This Guide provides a short description of each of the activities within the overall Information Management System, and uses of the system for adaptive management within the TCZCDP. The Guide is divided into two parts. The first part of the Guide provides an overview of the different elements within the overall Information Management System. The second part of the Guide provides details on how to use the database – including installing the system, entering data and analysing and generating reports.

This report was commissioned by IUCN’s Programme on Protected Areas and financed by the World Heritage Fund in response to a request from the World Heritage Committee (27th session, 2003). A literature review was carried out and consultation with regional experts and members of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) to identify a limited number of sites which may have potential for natural World Heritage status from among almost three hundred protected areas in Central Asia.

This workbook was produced in order to test and adapt the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) methodologies for use at marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Western Indian Ocean. The workbook is designed to allow for a dynamic process of MPA management based on the lessons learnt from pilot assessments in Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles. The method takes into account the management issues faced in the Western Indian Ocean, is cost effective, and encourages self-assessment by the managers. It is intended that the management effectiveness workbook serve as a practical tool in assisting MPA managers and practitioners in their role as custodians of marine biodiversity in the Western Indian Ocean.

Highlighting key linkages with other aspects of economic development, it should show how various stakeholders can interact and co-operate to support effective and sustainable management of protected areas, and help to establish priorities. Critical to the plan is the widest possible consultation with stakeholders and the development of objectives that can be agreed and adhered to by all who have an interest in the use and ongoing survival of the area concerned. These Guidelines, based on global best practice drawn from many areas around the world, represent a working framework for protected area planners to consider and adapt to their needs and circumstances.

The Red List of Endemic Trees and Shrubs of Ethiopia and Eritrea, published by the Global Trees Campaign in 2005, helps to improve the sparse knowledge of trees in the area. The conservation of tree species in Ethiopia and Eritrea is of particular importance as both countries have some of the highest levels of poverty in the world. This has led to large areas of forest being cleared for agriculture and for use as firewood. Civil conflicts and natural disasters in the area have added to the level of habitat destruction. The list concentrated on the endemic woody plants of the two countries, using IUCN Categories and Criteria to assess the conservation status of 135 endemic species (31 trees and 104 shrubs).

In some areas of western equatorial Africa, ape populations have declined by more than 50% over the last twenty years. By far the most serious short-term threats to apes in this region are poaching and disease epidemics. In the longer term, however, it is believed that habitat loss and disturbance will become as serious a threat as hunting and disease. The world’s leading experts agree that the investment and actions described in this plan constitute the best strategy for preserving wild chimpanzees and gorilla populations in western equatorial Africa. Implementation of the recommendations will make a significant difference to the survival of great apes in this region.
