Las áreas protegidas son un componente clave de las estrategias mundiales de conservación. El turismo ofrece una forma única y fundamental para promover la conexión de los visitantes con los valores de las áreas protegidas, haciendo de esta una fuerza potencialmente positiva para la conservación. Los beneficios económicos del turismo en áreas protegidas —que dependen de hermosas áreas naturales, vida silvestre y naturaleza saludables y culturas auténticas— también pueden ser un argumento poderoso para la conservación. El turismo en áreas protegidas constituye una parte principal de la industria mundial del turismo; una industria cuya escala e impactos son enorme. La alta concurrencia de visitantes exige resolver algunas necesidades fundamentales de infraestructura y requisitos de empleo y servicios, todos los cuales tienen ramificaciones para la economía, la sociedad, la cultura y el medio ambiente. El presente documento ofrece orientaciones en temas claves para ayudar a los gestores a lograr el turismo sostenible en áreas protegidas.

   

Las ‘especies invasoras’ (a menudo llamadas plagas, malas hierbas o enfermedades) son plantas, animales, agentes patógenos y otros organismos que han sido transportados por los humanos más allá de los límites de su rango nativo de distribución (ya sea deliberada o involuntariamente) y que se vuelven destructivos para el medio ambiente y los medios de subsistencia humanos. Las islas y su área costera marina son particularmente vulnerables a las especies invasoras - debido a que a menudo constituyen ecosistemas únicos, con numerosas especies de plantas y animales endémicas (es decir, se encuentran únicamente en este lugar del mundo), las cuales no han evolucionado para enfrentarse a los depredadores, herbívoros, plagas de insectos, malas hierbas muy competitivas y enfermedades presentes en los continentes. Esta Guía tiene el propósito de ayudar a quienes trabajen en la planificación y la gestión de especies invasoras en islas, buscando reducir los impactos negativos de estas especies sobre el diverso y frágil patrimonio natural insular, sus comunidades y medios de subsistencia. El presente documento es el resultado de una extensa consulta global e incorpora contribuciones de expertos y gestores de especies invasoras en muchas islas por todo el mundo. Está diseñado para ser compatible con los convenios, normas e indicadores internacionales y regionales, para facilitar y coordinar su aplicación y para ayudar a que los programas y proyectos alcancen los estándares y las buenas prácticas aceptadas internacionalmente. Esta Guía refleja y es compatible con los convenios y estándares internacionales relevantes y está concebida para asistir tanto a planificadores como ejecutores a alcanzar los estándares aceptados y las buenas prácticas establecidas.

   

Illegal trade in wildlife has increased dramatically over the past decade; however, so have enforcement efforts aimed at mitigating this threat. Successful enforcement often involves the seizure and confiscation of wild species from diverse taxa of plants, animals and fungi. These confiscations may be parts of non-living specimens in the form of artefacts, food or medicinal products but, in many cases, they involve live individuals. With increasingly frequent confiscations and often high numbers of individuals involved, it is important that best practice management approaches are followed to maximise the conservation role and the individual welfare of these plants and animals. These Guidelines aim to provide guidance on this best practice.

   

Wherever a new sports venue is built, or the refurbishment of an existing venue is undertaken, it is likely that biodiversity will be affected by that development, although the significance of impacts on biodiversity – both negative and positive – will vary enormously from sport to sport and location to location. Sports organisations, public authorities and financial institutions as well as those involved in the actual construction and decommissioning of venues all have a role to play in managing the range of impacts that sport venues may have on biodiversity. This includes implementing different measures that can be taken to mitigate any negative impacts and adopting approaches that contribute to biodiversity conservation. Moreover, with careful planning and design, new sports venues and the expansion of existing sites or temporary facilities can, in some cases, even contribute to an overall gain of biodiversity. This report offers in-depth guidance on how to integrate biodiversity considerations in the development of a new venue or a temporary facility, including five checklists covering all aspects from the early planning stage and site selection to the decommissioning.

   

Le magot (Macaca sylvanus) est une espèce endémique de l’Afrique du Nord, dont l’aire de répartition couvre l’Algérie et le Maroc, et il est inscrit à l’Annexe I de la CITES. Actuellement, le magot est menacé au niveau mondial et a été classé comme espèce En Danger d’après la Liste rouge des espèces menacées de l’UICN™, principalement en raison d’une forte diminution de ses effectifs. Les principales menaces pesant sur l’espèce sont la perte et la dégradation de son habitat. Les populations de singes magots en Algérie subissent aussi plusieurs autres menaces, notamment la fragmentation de l’habitat, les conflits avec les riverains et le braconnage. Face à cette situation et pour contrer cette tendance, une stratégie et un plan d’action pour sa conservation au niveau de l’Algérie ont été développés. Cette stratégie aspire à voir d’ici 2050 des populations viables et connectées de singes magots, occupant leur aire de répartition historique en Algérie et vivant en harmonie avec les populations riveraines, lesquelles veilleront à la préservation de l’habitat naturel de cette espèce pour lui offrir toutes les conditions nécessaires à son épanouissement et à son maintien à l’état sauvage.

   

Analisis Situasi ini terutamanya fokus kepada kelapa sawit dalam konteks konservasi keanekaragaman hayati berdasarkan literatur yang diterbitkan sebelum 31 Januari 2018, dan bertujuan untuk menyediakan jalur konstruktif untuk mengatasi tantangan keberlanjutan di dalam industri minyak kelapa sawit. Laporan ini target_idak menilai implikasi sosial dan ekonomi dari adanya produksi dan perluasan lahan minyak kelapa sawit tetapi akan mengacu  kepadanya jika ada potensi berdampak terhadap konservasi keanekaragaman hayati. Melalui identifikasi kesenjangan pengetahuan yang utama, Analisis Situasi ini akan juga memberikan arah kepada Satuan Tugas Kelapa Sawit dalam rangka menjawab kesenjangan pengetahuan ini di sisa quadrennium 2017-2020.

In Indonesia, Kutai National Park is home to what is likely to be East Kalimantan’s largest population of the Critically Endangered eastern subspecies of the Bornean Orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus morio. It also hosts an astounding diversity of other species. Yet East Kalimantan faces many challenges in maintaining and protecting biodiversity from threats, including climate change. Forest restoration, also referred to as reforestation, presents a valuable opportunity to restore biodiversity and function to degraded areas that were once forested. Reforestation initiatives are being carried out in Kutai National Park, but there is a clear and pressing need to update Kutai National Park’s existing restoration practices to ensure forest integrity, provide opportunities for threatened species, and guide consideration of how to build climate change resilience. By doing so, the forests that orangutans need to survive into the future are more likely to persist. We examine restoration case studies, remind readers of restoration best practice, and present sets of tree species from a set of ~250 considered in the analysis that are likely to be suited to various restoration targets for Kutai National Park, e.g. with a focus on habitat restoration for orangutan; or a focus on conservation of rare and useful species. The intended audiences of this work include: orangutan researchers, government, mining companies, nurseries and other companies that are seeking guidance on habitat restoration for climate change resilience in East Kalimantan, as well as those wishing to support biodiversity conservation and/or restoration in the region.

The KBA Guidelines provide an overview of the steps for identifying and delineating KBAs, together with explanation of how the KBA criteria, thresholds and delineation procedures should be applied in practice. The Convention on Biological Diversity is an historic committment by the world's nations to conserve biological diversity, to use biological resources sustainably and to share equitably the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. It is the first global legal instrument to comprehensivly address all aspects of biological diversity. The guide illustrates the scientific, technical and legal issues which the Convention raises. Designed as a reference document, the guide's table of contents, pagination, index and commentary cross-references give the reader easy access to the book's comprehensive rendering of what could be involved in fulfilling the obligations of the Convention. There is also a detailed bibliography. The introduction provides a concise general overview of the Convention's character, its origin and history and major issues covered. The Convention's provisions are then explained article by article, 23 boxes include background information on such topics as the importance of biological diversity; national biodivesity strategies; biotechnology; environmental impact assessment; technology transfer; and intellectual property rights. It suggests options for implementing the Convention, in many instances drawing on existing environmental policy documents and action plans including the World Conservation Strategy, Caring for the earth, the Global Biodiversity Strategy and Agenda 21. Written in an objective, easily understandable and accessible style, the guide is indipensable reading for anyone desiring information on the Convention on biological diversity and possible steps for its implementation.

At first glance this is a lovely story about the friendship between children and young leopard cats who happen to be in the same situation, showing how children can understand animals and become their friends because they do not threaten them. But the story also raises major environmental issues. Through the account of the leopard cats, we are alerted to the way in which human exploitation of nature puts species in danger and leads to loss of biological diversity.

   

The objectives of this manual are: to help the managers and management authorities of cultural and natural World Heritage properties to reduce the risks to these properties from natural and humanmade disasters; to illustrate the main principles of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for heritage and a methodology to identify, assess and mitigate disaster risks; to explain how to prepare a DRM plan based on this methodology; to demonstrate that heritage can play a positive role in reducing risks from disasters; and to suggest how DRM plans for heritage properties can be integrated with national and regional disaster management strategies and plans.

   

The manual is based on the version of the "Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention" dated August 2011 and seeks to complement it. In particular, the manual seeks to support States Parties in implementing the World Heritage Convention and to provide guidance and knowledge that will help ensure a credible World Heritage List of well-managed properties of Outstanding Universal Value. it is hoped that the manual will help States Parties to carefully consider the implications of proceeding with World Heritage nominations and take the necessary steps to ensure that the effort is worthwhile for both the conservation of the property and the well-being of local communities and other local stakeholders.

   

The manual provides guidance for States Parties and all those involved in the care of World Heritage cultural properties on how to comply with the requirements of the Convention. It also aims to help States Parties to ensure that heritage has a dynamic role in society and harnesses, but also delivers to others, the mutual benefits that such a role can create. This Manual deals only with the management of cultural heritage sites. Natural World Heritage properties have many similar issues but they also have different problems.

This manual includes the biology of the crab (Scylla serrata, S. tranquebarica, and S. olivacea), and describes principles and procedures for spawning the mature crabs and rearing the zoea to "fly" size crabs. It focuses on the hatchery rearing of S. serrata as the farming of this species is more economically viable than the two other species. This manual builds upon the 2nd edition of Biology and hatchery of mud crabs Scylla spp. published in 2008.

Así como la naturaleza se deteriora bajo la presión combinada de pérdida y degradación de hábitats, contaminación y cambio climático, y a medida que las comunidades son desplazadas de sus tierras en gran parte por los mismos procesos que están destruyendo los ecosistemas, resulta cada vez más claro que la capacidad por excelencia para conservar la naturaleza y el bienestar de la gente es la capacidad de los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades locales para gobernar y gestionar sus territorios de vida.
