As the World Heritage Convention celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022, over 1100 sites around the world are recognized as World Heritage - places  that are so valuable to humanity that there conservation has been deemed our collective responsibility. Yet many of these exceptional places face  increasing pressure from diverse types of development projects within and around the sites. Assessing the impacts of such projects is essential to both prevent damage to World Heritage and identify sustainable options. This Guidance and toolkit explains the process for achieving these goals. Offering practical tips and tools including checklists and a glossary, it provides a framework for conducting impact assessments for cultural and natural heritage sites.

Basándose en ejemplos de los sectores de tecnología y de empresas emergentes (startups), la UICN desarrolló la idea de una incubadora para identificar y alimentar las ideas de los administradores de áreas protegidas y de otros agentes que carecen de conocimientos, recursos o contactos profesionales para hacerlas realidad: la Incubadora para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (INC, por sus siglas en inglés). El objetivo del presente documento es reunir las lecciones, ejemplos y recursos clave generados a través del trabajo de INC para guiar futuros proyectos de financiamiento de la conservación y ayudar a cerrar la brecha entre conservación e inversión.

Montenegro is a disaster-prone country particularly vulnerable to climate change, thus affecting multiple sectors – agriculture, biodiversity, energy, forestry, public health, coastal areas and maritime resources, tourism and water resources. The combination of the rise in frequency and intensity of climate-related hazards, and increasing development in the country raises the risks of these hazards causing substantial economic and health impacts. This uncertain and changing situation is hindering the fulfilment of Montenegro’s environmental, economic and developmental targets. The overall purpose of this scoping study is to provide the state-of-the art of the Montenegrin national context with regards to the application of Nature-based Solutions approaches for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

Kosovo is prone to a wide variety of natural hazards – including floods, landslides, droughts, earthquakes, and wildfires – that could pose serious damages to the economy, fiscal balances, and the well-being of vulnerable populations. Many of these climatic-related hazards are expected to magnify with future climate change. These climate and disaster risks can seriously affect productive sectors of the economy, particularly agriculture, infrastructure, energy, water resources, and communities and households. The overall purpose of this scoping study is to provide the state-of-the art of the Kosovo national context with regards to the application of Nature-based Solutions approaches for climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction.

This publication provides initial guidance to countries on key enabling tools for attracting public and private sector investments in conservation and how to navigate the process. It builds on a series of recent ELC protected areas and biodiversity projects, prompted by emerging investor interest in the sustainability of their investments and responding to the growing funding gap between what is needed and what is available in traditional financial sources (grants, philanthropy, national budgets and loans) to effectively address the planet’s growing environmental crises - accelerating biodiversity loss, climate impacts affecting the Earth and society, and expanding land, marine and ecosystem degradation.

Otras medidas eficaces de conservación basadas en áreas (OMEC) son sitios situados fuera de las áreas protegidas que ofrecen una conservación in situ eficaz y a largo plazo de la biodiversidad. La conservación puede ser el objetivo principal del sitio, un objetivo secundario de un sitio que se gestiona con otros fines, o puede ser una consecuencia imprevista de la forma en que se gestiona el sitio. Las OMEC pueden estar gobernadas y gestionadas por gobiernos, entarget_idades privadas o Pueblos Indígenas y comunidades locales, o por una combinación de todos ellos. Esta herramienta guía a los evaluadores a través de tres pasos para aplicar ocho criterios que determinan si un sitio reúne las condiciones para ser considerado una OMEC en virtud de lo establecido en el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica. En el caso de los sitios que actualmente no cumplen todos los criterios, la herramienta ayuda a poner de relieve en qué ámbitos se requiere más información o mejoras en materia de gobernanza y gestión.

Outras medidas eficazes de conservação baseadas em áreas (OECMs) são locais fora de áreas protegidas que proporcionam conservação in situ eficaz e de longo prazo da biodiversidade. A conservação pode ser o objetivo principal ou secundário de um local que é gerido para outros fins, ou pode ser uma consequência acidental da forma como o local é gerido. As OECMs podem ser controladas e geridas por governos, entarget_idades privadas, Povos Indígenas e comunidades locais ou uma combinação desses. Esta ferramenta orienta um avaliador ao longo das três etapas de aplicação dos oito critérios que determinam se um local se qualifica como OECM conforme estabelecido na Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica. Para locais que atualmente não cumprem todos os critérios, a ferramenta serve para destacar as áreas que necessitam de mais informações ou melhorias na governança e gestão.

Tindakan konservasi berbasis area yang efektif lainnya (OECM) adalah tapak di luar kawasan perlindungan yang memberikan pelestarian keanekaragaman hayati secara in situ yang efektif dan jangka panjang. Konservasi keanekaragaman hayati mungkin merupakan tujuan utama suatu tapak, target sekunder suatu tapak yang dikelola untuk tujuan lain, atau mungkin merupakan konsekuensi yang target_idak disengaja dari cara tapak tersebut dikelola. OECM dapat diatur dan dikelola oleh pemerintah, entitas swasta, masyarakat adat, dan komunitas lokal, atau kombinasi diantaranya. Alat bantu ini memandu penilai menjalani tiga langkah untuk menerapkan delapan kriteria yang menentukan apakah suatu tapak memenuhi syarat sebagai OECM sebagaimana diatur dalam Konvensi Keanekaragaman Hayati. Les autres mesures de conservation efficaces par zone (AMCEZ) concernent les sites situés en dehors des aires protégées qui assurent une conservation in situ efficace et à long terme de la biodiversité. La conservation peut être l’objectif principal du site, un objectif secondaire d’un site géré à d’autres fins, ou encore une conséquence involontaire de la manière dont le site est géré. Les AMCEZ peuvent être gouvernées et gérées par des gouvernements, des entités privées ou des peuples autochtones et des communautés locales, ou une combinaison de ceux-ci. Cet outil guide un évaluateur à travers trois étapes pour appliquer huit critères qui déterminent si un site est admissible en tant qu’AMCEZ tel que défini dans la Convention sur la diversité biologique. Pour les sites qui ne répondent pas actuellement à tous les critères, l’outil sert à mettre en évidence les domaines dans lesquels des informations supplémentaires ou des améliorations en matière de gouvernance et de gestion sont nécessaires.

   

Se ha elaborado una clasificación unificada de los taxones exóticos basada en la magnitud de su impacto ambiental (de aquí en adelante, la Clasificación del impacto ambiental de taxones exóticos, abreviada como EICAT por sus siglas en inglés) en respuesta a estas cuestiones. Se trata de un método sencillo, objetivo y transparente para clasificar taxones exóticos en cuanto a la magnitud de su impacto ambiental perjudicial en las zonas receptoras. Los taxones exóticos se clasifican en una de cinco categorías de impacto según los datos existentes sobre el impacto que han ocasionado en taxones autóctonos en su área de introducción. Cada una de estas cinco categorías de impacto representa una magnitud de impacto diferente, según el nivel de organización biológica (individuo, población o comunidad) sobre la que ejercen un impacto y la reversibilidad de dicho impacto.

   

À medida que os conflitos entre humanos e animais selvagens se tornam mais frequentes, sérios e distribuídos em todo o mundo, eles são notoriamente difíceis de resolver, e muitos esforços para lidar com esses conflitos enfrentam dificuldades para fazer progressos. Estas Diretrizes fornecem um guia essencial para entender e resolver conflitos entre humanos e animais selvagens. As Diretrizes têm como objetivo fornecer fundamentos e princípios para boas práticas, com orientações claras e práticas sobre a melhor forma de lidar com conflitos e permitir a coexistência com animais selvagens. Elas foram desenvolvidas para serem usadas por profissionais de conservação, líderes comunitários, tomadores de decisão, pesquisadores, funcionários do governo e outros. Com foco em abordagens e ferramentas para análise e tomada de decisões, elas não se limitam a nenhuma espécie ou região específica do mundo.

   

This report gives an overview of the status of Mediterranean cetaceans (whales and dolphins), informed by IUCN Red List assessments undertaken between 2018 and  2022. Compared to the first review by IUCN, published in 2012, these recent assessments provide better information on the status of resident Mediterranean  subpopulations, thanks to improved regional monitoring. A total of 24 cetacean species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, of which 10 are considered to be resident. This second regional IUCN Red List assessment on the cetacean species in the Mediterranean Sea shows a clearer image of the cetacean subpopulations  residing in the Mediterranean, but also highlights the need for more efforts to halt the decline of cetacean subpopulations resident in the Mediterranean Sea.

   

Efforts to assess the effectiveness of environmental law through legal indicators are indispensable at a time when environmental law and its effective implementation and enforcement are crucial in the global  transformation towards a sustainable society. Environmental law requires tools which allow governments and society in general to accurately measure and inform about the extent to which the law is being correctly and effectively applied. Environmental legal indicators, with their corresponding methodological compliance steps, provide this needed accuracy to measure the effectiveness of the law. This publication draws together legal ideas presented at the 2nd World Environmental Law Congress European (December 2021) and showcases ongoing work on environmental legal indicators carried out by WCEL and its partners. 

   

Indigenous and Local communities are keepers of valuable environmental knowledge accumulated over generations. This knowledge is held individually and collectively, often orally transmitted and embodied. At least 25% of the world’s land area is owned, managed, used or inhabited by these groups, and such areas are degrading less quickly than others. Yet, despite abundant empirical evidence, Indigenous and Local communities struggle to have their voices meaningfully included in environmental governance. Much more work remains to be done on the integration of Indigenous and local knowledge within nature conservation. What can communities teach us? responds to this gap and the growing calls for decolonising the conservation movement.

   

The Abu Dhabi Red List of Ecosystems contributes to meeting important targets of the new EAD strategy (2021-2025) by describing the health status and the loss of critical habitats from Abu Dhabi. The outcomes of this Red List of Ecosystems (RLE), together with the Red List of Threatened Species from Abu Dhabi, will provide valuable inputs to help prioritize management plans and public policies to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates in the UAE.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are activities undertaken to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems to simultaneously benefit people and nature. NbS are critical to addressing challenges like climate change, food security, water security, disaster risk, human health, and social and economic development. This publication outlines the available pathways to include NbS in corporate climate strategies consistent with the NbS definition, principles and Global Standard for NbS™. When correctly implemented, NbS can contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation while offering important benefits for biodiversity and human well-being.

The objective of this study is to develop a vision for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Aoos River Basin, including improving the effectiveness of management and coordination of local protected areas, and develop a roadmap for the final designation of a protected area in accordance with IUCN standards for protected area classification. Key components of the study include analyses of threats to identified environmental values in the Aoos River Basin and supporting activities for expansion or establishment of a protected area in currently unprotected portions of the Aoos River Basin.

Biodiversity is context-specific, and there are no one-size-fits-all indicators or monitoring methodologies. Nevertheless, the lack of common metrics to measure and monitor biodiversity at different levels in agriculture poses a barrier to mobilizing actors, setting ambitious targets and assessing policy impact. This publication seeks to overcome that barrier through a flexible framework that uses existing tools to assess functional and habitat diversity by measuring diversity at various scales, including belowground, aboveground, habitat-level and national impact (impact on land-use change or downstream pollution).

The first part of the book provides an overview of plastics types, how they are released to the environment, and how they interact with organisms. This part also provides a background for several salient aspects of microplastics hazards (e.g., attachment of toxic chemicals, toxicity to organisms). Special attention will be paid to how microplastics decompose in the environment (which is significant in terms of mobility of toxicity). Subsequent chapters address how to sample and identify microplastics. The second part of the book examines technologies for removal of microplastics from water, wastewater, and soil. Biological, chemical, and physical technologies are presented--technologies that can destroy minute plastics or convert them into benign products. Theory of operation, practical considerations, and possible environmental impacts of their use are discussed.
