in the process and main outcome of this project from which also other EU member states may gain a lot of information and experience in order to fulfil the tasks of developing appropriate fisheries management plans for Natura 2000 sites in European waters.

Terrestrische und semi-terrestrische Lebensräume an den Küsten von Nord- und Ostsee stehen im besonderen Maße im Spannungsfeld verschiedenster Nutzungsansprüche. Bemühungen zum Erhalt naturnaher Biotope konkurrieren in diesem Bereich u.a. mit Anforderungen des Hochwasserschutzes, des Tourismus und der Landwirtschaft. Betroffen ist auch eine ganze Reihe von Lebensraumtypen von europäischer Bedeutung. Im Rahmen einer im Mai 2009 veranstalteten Experten-Tagung des Bundesamtes für Natur-schutz an der Internationalen Naturschutzakademie auf der Insel Vilm wurden verschiedene etablierte, aber auch neuartige Managementverfahren zum Erhalt dieser Lebensräume vorgestellt und hinsichtlich ihrer mittel- bis langfristigen Wirksamkeit diskutiert. In diesem Tagungsband werden die Beiträge zu geeigneten Managementmaßnahmen in Dünenkomplexen, Salzwiesen, Poldern und Kögen sowie in Ästuarien dokumentiert. Weiterhin wird auf die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels eingegangen, die im besonderen Maße die Lebensräume an der Küste beeinflussen werden. Schließlich werden die wichtigsten Handlungserfordernisse aufgezeigt, um den Rückgang der biologischen Vielfalt auch im Bereich der Küsten und Ästuarien zu stoppen.
