There is growing international interest in the concept of circular economy as a framework for pursuing sustainable economic growth and human prosperity. A key aspect of circular economy is the concept of value-retention within economic production-consumption systems. Processes such as remanufacturing, refurbishment, repair and arranging direct reuse enable the retention of value, and in some cases the creation of new value for both the producer and customer, at a reduced environmental impact. The report also highlights the systematic barriers that many inhibit progressive scale-up including regulatory, market, technology and infrastructure barriers, and how they could be overcome.

Gender and environment statistics : unlocking information for action and measuring the SDGs
   

This report seeks to provide a framework to measure the nexus between gender and the environment. It proposes 18 gender-environment indicators for inclusion in the wider set of gender indicators, across the focal areas of right to land, natural resources and biodiversity; access to food, energy, water and sanitation; climate change, sustainable production and consumption, and health; and women in environmental decision making at all levels. The report also proposes specific ways that the links between gender and environment could be considered in the Sustainable Development Goals. 
Green bonds and integrated landscape management
   

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency and the Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned IUCN NL to research how innovative financial instruments such as green bonds can help scaling up Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) initiatives in the Netherlands. Green bonds are fixed-income instruments that enable capital-raising and investment for new and existing projects with environmental benefits. This report shows that accessing capital markets through green bonds to finance landscape initiatives in the Netherlands is possible, but conditions apply.

Opportunities for future research and innovation on food and nutrition security and agriculture
   

For the three-year IAP project 'food and nutrition security and agriculture', four parallel regional academy network working groups were constituted: in Africa (the Network of African Science Academies, NASAC), Asia (the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia, AASSA), the Americas (the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science, IANAS) and Europe (the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council, EASAC). The academies’ experts on food and nutrition security and agriculture from the four global regions decided on 10 guiding priority questions, the responses to which from each region formed the basis of the academies’ analysis. The four regional working groups developed their advice which were then subject to academy-nominated independent peer review and endorsed by each regional academy network. The feedback to the four regional reports was used as a resource to prepare this fifth, global report under the auspices of an expert editorial group. The global report was independently peer reviewed and endorsed by IAP.

This document illuminates the diverse values of experiences and connections with nature and their relationship to positive behaviours towards the Earth. In 2018, led by Dr. Cheryl Charles of the Children & Nature Network, 14 co-authors, and more than 60 reviewers from 22 nations on 5 continents, came together through the #NatureForAll network to collaboratively produce the publication Home to Us All: How Connecting with Nature Helps Us Care for Ourselves and the Earth. Much of the language and many of the same ideas and examples from that new and important publication have been incorporated into this summary document. Designed for a broad audience, this short summary aims to share highlights of the most current and compelling evidence for connecting people with nature to aid decision makers from diverse sectors across the world in implementing policies and practices that will help humans thrive in harmony with nature for decades to come.

Une bonne partie du contenu de cette nouvelle et importante publication de même qu’un grand nombre des mêmes idées et exemples ont été intégrés au présent document de synthèse. Destiné à un vaste public, ce sommaire vise à présenter les faits saillants des données les plus à jour et les plus probantes en faveur du rapprochement des gens avec la nature afin d’aider les décideurs de divers secteurs partout dans le monde à mettre en œuvre des politiques et des pratiques qui permettront aux êtres humains de s’épanouir en harmonie avec la nature au cours des décennies à venir.

Este volumen concentra la dinámica de los ecosistemas insulares a través de la lente de un importante taxón de mamíferos, los lagomorfos. Habla sobre la diversificación de los conejos y liebres en las islas de México, así como de las sinergias entre estos mamíferos de gran importancia ecológica y la flora y fauna de estas islas. Este acercamiento resulta oportuno dado que la extinción amenaza a muchos de estos conejos y liebres, y se requieren de esfuerzos para su conservación. 

This volume capitalizes on the dynamics of insular ecosystems, as seen through the lens of an important mammal taxon: the lagomorphs. The diversification of rabbits and hares on Mexican islands is introduced, in addition to the synergies between these ecologically important mammals and the flora and fauna of the islands. This study is timely, since many of the rabbits and hares are threatened with extinction and in need of conservation interventions.
Cranes and agriculture

Cranes have coexisted with agriculture for centuries in some regions and may often benefit from cropland or grazing. However, the rapid expansion and intensification of agriculture is leading to severe loss of wetland and grassland habitats important to cranes, thus increasing the conflicts between cranes and farmers. Agriculture has been one of the main drivers behind severe population declines for 11 of 15 species of cranes in the world, and affects all species in one way or another. This publication synthesizes our current knowledge and experience about the interface between cranes and agriculture across different regions of the world, shares examples of both challenges and successes, and identifies potential solutions and opportunities. This guide is intended to serve conservation practitioners, decision-makers, communities, and farmers who want to enlarge their understanding of the crane-agriculture interface, so that they can develop more effective and sustainable approaches that address their specific local or regional challenges. Readers can draw on the information and experiences described in the chapters and case studies to develop a conservation program that addresses the conflicts or opportunities relevant to their area and situation, whether at a local, regional, or flyway scale.

Quantifying linkages between coastal flooding, health, and mental well-being

Emerging evidence shows that the proximity to nature, including coastal environments, provides many benefits to human health and mental well-being. However, the environmental, social, and emotional impacts of climate change such as sea-level rise and increased flooding pose significant risks for coastal communities and may offset the benefits of living close to the coast. Many countries and regions of the world, including the United Kingdom in general, and Wales in particular, have a history of severe coastal flooding. This dissertation examined whether an individual's level of concern about flood risk impacted their health and mental well-being. Particular focus was given to the relationships between flood-risk concerns and awareness, human demographics, health, mental well-being, material deprivation, social-community cohesion, and coastal proximity.
