This publication explores emerging concepts, challenges, and key policy and law tools to help inform governments as they modernize public sector planning to better address 21st century change and advance their sustainable development goals. The focus is on strengthening spatial planning approaches to be more comprehensive, integrated, spatially and ecosystem oriented, and long-range. As part of such modernization, it becomes essential to incorporate biodiversity and climate change commitments as articulated and agreed by most countries particularly through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity with its Aichi Targets, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) new initiatives to build ecosystem resilience to climate change. This is an underlying premise of this publication.

The primary purpose of these guidelines is to assist those actively engaged in snake harvest and trade situations, who are faced with the need to implement monitoring and management. It is written for government wildlife managers, conservationists, professional scientists, and amateurs interested in ensuring the sustainable utilization of wildcaught snakes in commercial trade. This guidance for harvest monitoring may be particularly applicable in situations where implementing other monitoring strategies is not feasible. This publication is meant to be practical and offers a step-by-step guide to collecting data from wild-harvested snakes that is useful for the assessment of sustainability.

The report summarizes the methodology and main outcomes of a national Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) process to identify forest landscape restoration opportunities in Myanmar.

   

Management of transboundary waters in increasingly becoming more challenging, and climate change is likely to exacerbate these pressures. Not least because climate change is a global issue, adaptation will require an international response. This book aims to identify issues, both theoretical and practical, that States face in establishing cooperative transboundary mechanisms to effectively adapt water management to climate change. Furthermore, it will address complex legal hurdles that existing transboundary water institutions face when attempting to adapt existing mechanisms to function in a changing climate. It will also provide an overview of best practices in transboundary adaptive water governance thus far, in hopes that it can serve as a basis for contributing towards developing a better understanding of the linkages between water and climate change, and what can be done to help instutitions and societies to adapt.

Este estudio trata de un análisis económico de 11 acciones de restauración del paisaje en Honduras, que van desde la restauración de áreas agrícolas (pastos, granos básicos, cafetales) hasta las áreas forestales (bosque de pino y de mangle). Abarca 14 indicadores financieros, cuatro indicadores ambientales y dos indicadores sociales que sirven para comparar las técnicas de restauración mediante un análisis multicriterio. Con los hallazgos detallados en este informe, los(as) tomadores(as) de decisión procedieron con la priorización de las técnicas para la restauración en el marco del Programa Nacional de Recuperación de Bienes y Servicios de Ecosistema Degradados, teniendo en cuenta sus respectivos impactos financieros, sociales (medios de vida, creación de empleo) y ambientales (balance de GEI, erosión, exportación de sedimentos y producción de leña).

   

The papers in this volume were, with a few exceptions, presented at the third Island Invasives conference, held in Dundee, Scotland in July 2017.  The papers demonstrate up-scaling in several aspects of eradication operations – not least in ambition, land area, operational size, global reach and of course financial cost. In the space of a few decades, the size of islands treated for invasive species has increased by five orders of magnitude – from a few hectares to over 100,000 ha or 1,000 km2. Meanwhile, the diversity of species being tackled has increased, as has the range of countries now actively carrying out island restoration work. Inspired by pioneers from New Zealand and Australia, principally, today the movement has spread to islands in all oceans and off all continents. This expansion has been informed by, and has in turn produced, growing experience in all aspects of this field, from non-target impacts to ecological responses to factors affecting eradication success. A major aim of publishing these Proceedings is to inform people who are, or will in the future be, planning new projects to free islands of invasive species. Regardless of its location or the target species involved, each successive operation builds on the experience of those who have gone before, and the papers in this volume represent an invaluable wealth of such experience.
