The significance and management of natural carbon stores in the open ocean

This report sets out the importance of carbon in the open ocean and, through examples, illustrates the significance and values of some of its major carbon pools and sinks. It has been produced to promote better understanding of how atmospheric carbon is captured, stored and mobilized in the ocean, and how this has a significant bearing on sustainability, the welfare of people, and the future scale and intensity of climate change and ocean acidification.

More people, more trees : environmental recovery in Africa = plus de gens, plus d'arbres : le rétablissement de l'environnement en Afrique

Over 20 years ago, concerned farmers’ groups in Kenya and Burkina Faso began to adopt new measures to conserve soil and water and to re-establish trees in their fields. Two videos, "Looking after our Land" and "Building on Traditions", recorded the new participatory approaches for land conservation being developed at that time in various countries. More People, More Trees returns to the same communities, and some of the same people, in Kenya and Burkina Faso to document developments since the original filming.

Natural resource governance, empowerment and poverty reduction : learning from practice

This document is divided into three sections. The first examines learning on various aspects of natural resources governance. This is followed by a section focusing more specifically on project implementation, planning and management lessons. Finally, we conclude with some suggestions on possible future niches for IUCN in the natural resources (NR) governance arena. We expect this document can contribute to strengthening the natural resource governance work of IUCN and partners and provide valuable learning for DFID, GTF grantees and other institutions involved in governance.
