This proceeding is a compilation of the 10-year achievements in IMTA research conducted by JIRCAS and SEAFDEC/AQD researchers and their collaborators, covering topics such as ecological characterization of target species, evaluation of environmental impacts, and socio-economic analysis.

   

This work is intended to be the strategic basis for moor protection in Austria in the future. The strategy contributes to the preservation and restoration of the moors, strengthens implementation in the federal states and intensifies cooperation and dialogue between the various interest groups. The aim is also to raise awareness of the role of moors and peat soils in water, climate and nature conservation.

   

The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions lists the Criteria and Indicators, as adopted by the 98th Meeting of the IUCN Council in 2020.

   

This Guidance for using the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions accompanies the Global Standard to provide the scientific basis and guidance for users.

Mountains are at the frontline of climate change, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and socio-economic inequities for both mountain communities and those downstream. However, mountain communities have the capacity to adapt to these changes and mitigate the impacts of climate change. By utilizing the opportunities created by ecosystem services, mountain communities can build climate-resilience, resource security and consistent livelihoods. This publication presents and highlights the experiences using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to build climate resilience in three mountain ranges: the Andes in South America, the Himalayas in Asia, and Mt. Elgon in East Africa. Its main objective is to provide practical information on these experiences to inform NbS practitioners, decision-makers, project designers and managers, researchers and local communities.

As florestas do Patrimônio Mundial são alguns dos habitats mais ricos em biodiversidade da Terra e desempenham um papel fundamental na regulação do clima ao absorver dióxido de carbono (CO2) da atmosfera. No entanto, essas florestas estão sob crescentes pressões antrópicas, incluindo a mudança climática. Ao combinar dados de sensoriamento remoto com monitoramento em âmbito local, este relatório quantificou, pela primeira vez, os benefícios climáticos das florestas do Patrimônio Mundial e avaliou os impactos de ameaças comuns às florestas do Patrimônio Mundial e aos sítios que foram identificados como fontes líquidas de carbono. Portanto, fornece informações para facilitar o diálogo entre os formuladores de políticas e as partes interessadas locais para o desenvolvimento de soluções eficazes destinadas a manter o papel contínuo das florestas do Patrimônio Mundial como sumidouros e estoques estáveis de carbono para as gerações futuras.

Les forêts du patrimoine mondial comptent parmi les habitats dont la biodiversité est la plus riche sur Terre. Elles jouent un rôle crucial dans la régulation du climat en absorbant le dioxyde de carbone (CO2) de l’atmosphère. Cependant, ces forêts sont soumises à des pressions croissantes liées aux activités humaines, notamment le changement climatique. En associant des cartes mondiales de flux de carbone forestier et le suivi à l’échelle des sites, ce rapport a quantifié pour la première fois les bienfaits climatiques des forêts du patrimoine mondial, évalué les impacts sur les émissions de gaz à effet de serre des principales menaces pesant sur les forêts du patrimoine mondial et identifié les sites qui sont des sources nettes de carbone. Il fournit donc des informations essentielles pour faciliter le dialogue entre les décideurs politiques et les parties prenantes locales en vue de mettre au point des solutions efficaces pour maintenir le rôle continu des forêts du patrimoine mondial en tant que puits et réserves de carbone stables pour les générations futures.

   

NbS are increasingly seen as a way to meet the objectives of several global agreements and can be central to a just transition – if the right mix of just transition policies are implemented. But there is currently no guarantee that NbS will generate decent work. Co-developed by ILO, UNEP and IUCN, this report is the first in a joint global biennial report series that aims to fill knowledge and advocacy gaps on how transitions to a green economy will affect the world of work, and of the role that NbS can and do play in creating employment, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable people.

   

The wide-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have included immense loss of life and serious health and economic consequences across communities and  ecosystems. Tourism, which itself suffered a sharp disruption in the pandemic, is among the industries that have a strong interest to reduce risks and increase resilience toward a more sustainable model in line with a One Health approach. Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are an especially important setting for sustainable tourism and can serve as a catalyst for wider adoption of best practices anchored in One Health principles that help to sustainability balance the health of people, animals, and  ecosystems. This report presents six core principles, which provide practical strategies for tour operators and wider tourism industry stakeholders in PCAs. They are intentionally broad, allowing for use and adaptation in any PCA context.

   

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are affected by disease risks and impacts in wide-ranging ways, as demonstrated by recent epidemics and the global COVID-19  pandemic. Their potential role in disease prevention, detection, response, and recovery is significant, both to reduce spillover risks and to effectively prepare for disease events. This report provides an orientation for PCA managers on relevant sources of risk, with actions that can be taken to build up systems to manage disease threats across the variety of PCA contexts. A key message is that protected areas can – and should – play a vital role in One Health approaches to reduce disease risk and improve human, animal, and environmental health outcomes.

This report presents the results of applying the Restoration Barometer in Mexico, considering the particularities of the national context, data availability and the methodological guidelines provided by the Barometer guide for governments. This publication aims to make known the actions and impacts associated with the advances of the United Mexican States towards the restoration commitments acquired within the framework of the Bonn Challenge. Likewise, it generates useful information to continue and optimize investment and restoration planning processes in the country as part of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
