This collection of 52 papers and 21 abstracts focuses on sharing available knowledge to combat the threat of invasive alien species. Turning the target_ide of biological invasion by eradicating invasive species can yield substantial benefits for biodiversity conservation. As more eradications are attempted worldwide, it is increasingly important that lessons are learned from each and every one of these attempts, whether successful or unsuccessful. This publication is intended to share with a wider audience the insights and practical experience gained.

This report brings together 27 indicators of human and ecosystem wellbeing using IUCN's pioneering Sustainability Assessment method. It is intended to complement Wellbeing Scores software, which allows users to explore different standards and combinations of what comprises sustainable development. The publication may provoke debate amongst forest conservationists and critics and provide them with a platform for exploring this new software.

Protected Landscapes (IUCN Protected Area Category V) are lived-in working landscapes. In the past, there has been a tendency to see them as a rather Eurocentric approach to protected areas but increasingly the category is being designated in other parts of the world, including in a number of developing countries. The Guidelines include sections on the background and on the planning of such areas, and chapters on the principles, policies, process and the means for their management. The text includes more than 20 case studies from more than 15 countries in every region of the world.

The Loita/Purko Naimina Enkiyio forest is estimated to cover an area of 330 km2 in Kenya and serves several functions within the Loita Maasai community. When a change of the forest tenure to a reserve threatened this community, they challenged the decision and were successful in having the decision rescinded. Security of tenure can be considered the single most important factor in the sustainable management of natural resources. This publication compares three different tenure regimes and discusses how they might affect the local Maasai community.

There is growing recognition that centralized forest regimes, which exclude local knowledge and customary practices, have not achieved sustainable forest management. Most countries of Eastern and Southern Africa are reviewing and revising policies and laws and restructuring their agencies to accommodate emerging forest management imperatives. This study discusses the evolution of community involvement in forest management (CIFM) in Eastern and Southern Africa, and analyses the policies and laws being established by the countries of this region to both accommodate and promote this involvement.

This small booklet is the pilot version of a longer book which will be published for use in schools throughout the Kamchatka Peninsula. Using the example of the dwarf Siberian pine, one of three species of pines with edible nuts found in Russia, the book seeks input from readers on the content and design of the future publication on wild harvested plants and their uses. Considered a tool in the preservation of traditional knowledge of the indigenous peoples of Kamchatka and Koriakia, it strives to raise the awareness of, and interest in, wild plants and sustainable ways of life among the younger generation of Aboriginal peoples.

The most important agro-ecological problem confronting the steppe regions of Southern Russia is desertification, in large part due to pasture degradation. This publication provides an overview of the status of the various regions in Russia, and studies the connection between desertification and the state and history of agriculture and stockbreeding in each region. It relates the activities of the regional authorities and highlights the necessity of special mechanisms for solving the complex ecological-economic-social problems of the area.

27% of the world's coral reefs have been lost and 14% are predicted to be destroyed in the next 10 to 20 years. These are the predictions of the world's most authoritative document on the health of reef systems. Released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), a consortium of major reef monitoring groups in the world, in partnership with IUCN - The World Conservation Union and others, the new report reveals an erratic pattern of damage and recovery worldwide. Because of increased international commitment to address the causes of coral degradation, such as dynamite fishing and sedimentation, some reef systems around the world are slowly recovering. This new report maps recovery patterns the world over.
