Governance of shared waters : practical exercises

This book presents four exercises that describe a series of conflict scenarios that are completely fictitious but fully possible "realities" in order for them to be analyzed in the context of dialogue and cooperation among the different imaginary actors. The hope is that this new book, which is designed for use in workshops and other capacity-building activities as well as in academic environments, will help to continue capacity building for the effective management of transboundary water basins.

In vivo conservation of animal genetic resources
   

Conservation of animal genetic resources -- ensuring that these valuable resources remain available for future use by livestock breeders -- is one of the four strategic priority areas of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which was adopted in 2007 and is the first internationally agreed framework for the management of biodiversity in the livestock sector. These guidelines focus on conservation "in vivo", i.e. maintaining live populations rather than storing frozen genetic material. They have been endorsed by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. These guidelines address both "in situ" conservation (supporting the continued use of threatened breeds in the livestock production systems where they have traditionally been raised) and "ex situ" conservation (maintainance of populations at sites such as conservation farms and zoos). As well as providing a wealth of information on breeding strategies for small at-risk populations, the guidelines provide advice on how to develop an effective and well-targeted national conservation strategy.

Existen oportunidades de inversión en proyectos de MIPyMEs (micro, pequeña y mediana empresa) forestales con potencial de generar utilidades financieras, así como de cumplir metas sociales y ambientales.

Sin embargo, aún existen áreas de excepcionales valores en biodiversidad que todavía no son parte de esta red de ‘sitios de Patrimonio Mundial por su biodiversidad’. Para abordar este tema, la UICN y el PNUMA-WCMC han creado este estudio temático global, con un enfoque en el ámbito terrestre. El estudio actualiza varios análisis anteriores e identifica vacíos en la red de sitios de Patrimonio Mundial por su biodiversidad, además de sitios potenciales de excepcional biodiversidad que podrían ser meritorios de su inclusión en el listado de Patrimonio Mundial. Actualmente se está realizando un estudio complementario para el ámbito marino. This study identifies the relationships that exist between World Heritage cultural landscapes and protected areas, and documents the practical management and governance associations that occur between them. It looks at i) the conceptual similarities and differences between these two systems of conservation designations; ii) the spatial overlap between them; and iii) the practical interrelation and integration that occurs ‘on the ground’. The Hungarian Hortobágy National Park and Thingvellir National Park in Iceland are used as examples.
