Issues of women’s participation and gender equality in the governance of shared waters have received insufficient attention to date in both the research and practice literature, yet action is happening on the ground. Women play key roles in generating change in the way water is used, shared, and allocated, from local to transnational levels and in spite of legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks that provide little space for their participation in planning and decisionmaking. This paper targets an audience of policy-makers, practitioners and researchers who are interested in taking action, policy and research further on these topics. It combines a survey of the literature with a collection of case examples describing how women in Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa are leading change on the ground in governing shared waters. Because the scientific and grey literature on the role of women in transboundary water governance is still scant, this exploratory document also draws on literature and data from the non-transboundary realm to explore the relevant gender-related dimensions of governing and sharing water, from a transboundary perspective.

The Restoration Opportunities Optimization Tool (ROOT) was developed out of a need to more efficiently and effectively communicate the importance of ecosystem services to decision makers. IUCN’s collective experience working to increase ecological productivity and improve human well-being through forest landscape restoration (FLR) demonstrated that although stakeholders were interested in generating ecosystem services from proposed restoration activities, the many services and their interactions with each other were often too complicated to communicate clearly. Furthermore, as a social process, decision makers working towards restoration were interested in more than just the biophysical gains from restoration for different services; they wanted evidence for how restoration might benefit agricultural production, access to jobs or different sources of income, and how investments in restoration might help underserved or marginalized groups. The case studies in this report were chosen based on ongoing FLR assessments as well as the existence of ecosystem services data, and are intended to demonstrate the applicability of ROOT to both technical and non-technical audiences.

   

Volume 8 of the Handbook of Mammals of the World (HMW) contains an unusual compilation of important but smaller orders that we now know have either distant or nearly no taxonomic relationships. They include armadillos, sloths and anteaters.

Increasing interest in measuring, modelling and valuing ecosystem services (ES), the benefits that ecosystems provide to people, has resulted in the development of an array of ES assessment tools in recent years. Selecting an appropriate tool for measuring and modelling ES can be challenging. This document provides guidance for practitioners on existing tools that can be applied to measure or model ES provided by important sites for biodiversity and nature conservation, including Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), natural World Heritage sites (WHS), and protected areas (PAs). Selecting an appropriate tool requires identifying the specific question being addressed, what sorts of results or outputs are required, and consideration of practical factors such as the level of expertise, time and data required for applying any given tool. This guide builds on existing reviews of ES assessment tools, but has an explicit focus on assessing ES for sites of importance for biodiversity and nature conservation. 

   

Les 'espèces envahissantes' (souvent appelées ravageurs, mauvaises herbes ou même maladies) sont des plantes, des animaux, des agents pathogènes et d’autres organismes qui sont délibérément ou involontairement emmenés au-delà de leur aire de répartition naturelle par des personnes et qui deviennent destructeurs de l’environnement ou des moyens de subsistance. Les îles sont particulièrement vulnérables aux espèces envahissantes car leur biodiversité indigène a évoluée de manière isolée sans grandes pressions des prédateurs et d’autres maladies et car elles ont une grande dépendance vis-à-vis des importations, des voyages et du tourisme. Ces Directives ont été conçues pour aider toute personne qui développe des programmes de gestion des espèces envahissantes sur les îles, dans le but de réduire les impacts négatifs de celles-ci sur le patrimoine naturel, les communautés locales et les moyens de subsistance de ces îles qui sont des écosystèmes à la fois riches et fragiles. Le document fournit de précieux conseils à tous ceux qui doivent trouver, planifier et prioriser des fonds, des ressources et des actions pour la gestion et la recherche sur les espèces envahissantes dans les îles, y compris pour la conception de stratégies et de plans d'action nationaux sur les espèces envahissantes. Ces Directives fournissent donc un cadre de références pour les individus et les agences insulaires qui travaillent sur les espèces envahissantes, ainsi que des conseils aux agences internationales et régionales pour fournir une assistance optimale à ces individus et agences qui sont actives sur le terrain. Un objectif majeur de ces Directives est d'aider et de guider le développement de stratégies, de plans et de programmes pour la gestion des espèces envahissantes plus objectifs, réalistes et atteignables.

   

‘Invasive species’ (often called pests, weeds and diseases) are plants, animals, disease agents and other organisms taken beyond their natural range by people, deliberately or unintentionally, and which become destructive to the environment or human livelihoods. Islands are particularly vulnerable to invasive species, owing to the evolution of their native animals and plants in isolation from predators and diseases, and the dependence of island peoples on imports, travel and tourism, which lead to high rates of arrival of new pests. These Guidelines are designed to assist anyone planning and programming the management of invasive species on islands, with the aim of reducing the negative impacts of invasives on islands’ rich and fragile natural heritage, communities and livelihoods. The document provides guidance for anyone who has to find, plan and prioritise funds and resources for invasive species management and research, on islands anywhere, including for the design of national invasive species strategies and action plans. It provides support for islanders and island agencies working on invasives, as well as guidance for international and regional agencies in providing assistance to them. A major aim is to help and guide the development of more objective, realistic and achievable invasive species plans and programmes.

The sea below 200 meters depth accounts for 95% of the volume of the ocean, making it the largest habitat for life on Earth. Though it is perpetually cold, generally dark, and subject to extreme pressures, the deep sea contains a wealth of unique and unusual species, habitats and ecosystems. It also contains a wealth of mineral resources, some of them in unique or highly enriched concentrations. Attempts to recover these resources during the 1970s and 1980s were impaired by legal uncertainties and technical constraints, along with metal prices that did not justify the enormous investments required. Today, the legal uncertainties have been largely resolved, marine mining and environmental monitoring technology has advanced rapidly. This report aims to stimulate interest in the deep ocean and the discussions surrounding its potential development, with a specific focus on deep-sea mining of hard metal-bearing minerals.

   

IUCN Bangladesh started a project with a view to minimize the human-elephant conflicts in and around the Kutupalong Camp. During 21 January - 13 February 2018, IUCN Bangladesh engaged a trained elephant survey team to find out the elephant presence and population size, recent human-elephant conflict situation, and possible intervention spots in and around the camp in Ukhia, Cox's Bazaar. The IUCN team surveyed approximately 70 square kilometers of bare hills around the camp. The survey revealed that elephant movement was frequent around the camp area, with the highest concentration all along the western boundary. A total of 56 spots for installing watch towers were identified.

   

L’analyse de situation se concentre principalement sur les palmiers à huile dans le contexte de la conservation de la biodiversité à partir de la littérature publiée avant le 31 janvier 2018, et vise à fournir une alternative constructive 
pour relever les défis de durabilité rencontrés par l’industrie de l’huile de palme. Ce rapport n’évalue pas les implications sociales et économiques de la production et de l’expansion des cultures de palmiers à huile, mais y fait référence lorsqu’elles sont susceptibles d’avoir un impact sur la conservation de la biodiversité. Grâce à l’identification des lacunes principales en matière de connaissances, l’analyse de situation fournira également des orientations au Groupe de travail sur l’huile de palme quant à ses priorités pour le reste de la période quadriennale 2017-2020.

   

The situation analysis primarily focuses on oil palm in the context of biodiversity conservation based on literature published before 31 January 2018, and aims to provide a constructive pathway to addressing sustainability challenges in the palm oil industry. This report does not assess the social and economic implications of palm oil production and expansion but will refer to these when they are likely to have an impact on biodiversity conservation.  Through identification of key knowledge gaps, the situation analysis will also provide direction to the Oil Palm Task Force in terms of seeking to address these knowledge gaps in the remainder of the 2017-2020 Quadrennium.

The protection and revival of degraded and deforested land is the need of the hour. In order to tackle the issues that arise as a consequence of degradation and deforestation, principles of forest landscape restoration are being globally promoted. The Bonn Challenge is a global effort to bring 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded land into restoration by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. The government of India made a Bonn Challenge pledge to bring under restoration 13 million hectares of degraded land by 2020 and an additional 8 million hectares by 2030. This report highlights the progress the country has made towards the pledge. Data was collected from government agencies, private companies and non-governmental organisations on their restoration efforts. Although not an exhaustive list, the data reveals patterns and provides a glimpse into the country’s different initiatives towards restoration. The case studies that the report presents have been hand picked and showcase some of the best practices on restoration from across the country.

A wide ranging, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary study, this is the first book that focuses on the challenges posed by climate change impacts on the all small island developing states, not just those in a specific region. As the global effects of climate change become increasingly evident and urgent, it is clear that the impact on small islands is going to be particularly severe. Small island developing states emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Yet many of their governments are allocating scarce financial and human resources in an effort to further reduce their emissions. This is a mistake. Rather than focus on mitigation (i.e., the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Climate Change Adaptation in Small Island Developing States concentrates on adaptation. The author assesses the immediate and future impacts of climate change on small islands, and identifies a range of proven, cost-effective adaptation strategies.

More than 1.5 billion smallholders throughout the world depend on forest landscapes to produce food, fuel, timber and non-wood forest products to meet their subsistence needs and generate cash income. Despite the large number of smallholders and the large collective scale of their production, policy makers have overlooked smallholders’ role as a powerful economic engine. New evidence presented in this report suggests that the value of smallholder production exceeds that of the world’s largest companies, making smallholder production collectively the world’s largest private sector. The findings of this report aim to alert land-use decision makers to the existing value of smallholder production; encourage greater efforts to secure, invest in, and add value to that production; promote devolution of control downwards to local levels where context-specific issues are most efficiently solved, and protect smallholder landscapes from incursions by agro-industrial models whose large unit value can exceed the collective value of multiple smallholder producers.

La biodiversidad y el carbono orgánico en los suelos determinan en gran medida el papel de la tierra en la producción de alimentos, el almacenamiento de agua, y la mitigación del cambio climático. Para restaurar o preservar la biodiversidad y el carbono orgánico de los suelos se necesita aumentar los insumos de materia orgánica o reducir las pérdidas de carbono, o ambas a la vez. Este informe resalta la forma en que el carbono orgánico y la biodiversidad de los suelos son los cimientos necesarios para los servicios de los ecosistemas terrestres. Son necesarias estrategias gubernamentales para orientar las inversiones en tierras áridas de los usuarios locales de la tierra, empresas privadas y otros actores interesados, para poder cumplir con su responsabilidad pública de proteger y promover la multifuncionalidad de la tierra.

La biodiversité des sols et le carbone déterminent en grande partie le rôle de la terre dans la production de nourriture, le stockage de l’eau et l’atténuation des changements climatiques. Ce rapport souligne comment le carbone organique des sols et la biodiversité des sols constituent la base des services écosystémiques terrestres. La restauration ou la préservation de la biodiversité des sols et du carbone organique des sols nécessite soit une augmentation des apports en matière organique, soit une réduction des pertes de carbone, ou les deux. Des stratégies gouvernementales sont nécessaires pour orienter les investissements des utilisateurs locaux, des entreprises privées et autres parties prenantes dans les zones arides, afinn d’assurer leur responsabilité publique de protection et de promotion de la multifonctionnalité des terres.

Soil biodiversity and soil organic carbon are vital to the way ecosystems function and they largely determine the role of land in producing food, storing water, and mitigating climate change. This report highlights how soil organic carbon and soil biodiversity provide the foundation for terrestrial ecosystem services. Restoring or preserving soil biodiversity and soil organic carbon requires increased inputs of organic matter or a reduction of carbon losses, or both. Government strategies are needed to guide investments in drylands by local land users, private companies and other stakeholders, in order to fulfil their public responsibility for protecting and promoting the multifunctionality of land.
