The implementation of Natura 2000 in the New EU Member States of Central Europe is a long process which began with the signing of Accession Treaties in the beginning of the 1990s and will continue for several years. Environmental NGOs have been lobbying for proper designation and implementation of Natura 2000 sites with the involvement of civil society. This publication, prepared by several experts from nature protection organisations, gives a picture of this process. It is maybe too early to assess how successful the implementation of Natura 2000 in the New EU Member States of Central Europe has been, but it gives examples of good practice in the designation process and public consultations; it also illustrates where problems can appear and how to avoid them. The text is based upon questionnaires sent out to NGOs of eight new Central European Member States of the EU. Comments are often subjective and according to the individual authors of the questionnaires, which have been edited together to form a country-by-country panorama.

In some areas of western equatorial Africa, ape populations have declined by more than 50% over the last twenty years. By far the most serious short-term threats to apes in this region are poaching and disease epidemics. In the longer term, however, it is believed that habitat loss and disturbance will become as serious a threat as hunting and disease. The world’s leading experts agree that the investment and actions described in this plan constitute the best strategy for preserving wild chimpanzees and gorilla populations in western equatorial Africa. Implementation of the recommendations will make a significant difference to the survival of great apes in this region.

After accession to the EU, the key task of the governments of the „ten” is to reach a balance between co-operation to introduce sustainable, efficient and effective policies dealing with consumer protection, sustainable development and food safety at the EU level on one hand; and on the other hand, to provide services and activities on national, regional and local levels, responding to the diverse social, ecological and economic situations in each Member State.
