Guidelines for undertaking rapid biodiversity assessments in terrestrial and marine environments in the Pacific

SPREP presents these guidelines for undertaking rapid biodiversity assessments in its Pacific island member countries and territories: Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. These assessments are referred to as BIORAPs. The guidelines are recommended to be used by SPREP members for the planning and implementation of terrestrial and marine BIORAP surveys, and subsequent monitoring of important sites.

Handbook of the mammals of the world : vol. 4 : sea mammals
   

Humankind has long felt a kinship of ocean-dwelling mammals, and human culture, customs, and literature abound with sea mammal lore. This volume covers 19 families in 3 orders. Sirenians (like manatees) are evolutionarily distant from both pinnipeds (meaning "fin-footed") and cetaceans, but ecological similarity argues for keeping these three groups together in one volume. The bulk of the volume is devoted to the cetaceans, by far the largest group of mammals inhabiting the oceans of the world full time.

L'année 2013 a insufflé un nouveau rythme, améliorant les attentes sur la capacité de l'UICN à obtenir des résultats dans une courte période de temps. L'Union a aidé certains pays à utiliser leurs dèfenses naturelles pour accroître leur résilience face aux catastrophes, elle a montré à de nombreuses entreprises comment valoriser le capital naturel, elle a mobilisé les gouvernements pour inverser le pic actuel du commerce illégal d'espèces sauvages, et elle a créé le premier Indice Environnement et genre au monde.

La Unión ayudó a las naciones a utilizar las defensas naturales para aumentar la resiliencia ante los desastres, mostró a las empresas cómo valorar el capital natural, movilizó a los gobiernos para frenar el reciente repunte en el comercio ilícito de vida silvestre, y produjo el primer índice de género y medio ambiente del mundo. Este informe anual documenta estos puntos y éxitos de la Unión en 2013.

With only about one-sixth of the original coral cover left, most Caribbean coral reefs may disappear in the next 20 years, primarily due to the loss of grazers in the region, according to this latest report, Status and Trends of Caribbean Coral Reefs: 1970-2012. This is the most detailed and comprehensive study of its kind published to date – the result of the work of 90 experts over the course of three years. It contains the analysis of more than 35,000 surveys conducted at 90 Caribbean locations since 1970, including studies of corals, seaweeds, grazing sea urchins and fish.

This report is the seventh iteration of the biennial listing of a consensus of the 25 primate species considered to be among the most endangered worldwide and the most in need of conservation measures. The list includes 5 species from Africa, 6 from Madagascar, 9 from Asia, and 5 from the Neotropics. This publication includes comprehensive information about the threats facing these primates, with bibliographic references cited in the text. The species profiles from the 2008-2010 edition have been updated for those species remaining on the list, and additional profiles for newly listed species have been added.

The year 2013 set a pace and raised the bar on what IUCN can achieve in a short time. The Union helped nations use natural defences to boost resilience against disasters, showed companies how to value natural capital, mobilized governments to curb the recent spike in illegal wildlife trade, and produced the world's first gender and environment index. As the global voice of nature and sustainability, IUCN helped craft the Sustainable Development Goals and continued to maintain strong links with multilateral environmental agreements and their Secretariats. We were delighted to welcome a new Framework Partner, the Republic of Korea, and we also stabilized the financial situation. This annual report documents the highlights and the achievements of the Union in 2013.
Transboundary water governance : adaptation to climate change
   

Management of transboundary waters in increasingly becoming more challenging, and climate change is likely to exacerbate these pressures. Not least because climate change is a global issue, adaptation will require an international response. This book aims to identify issues, both theoretical and practical, that States face in establishing cooperative transboundary mechanisms to effectively adapt water management to climate change. Furthermore, it will address complex legal hurdles that existing transboundary water institutions face when attempting to adapt existing mechanisms to function in a changing climate. It will also provide an overview of best practices in transboundary adaptive water governance thus far, in hopes that it can serve as a basis for contributing towards developing a better understanding of the linkages between water and climate change, and what can be done to help instutitions and societies to adapt. 
Ocean acidification : international policy and governance options

As the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere rises, an increasing amount of the gas is absorbed by the ocean, making it more acidic. Both the academic challenge as well as the practical urgency to find solutions to ocean acidification within the broader field of environmental law and governance have spurred some initial analysis on this topic. This paper contributes to the growing literature and discussion concerned with the performance and transformational need of ocean governance and policies, and the need to fully incorporate ocean acidification into other pertinent environmental, social and economic deliberations toward a sustainable, low-carbon society.

The Cameroon-Nigeria border region where the Cross River gorilla occurs is a biodiversity hotspot of global significance. The Cross River gorilla can therefore play a role as a 'flagship' species; the actions proposed in this plan ensure the survival of both this Critically Endangered ape and the region's immense biological wealth. This document represents the consensus of experts who met at a workshop in February 2012, in Limbe, South West Region, Cameroon.

El comercio de productos de madera en la región de Centroamérica y la República Dominicana presenta en la actualidad grandes retos en cuanto a su sistema de reporte y verificación de estadísticas. Mediante el trabajo de un grupo regional de consultores y colaboradores nacionales, se hizo un análisis estadístico regional sobre el comercio de madera entre los países de América Central y la República Dominicana (región AC-RD), y entre la región y los principales mercados externos, así como se actualizaron los procedimientos de exportación e importación de productos de madera.
