A brioflora de Portugal Continental integra um total de 704 taxa (incluindo espécies, subespécies e algumas variedades consideradas taxonomicamente importantes). Compreende cerca de 40% das espécies europeias e quase 65% de todos os briófitos ibéricos sendo estes organismos indicados como um dos grupos de plantas mais antigo, com grande importância ecológica, fundamentais para a manutenção da biodiversidade dos ecossistemas. São também importantes bioindicadores da qualidade ambiental. A presente publicação foi desenvolvida com suporte no conhecimento da brioflora do país desde as primeiras colheitas no século XIX até aos estudos mais recentes, adoptando critérios e categorias de ameaça propostas pela UICN (IUCN). Para diversas espécies consideradas relevantes é apresentada uma descrição sumária, os dados de ocorrência, a ecologia e distribuição geral, o estado de conservação e sensibilidade no país, um mapa de distribuição, imagens da espécie ou habitat, anotações e bibliografia. Este livro contempla ainda a Lista Vermelha actualizada, onde para todas as espécies conhecidas no país é indicado o seu estatuto de conservação. Neste Livro são também identificadas áreas prioritárias e propostas medidas específicas para a preservação das espécies, além de informação relativa às comunidades de briófitos com elevado estatuto na Rede Nacional de Áreas Protegidas.

The studies in this book move from the dream of ecotourism-fuelled development supporting nature conservation and people towards the local realities facing marginalized people, living adjacent to protected areas in environments often poorly situated to agriculture.

Natural world heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean : options to promote an underutilized conservation instrument

The Environment and Gender Index (EGI) 2013 pilot
   

For the past two decades, governments have established new international mandates ensuring that gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to environmental decision-making and sustainable development. However, the lack of a mechanism to monitor and measure government progress has contributed to little or no implementation of these mandates. The EGI provides the first quantitative data on governments’ performance translating the gender and environment mandates in the three Rio Conventions and CEDAW into national policy and planning. The resulting information will help policymakers, civil society, and others evaluate progress and identify where the gaps lie in achieving gender equality in the environmental context.

Identifying potential overlap between extractive industries (mining, oil and gas) and natural World Heritage sites
   

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 217 properties recognized for their outstanding natural heritage values. Despite UNESCO estimating that up to a quarter of these World Heritage sites are under development pressure from existing and future activities of extractive industries, to date there is no reliable analysis of the extent of overlap on a global scale. To address this absence of evidence, UNEP-WCMC, together with IUCN (the Advisory Body to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on natural heritage), the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) (whose members have made a ‘no-go’ commitment for natural World Heritage sites), and WWF, conducted the first global analysis of extractive activities and World Heritage sites based on data from two industry datasets.
Green growth and water allocation
   

As an active member of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO and the Netherlands National Committee IHP-HWRP organized the workshop ‘Water allocation and green growth’ in cooperation with the Government of the Netherlands. The workshop held in Wageningen in November 2012 served to provide input to the work of the OECD for the coming two years in analysing policy instruments and accompanying measures to facilitate water allocation mechanisms. This publication summarizes the discussions. It is part of a wider series of publications based on several international meetings held in the Netherlands addressing key water issues and challenges. This series reflects the rich expertise of participants from various geographical and disciplinary backgrounds, and thus the true spirit of water cooperation. The hope is that this publication will raise awareness of these sensitive and urgent questions to ensure that ecological principles, including hydrology, are at the heart of economic development and decision-making.
Field guide to reef fishes of Sri Lanka

This publication will be immensely useful for those interested in learning about reef fishes and may also help officials in the identification of the species of reef fishes protected by law. This is the first in a series of field guides describing 158 species of reef fishes in Sri Lankan coastal waters.

Nature's spectacle : the world's first national parks and protected places

National parks have always been an emotive and iconic symbol, ever since the first parks of the modern era were created in the mid-nineteenth century. This book, based on original research, delves deeply into their character and significance, and the larger context in which they developed. The book celebrates the deserved attractiveness of the parks as wilderness or 'spectacle' to millions of visitors, but also emphasises how there was nothing inevitable, self-sustaining or without cost in their magnificence and accessibility. Those early parks were a powerful unifying force as national 'playgrounds', especially as motor transport democratised their use. However they also provoked bitter conflict in their dispossession of local communities and perhaps deliberate segregation of people from scenery and wildlife. That first century of national parks, which concluded with the significant break of the Second World War and the subsequent development of more international approaches to conservation, left an uncertain legacy. It was a fragile foundation from which to build what became an integral part of today's conservation movement.
Pilot national program (PNP) for tiger conservation in Bangladesh
   

Tiger populations worldwide are in tremendous pressure of extinction. Bangladesh, harboring one of the largest remaining populations of wild tigers in the vast areas of Sundarban mangrove forest, has therefore a great responsibility to protect this beautiful creature. This Pilot National Program for Tiger Conservation in Bangladesh was developed to define specific goals, strategies and action steps for the next 3-5 years that support achieving the objectives set forth in the Bangladesh National Tiger Recovery Program, formulated out of the International Tiger Forum held in November 2010.

Las áreas naturales protegidas en Francia : una diversidad de herramientas para conservar la biodiversidad
   

Las áreas protegidas constituyen un elemento fundamental de las estrategias de conservación de la biodiversidad, la geodiversidad y el paisaje. En Francia, las áreas protegidas ocupan en la actualidad cerca del 20% del área terrestre y movilizan a numerosos actores institucionales. La presente publicación pretende dar a conocer el sistema francés de áreas protegidas. Esperamos que les ayude a entender mejor la importante contribución de estos instrumentos a la protección del patrimonio natural, a la gestión territorial y, en un sentarget_ido más amplio, al desarrollo sostenible. 

 
Protected areas in France : a diversity of tools for the conservation of biodiversity
   

Protected areas are an essential part of biodiversity, geodiversity and landscape conservation strategies. In France, protected areas cover nearly 20% of land area and involve numerous stakeholders. This publication describes the French system of protected areas. We hope it will help the reader better understand the essential contribution of these mechanisms to the protection of France's natural heritage, land management and, more broadly, sustainable development.
