One of the main reasons cited for inadequate representation of biodiversity in the development processes is a lack of readily available information on inland water taxa. In response to this need for basic for information on species, the IUCN Species Programme conducted a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 2,261 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs and selected families of aquatic plants from throughout central Africa. This study is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, and the knowledge of regional experts.

Qualified, competent and committed staff are central to the success of protected areas. Training of protected area (PA) staff is more and more recognized as a vital component of efficient protected area management. As well as being an essential tool at local, regional and national levels, capacity building for PAs now has a strong international context and is being embedded into major global conventions and PA-related decisions. The principal goal of PA staff training is to raise the capacity of PA managers to adapt to new challenges, using innovative and creative approaches. These Guidelines treat each training course as a project that follows the classic project cycle: from identifying training needs through resourcing, development and delivery of training to assessment of the use of the competences acquired.

This publication provides an overview of the world’s shared water resources and insights for managing these resources. Using case studies from around the world, it describes the benefits to be gained from cooperation and the challenges of constructing legal frameworks, institutions, management processes and financing and partnership strategies to govern transboundary waters equitably and sustainably.

In this report, highlights of CEC activities in 2010 are presented. The Commission engaged in initiatives supporting the IUCN One Programme, with an emphasis on communicating biodiversity. CEC pursued partnership activities with IUCN members, the Secretariat, other Commissions and key external partners — extending the theme of partnership across generations to engage young professionals. To strengthen its network, CEC selected more National Activators and expanded its engagement tools and activities.

The purpose of this study is to advise State Parties to the World Heritage Committee on nonpolar deserts as potential World Heritage Sites of Outstanding Universal Value with a focus on geomorphological aspects. It also discusses some of the issues relating to the integrity and management of these areas and the need to conserve them.

As part of a comprehensive strategy to highlight and help prioritize urgently needed conservation action for the most critically endangered turtles and tortoises in the world, the Turtle Conservation Coalition have highlighted the Top 25 most endangered species every four years since 2003. In this third installment, more than 25 species are covered and the information presented was provided by the coalition rather than solely by one or two organizations. In general, this document includes all terrestrial and freshwater turtles and tortoises currently ranked as Extinct in the Wild or Critically Endangered on the current 2010 IUCN Red List, or provisionally so, based on recent draft assessments by the TFTSG (Turtle Taxonomy Working Group 2010) carried out in a series of turtle-focused IUCN Red Listing workshops held around the world. In addition, included on this list are a few species at lesser Red List categories that are also considered to be at a high risk of extinction.

This knowledge handbook, produced in the framework of the Regional Environmental Education Programme of PRCM, describes the coastal and marine environment of the countries involved in this programme (Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone). It is mainly directed to teachers so as to help them transmit to the youth the great value of their common heritage and the necessity to conserve it for future generations.

In 2007, IUCN, UNDP, UNEP and WEDO recognized the need for a coordinated strategy among global institutions working on gender and climate change. The result was the establishment of the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The primary goal of the GGCA is to ensure that climate change policies, decision making, and initiatives at the global, regional and national levels are gender-responsive. The GGCA has developed this training manual to increase the capacity of policy and decision makers so that efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change are gender-sensitive.

The aim of this study is to examine the gaps in our understanding of how tourism development affects natural World Heritage Sites in order to support the development of sustainable tourism these sites. Through an increased understanding of the risks and opportunities associated to tourism development and growth in World Heritage, this study hopes to encourage tourism development that while protecting the integrity of the site, also brings income generation opportunities for local communities associated with World Heritage Sites, offers financial and other support for the conservation of the sites, and contributes to visitors’ awareness about the values of nature.

This document reports on the results of a workshop on selective fishing and balanced harvest which took place in Nagoya in October 2010. The workshop examined the extent to which selective fishing as currently and traditionally practiced is able to contribute effectively to both ecosystem and fisheries sustainability. The workshop also discussed what a shift from the conventional paradigm of gear/fishery selectivity to that of a more “balanced harvest” would imply for the ecological and management dimensions of sustainability.

This volume gives the most up-to-date information on the distributions and conservation status of species in all inland water ecosystems across mainland continental Africa and the reasons behind their declining status. This represents the most comprehensive assessment yet of freshwater biodiversity at the species level for an entire continent. For managers, this information will assist in designing and delivering targeted action to mitigate and minimise these threats. From a policy perspective, this information is fundamental to meeting national obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ramsar Convention, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and will input to national-level conservation priority setting.

Use should be made of the sustainable potential of bioenergy which can be tapped all over the world, provided that risks to sustainability are excluded. In particular, the use of bioenergy must not endanger food security or the goals of nature conservation and climate change mitigation.
