The IUCN Urban Alliance, a broad coalition of IUCN constituents concerned with the urban dimensions of nature conservation, has unveiled a new knowledge product for measuring the ecological performance of cities: the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes (UNI). Comprising six themes with five indicator topics nested within each theme, the UNI is intended to help policymakers, stakeholders and local communities understand their impacts on nature, set science-based targets for improvement, and monitor progress using science-based measures. By enhancing environmental transparency and accountability, and by focusing on improvement rather than fixed targets, the UNI aims to catalyse local action for nature in all cities.

   

The Global Species Action Plan (GSAP) is a critical initiative developed to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), to address the increasing biodiversity loss worldwide. The GSAP outlines strategic interventions and actions to conserve and sustainably manage species while ensuring equitable benefits. Emphasizing the critical role of species in ecosystem stability, human livelihoods, and cultural heritage, the GSAP seeks to prevent extinctions, reduce threats, and ensure equitable benefits from species use. Implementation involves diverse stakeholders, including governments, Indigenous peoples and Local communities, NGOs, academia, and businesses, fostering cooperation at global, regional, and local levels. The GSAP underscores the collective responsibility to safeguard Earth’s rich biological heritage for future generations.

   

The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions lists the Criteria and Indicators, as adopted by the 98th Meeting of the IUCN Council in 2020.

   

Les solutions fondées sur la nature (SFN) sont de plus en plus considérées comme un moyen d’atteindre les objectifs de plusieurs accords mondiaux et peuvent être essentielles à une transition juste – si la bonne combinaison de politiques de transition juste est mise en œuvre. Mais il n’existe actuellement aucune garantie que les SFN généreront du travail décent. Elaboré conjointement par l'OIT, le PNUE et l'UICN, ce rapport est le premier d'une série de rapports biennaux mondiaux conjoints visant à combler les lacunes en termes de connaissances et de sensibilisation sur la manière dont les transitions vers une économie verte affecteront le monde du travail, ainsi que sur le rôle que les SFN peuvent jouer et jouent effectivement dans la création d'emplois, en particulier pour les personnes les plus pauvres et les plus vulnérables.

   

Las soluciones basadas en la naturaleza (SbN) se consideran cada vez más como una forma de cumplir los objetivos de varios acuerdos globales y pueden ser fundamentales para una transición justa, si se implementa la combinación adecuada de políticas de transición justa. Pero actualmente no hay garantía de que las SbN generen trabajo decente. Este informe, desarrollado conjuntamente por la OIT, el PNUMA y la UICN, es el primero de una serie conjunta de informes bienales globales que tiene como objetivo llenar el conocimiento y las lagunas en la promoción sobre cómo las transiciones hacia una economía verde afectarán el mundo del trabajo, y sobre el papel que las SbN pueden y desempeñan en la creación de empleo, especialmente para las personas más pobres y vulnerables.

Este Manual ha sido diseñado con el propósito de facilitar procesos locales de capacitación que conduzcan a identificar las manifestaciones de la violencia de género, reflexionar sobre sus impactos y adoptar compromisos de cambio a nivel personal, familiar y organizacional en las zonas marino-costeras (especialmente entornos de pesca artesanal).

Este Manual busca contribuir a la construcción de masculinidades no violentas en proyectos relacionados con la conservación y uso sostenible de los recursos costeros en Centroamérica. Se divide en 3 partes: 1. Manual del facilitador - Guía que utilizará el facilitador para ubicarse durante el desarrollo del proceso de capacitación; 2. Detalle de actividades - Herramienta que incluye los cuadros didácticos, objetivos y el desarrollo de las actividades detalladas, así como las reflexiones necesarias para generar conocimiento en los participantes; y 3. Marco conceptual de apoyo - Soporte teórico que tendrá el facilitador para el desarrollo del proceso de capacitación.

 

   

Soilless agriculture is a modern technology created to enable growing crops in an environment where traditional technologies are median. Several techniques stem from soilless agriculture e.g. hydroponics and aquaponics. Limited water resources, variations of precipitation and frequent droughts are typical challenges for arid areas. Hydroponics offer solutions to rationalize water consumption in arid to semi-arid areas particularly when agriculture is a main activity in those areas. This manual provides farmers with a clear methodology for impelenting soilless cultivation. In addition, the manual provides tips on how to use and maintain a solar system and a ready-made design drawing of the hydroponic system as a reference drawing for implementing the system.

   

North-East Badia, Jordan, is inhabited by half a million Syrian refugees and an equal number of Jordanians, whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. Working in the agricultural sector is characterized by low wages, long hours, poor working conditions, lack of occupational health and safety, and a high incidence of child labour. In addition, Jordan faces severe water scarcity, with annual demand roughly double the available supply and weak water resource management exacerbating the problem. Climate change further threatens the water supply and the agricultural sector, that is also constrained by limited arable land, while increased groundwater salinity in the past 30 years has had a negative impact on crop yield and farmer incomes. Innovative pathways are needed to improve the livelihoods of Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians in the agricultural sector.

   

L’Alliance urbaine de l’UICN, une large coalition d’entités constitutives de l’UICN concernées par les dimensions urbaines de la conservation de la nature, a dévoilé un nouvel produit de connaissance pour mesurer la performance écologique des villes : les Index de nature urbaine de l’UICN (en anglais « Urban Nature Indexes » ou INU). Composé de six thèmes et de cinq « sujets indicateurs » imbriqués dans chaque thème, les INU ont pour but d’aider les décideurs politiques, les parties prenantes et les communautés locales à comprendre leur impact sur la nature, à fixer des objectifs d’amélioration fondés sur la science et à suivre les progrès réalisés à l’aide de mesures scientifiques. En renforçant la transparence et la responsabilité environnementales, et en se concentrant sur l’amélioration plutôt que sur des objectifs fixes, les INU visent à catalyser l’action locale en faveur de la nature dans toutes les villes.

   

La Alianza Urbana de la UICN, una amplia coalición de Miembros de la UICN preocupados por las dimensiones urbanas de la conservación de la naturaleza, ha presentado un nuevo producto de conocimiento para medir el desempeño ecológico de las ciudades: los Índices de Naturaleza Urbana (INU) de la UICN. El INU, compuesto por seis temas con cinco temáticas anidadas en cada tema, una para cada indicador, pretende ayudar a los responsables de la formulación de políticas, a las partes interesadas y a las comunidades locales a comprender su impacto en la naturaleza, establecer objetivos de mejora basados en la ciencia y supervisar los avances utilizando, también, medidas basadas en la ciencia. Al aumentar la transparencia y la responsabilidad medioambientales, y al centrarse en la mejora más que en metas fijas, el INU busca catalizar la acción local en favor de la naturaleza en todas las ciudades.

   

With 26 case studies from 10 multinational companies, this publication highlights their positive actions, interventions and initiatives contributing to specific conservation and restoration goals. The concrete examples illustrate a pivotal part of their work which have direct impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem on their sites and operations, focused on a variety of additional and proactive biodiversity conservation and restoration actions more commonly within the landscape and seascape. The different case studies seek to present current voluntary practices and initiatives that are above and beyond addressing the negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services onsite. While not exhaustive, these case studies seek to be illustrative of current voluntary practices and demonstrative of some of the kinds of initiatives that are currently being carried out.

Nature (covering the water, biodiversity, soil/land, and air/climate realms) continues to decline with significant negative impacts on society. Businesses need to understand their impacts and  dependencies on nature, manage their nature-related risks and embed the value of nature into their decision making to identify and implement opportunities that contribute towards the nature-positive global goal. Achieving nature-positive requires collective action across sectors, value chains and landscapes. Fundamentally, nature positive represents a systemic and transformative shift rather than ‘re-shaping’ of current practices. Utilising prioritisation approaches can enable businesses to identify areas where they can have a material and meaningful  contribution from the outset as systemic and transformative change is adopted through the business.

The Arabian Peninsula contains a wide diversity of sand and gravel deserts, mountains, coastal and offshore habitats and sparse wetlands. It also contains a diverse mammal fauna which comprises a mix of Arabian endemics, species with affinities to the Horn of Africa and Saharo-Sindian, Iranian-Central Asian, and Mediterranean elements. There are 166 terrestrial and 23 marine species whose occurrence in the region is confirmed, giving an overall total of 189 confirmed species. The status of the terrestrial species was assessed using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and application of the IUCN Regional Guidelines. The distribution and status of each marine mammal species was reviewed and updated.

Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) are sites outside protected areas that deliver effective and long-term in situ conservation of biodiversity. Biodiversity conservation may be the primary objective of the site, a secondary objective of a site that is managed for other purposes, or it may be an unintended consequence of the way the site is managed. OECMs may be governed and managed by governments, private entities or Indigenous peoples and local communities, or a combination of these. This tool guides an assessor through three steps to apply eight criteria which determine if a site qualifies as an OECM as set out under the Convention on Biological Diversity. For sites which do not currently meet all the criteria, the tool serves to highlight areas where further information or improvements in governance and management are required.

   

Coastal blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrasses and target_idal marshes, are some of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth, and are vital to mitigating the impacts of climate change. They are also critical for coastal biodiversity, food security, livelihoods and human well-being, in addition to climate adaptation – protecting millions of people globally from the impacts of storms, coastal flooding and erosion. However, these ecosystems are threatened – half of global mangrove forests have already been lost – and once these ecosystems are degraded or destroyed, their carbon stores are released as carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change. This policy framework, developed by Conservation International and IUCN, provides an overview of the intersections and opportunities for blue carbon ecosystem conservation and restoration in the relevant international policy processes.

The coaching manual (COMIT) is for the second version of the Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET) and of coaching or professional support for protected area management teams. IMET is a decision-support tool intended to develop the planning-monitoring-evaluation process in order to improve protected area management effectiveness. It is suitable for all protected areas, regardless of their management and governance category. IMET collects, organises and visualises data related to protected areas in order to facilitate analysis and guide decision-making for the planning, management and organisation of operations.

Protected areas are considered one of the most effective and widely used methods for biodiversity conservation on a global scale. Therefore, effective, and equitable management and operation of these areas are crucial for conserving their biodiversity. Guidelines for evaluating the management effectiveness of protected areas have been developed, and their impact is widespread around the world. These guidelines serve as a means to adapt and replan the components of ecosystems and vital processes, addressing the increasing pressures on reserves. This technical guideline has been prepared and translated into Arabic, providing a step-by-step approach for evaluating the management effectiveness of protected areas, which can be adapted to the national context if necessary. It includes the tools used in the evaluation process, utilizing METT-4.

Protected areas are the basic corner stone for protecting and managing the world's biodiversity, given their major and effective role in reducing the degradation of many ecosystems and habitats as a result of unsustainable human practices. These guidelines will contribute to the day-to-day management of protected areas and targeting any person/ employee who participates or is responsible for the day-to-day management of the protected areas, especially the employees who participate in the management and implementation of wildlife enforcement and inspection programmes, local community engagement and development programmes, ecotourism programmes, outreach programmes, human resource management, institutional development and monitoring programmes, management planning and zoning plans.

   

The development of linear transport infrastructure (LTI) can have a variety of direct and indirect impacts on protected and conserved areas (PCAs) and other intact areas with high biodiversity and ecological connectivity values. Poorly planned and constructed roads, railways and canals can sever habitats, disrupt ecosystems and threaten species. However, a growing number of solutions are available for overcoming these challenges, balancing the social and economic benefits of LTI development with ecological well-being. This technical report provides an overview of practical, feasible science-based strategies for PCA managers, transport practitioners, industry, conservationists and other stakeholders interested in biodiversity and ecological connectivity conservation in, and adjacent to, PCAs. It identifies effective solutions that can be used in a variety of contexts around the world and promotes best practices for the various phases of infrastructure development: planning, design, construction, operations and monitoring. Furthermore, it underscores the need for cross-sectoral commitments to good governance, effective policies, and financing for avoiding and mitigating the impacts of LTI on the environment.

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention is one of the most widely ratified international treaties, and a place on the World Heritage List is a widely coveted mark of distinction. Building on ethnographic fieldwork at Committee sessions, interviews and documentary study, the book links the change in operations of the World Heritage Committee with structural nation-centeredness, vulnerable procedures for evaluation, monitoring and decision-making, and loose heritage conceptions that have been inconsistently applied. As the most ambitious study of the World Heritage arena so far, this volume dissects the inner workings of a prominent global body, demonstrating the power of ethnography in the highly formalised and diplomatic context of a multilateral organisation.

   

The Galápagos pink land iguana (Conolophus marthae) is categorised as Critically Endangered. The entire distribution of pink iguanas is within the protected area of the Galápagos National Park (GNP), which is managed by the Galápagos National Park Directorate (GNPD). This conservation and management plan (2022–2027) has the vision to ensure the long-term survival of Galápagos pink land iguanas in the wild, and as a general objective to establish a comprehensive conservation programme for Galápagos pink land iguanas that facilitates their recovery and persistence in the wild. The plan prioritises a set of strategies that will be addressed in the time frame set for this. Section three includes an overview of each strategy.

   

La iguana rosada de Galápagos (Conolophus marthae) está clasificada como En Peligro Crítico de Extinción. La distribución de la iguana rosada se encuentra dentro del área protegida del Parque Nacional Galápagos (PNG), el cual es administrado por la Dirección del Parque Nacional Galápagos (DPNG). Este plan de conservación y manejo (2022-2027) tiene la visión de asegurar la supervivencia a largo plazo de la iguana rosada de Galápagos en la naturaleza y como objetivo general establecer un programa de conservación integral para la iguana rosada de Galápagos que facilite su recuperación y persistencia en la naturaleza. El plan prioriza un conjunto de estrategias que serán abordadas en el plazo previsto para ello.
