This synopsis has been produced to highlight the core aspects of the first three volumes of Natural Capital of Mexico, which gives us an overview to identify priorities for future attention, new research areas and options for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Mexico. The synopsis provides a significant amount of supporting information which, within a conceptual framework can be adopted by different orders of government to help define public policies with an appropriate balance between two key axes in order to progress toward sustainability: the social welfare of Mexicans and best management practices and conservation of Mexico's natural heritage. The framework used was based in part on the "Millennium Ecosystem Assessment", but was adapted to the particular circumstances and characteristics of Mexico.

This resource is a compilation of resources for communicating the work of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), which might be useful for outreach activities organizations might wish to undertake related to the findings of the MA, on the importance of ecosystem servicse and actions that can be taken the better manage ecosystems and their services. The key message of this publication is that the occurrence of the global economic and financial crisis and the interrelated climate, food, and water crises offers a window of opportunity to embark on a path of more resilient and sustainable economic growth. The key challenge is to avoid responding to the crises with measures that perpetuate economically, socially and environmentally unsustainable production and consumption patterns. The key opportunity is to seek ways to respond to the crises by identifying dynamic synergies to initiate change. Developing countries can seize real opportunities for cleaner growth, including low-carbon growth. This report argues that, while complex and long, the process of greening economies can and should be gradually piloted towards selected "poles of clean growth". A successful combination of sound economic and ecological management of such poles would steer economies towards more environmentally friendly development and, hopefully, generate positive spillover effects in other sectors, even under conditions of no or imperfect internalization of many key externalities. The review offers three illustrations of promisigin poles of clean growth, especially relevant to developing countries: energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energies for rural development.

Written by a team of independent experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report 2010 analyses the trends and developments that have shaped scientific research, innovation and higher education over the past five years. The report depicts an increasingly competitive environment, one in which the flow of information, knowledge, personnel and investment has become a two-way traffic. Both China and India, for instance, are using their newfound economic might to invest in high-tech companies in Europe and elsewhere to acquire technological expertise overnight. Other large emerging economies are also spending more on research and development than before, among them Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and Turkey.

This report considers the status and trends of pan-European biodiversity in a range of ecosystems, and the implications of these trends for biodiversity management policy and practice. It considers the key biodiversity policy instruments currently applied in Europe, the threats to biodiversity and the management implications of such threats across major habitat types. The report makes use of Streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators (SEBI 2010) and other relevant national and regional information sources that the European Environment Agency coordinates.

Futurability is derived from the German zukunft (future) and fähigkeit (potential or ability). "Sustainability" and "sustainable development" are globally recognized modern terms. However, both of these include the meaning of "maintaining the current status quo". Yet, there can be no future for mankind if the aim is to prolong the current situation which our world is confronted by environmental problems. Therefore, RIHN uses the word "futurability" to encapsulate a viewpoint in which we consider how the future environment should be, and from there examine the present to find what actions should be undertaken now to reach the future. Thus, "futurability" is an important research guideline for RIHN. This is a PowerPoint educational presentation for university students taking general subjects. The 11 chapters (500 slides) contain text photos and illustrations in an easy-to-understand yet comprehensive presentation about biodiversity from various viewpoints, such as ecology, folklore, sociology and economics. The slides come with clear notes and comments for lecturers. The presentation can be used as is, or individual slides used in combination with other presentation files, etc.

Like all the Arguments for Protection series, this report is primarily an attempt to assemble evidence about the positive benefits that can be provided by protected areas, in this case focusing on human health. Benefits explored here range from various ways of accessing genetic material to use as local or global medicines, to the use of wild, open and quiet spaces for physical exercise and emotional healing. We also give practical advice for both protected area managers and health professionals about how these benefits can best be realised and what this means in terms of day-to-day management.

This report summarises the findings of a study, conducted between 2001 and 2002, which aimed to test the effectiveness of these strategies in reconciling biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development interests, in particular through interventions that both improved livelihoods and resulted in increased support for biodiversity conservation, in terms of the attitudes and behaviours of local communities. The study reviewed some of the common assumptions associated with ICD interventions, specifically those that seek to link local people to park resources and those that seek to break this link.
