Governance is a crucial factor in the equity, effectiveness and sustainability of forest landscape restoration (FLR). The Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) provides a framework for governments, rights-holders and stakeholders to define and prioritise FLR options. This publication presents lessons learned and offers recommendations on governance aspects of the ROAM framework and process. It aims to reinforce the ability of ROAM to inform effective, equitable and sustainable FLR. The analysis uses the IUCN Natural Resource Governance Framework as its primary lens and also takes into account the FLR principles agreed to by the Global Partnership on FLR.

As the World Heritage Convention celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022, over 1100 sites around the world are recognized as World Heritage - places  that are so valuable to humanity that there conservation has been deemed our collective responsibility. Yet many of these exceptional places face  increasing pressure from diverse types of development projects within and around the sites. Assessing the impacts of such projects is essential to both prevent damage to World Heritage and identify sustainable options. This Guidance and toolkit explains the process for achieving these goals. Offering practical tips and tools including checklists and a glossary, it provides a framework for conducting impact assessments for cultural and natural heritage sites.

Connectivity conservation is essential for managing healthy ecosystems, conserving biodiversity and adapting to climate change across all biomes and spatial scales. Well-connected ecosystems support a diversity of ecological functions such as migration, hydrology, nutrient cycling, pollination, seed dispersal, food security, climate resilience and disease resistance. These Guidelines are based on the best available science and practice for maintaining, enhancing and restoring ecological connectivity among and between protected areas, other effective areas based conservation measures (OECMs) and other intact ecosystems. For the first time, this publication introduces a common definition and recommends formal recognition of ecological corridors to serve as critical building blocks of ecological networks in conjunction with protected areas and OECMs. Furthermore, these Guidelines also include 25 case studies that demonstrate current approaches to conserving ecological connectivity and ecological networks for different ecosystems and species, and at different spatial and temporal scales.

   

This report presents the results of a broad assessment of the freshwater diversity in four Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and some key additional sites in the Sebou river basin in Morocco.

   

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. The purpose of the Guidelines for using A Global Standard for the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas is to ensure that KBA identification is based on consistent, scientifically rigorous yet practical methods. The KBA Guidelines provide an overview of the steps for identifying and delineating KBAs, together with explanation of how the KBA criteria, thresholds and delineation procedures should be applied in practice. The KBA Guidelines should be used hand-in-hand with the KBA Standard (IUCN, 2016).

Illegal trade in wildlife has increased dramatically over the past decade; however, so have enforcement efforts aimed at mitigating this threat. Successful enforcement often involves the seizure and confiscation of wild species from diverse taxa of plants, animals and fungi. These confiscations may be parts of non-living specimens in the form of artefacts, food or medicinal products but, in many cases, they involve live individuals. With increasingly frequent confiscations and often high numbers of individuals involved, it is important that best practice management approaches are followed to maximise the conservation role and the individual welfare of these plants and animals. These Guidelines aim to provide guidance on this best practice.

One of the main challenges for conservation today is monitoring and understanding changes in biodiversity. Genetic diversity provides the foundation for biodiversity and is necessary for long-term survival, adaptation, and resilience not only for individuals, but also for populations, species, and entire ecosystems. Monitoring genetic diversity across different time points is a first step to gain insight into the extent to which populations or species might be at risk, to guide conservation action and to provide evidence for solutions. This guidance document aims to be a resource that guides the reader through the decision and evaluation processes that take place when designing a genetic diversity monitoring programme and identifying the most appropriate set of species or populations to monitor. This guidance document is intended for practitioners (including governmental agencies, NGOs, but also locally responsible conservationists such as land managers) who need to monitor genetic diversity of species in the wild.

IMET est un outil d’aide à la décision destiné à faire avancer le processus de planification-suivi-évaluation pour améliorer l’efficacité de la gestion des aires protégées. Il est adapté à toutes les aires protégées, indépendamment de leur catégorie de gestion et de gouvernance. IMET recueille, organise et visualise les données relatives aux aires protégées pour en faciliter l’analyse et orienter la prise de décisions pour la planification, la gestion et l’organisation des opérations.

   

This report presents the main achievements, new projects, partnerships and highlights of IUCN-Med’s work in 2021. Available in English, Spanish and French.

   

Knowledge gathered over the past four years in the IUCN Close the Plastic Tap programme is the basis of this publication. It presents a summary of methodologies, results, and key lessons learned from the use of the UNEP/IUCN National Guidance for Plastic Pollution Hotspotting and Shaping Action in Kenya, Menorca (Spain), Mozambique, Republic of Cyprus, South Africa, Thailand, United Republic of Tanzania, and Viet Nam. The key takeaway from this research is that there is a pressing need to use sciencebased plastic leakage assessments to drive policy and behavioural changes that will reduce plastic pollution. Furthermore, IUCN’s comprehensive methodology and tools provide a holistic package to build capacity for stakeholders to understand and manage marine plastic pollution.

These guidelines address planning and management of privately protected areas (PPAs) and the guidance is aimed principally at practitioners and policy makers, who are or may be involved with PPAs. Guidance is given on all aspects of PPA establishment, management and reporting, and information is provided on principles and best practices, with examples drawn from many different parts of the world. The aim of these guidelines is to shape the application of IUCN policy and principles towards enhanced effectiveness and conservation outcomes, focused on PPA managers and administrators. Not all the guidance will necessarily apply in all social, political and economic contexts. However, learning from best practices around the world and considering how these can be incorporated at site or national level may improve the likelihood of success in private conservation and suggest how conditions might be improved to favour PPAs and thus capitalise on the opportunities they present.

   

These guidelines provide an update and expansion of the original Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection, published in 1997. The original guidelines were primarily concerned with geoheritage, and while this remains an important consideration in this second edition, it also covers the biological issues involved in cave and karst conservation. The protection of surface and underground karst ecosystems is particularly relevant to Goal 15 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss). These guidelines also have relevance for Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all), as ~10% of the world's population gain their water supplies fro karst, either from discrete springs or from karst groundwater. The new guidelines build and expand on the Guidelines for geoconservation in protected and conserved areas (Crofts et al.,2020), by specifically considering the protection and conservation of geodiversity, geoheritage and ecology in karst and cave areas, wherever they occur.
