Este informe presenta los resultados de la aplicación del Barómetro de la Restauración en México, considerando las particularidades del contexto nacional, la disponibilidad de información y las pautas metodológicas que provee la guía del Barómetro para los gobiernos. El objetivo de esta publicación es dar a conocer las acciones e impactos asociados  con los avances de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos hacía los compromisos de restauración adquiridos en el marco del Desafió de Bonn. Asimismo, genera información de utilidad para continuar y optimizar los procesos de inversión y planificación de la restauración en el país como parte del Decenio de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Restauración de los Ecosistemas.

The circular economy is a positive step forward to help achieve our environmental targets. When implemented with nature in mind, it can present an important opportunity for nature and biodiversity. As outlined by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 we will need to transform our production and consumption systems. This is precisely what the circular economy aims to address. This report thus takes a close look at both the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan and the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and explores the relationship between the circular economy and biodiversity, especially from a policy point of view.

Esta metodología para la evaluación participativa de pastizales y tierras de pastoreo (denominada PRAGA) se desarrolló a través del proyecto "Evaluación participativa de la degradación de la tierra y la gestión sostenible de la tierra en sistemas de pastizales y pastos", financiado por el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial y ejecutado por FAO y la UICN. La metodología se probó en cinco países (Burkina Faso, Kenia, Kirguistán, Níger y Uruguay) para comprobar su eficacia y valor. Se hicieron las revisiones necesarias a la metodología, basadas en las lecciones aprendidas de su aplicación. Este informe documenta las buenas prácticas de gestión de los pastizales y tierras de pastoreo como una forma de informar las decisiones sobre la gestión de los mismos; y generar conciencia sobre la importancia de las prácticas de gestión identificadas localmente. Destaca el hecho de que estas prácticas de gestión de los pastizales no coinciden necesariamente con las prácticas definidas por los científicos y ecólogos. El público objetivo de este documento de trabajo incluye a los responsables de la toma de decisiones, a los gestores de las tierras, a otros usuarios de las mismas y a los científicos.

In this publication, we take stock of the knowledge and know-how induced by the BIODEV2030 project’s first step, which is to assess the main threats to biodiversity and provide elements to address the following specific questions: how were main threats to biodiversity identified and ranked and associated sectors selected in each country? Were the different methods converging in identifying top threats? What are their respective strengths, limitations and complementarities? What recommendations can we make to other actors (governments, NGOs, donors such as multilateral or bilateral development banks)  wanting to follow similar approaches with the private sectors at national level? In each BIODEV2030 country, three main methods were typically combined to identify and rank main threats to biodiversity and then select (sub-)sectors: literature and data sources review, Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric and national experts’ elicitation. The results of the assessment and its processes led to a list of 12 key recommendations.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are seen as a response to many societal challenge. It is becoming increasingly obvious that protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are a major vehicle for NbS and essential to their success in many situations. This publication argues that with appropriate and implemented safeguarding policies, together NbS and PCAs are some of the best routes we have for providing a decent future for people and the planet by combining many important elements of sustainable development.

   

This report presents the results of a broad assessment of freshwater diversity in the Douro river basin in Spain and Portugal. The Douro river basin is the largest of the Iberian Peninsula, and an ecological region of great value due to the high diversity of ecosystems and the number of species. A total of 14 sites, either identified as Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) or potential KBA sites, were surveyed for fish and macroinvertebrate species. More than 120 species were detected, with more than 10 species listed as threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM.

Com base no volume de rejeitos lançados e na extensão das áreas atingidas, o rompimento da Barragem de Fundão, em Mariana, Minas Gerais, foi o maior desastre ambiental de todos os tempos na mineração brasileira, e um dos mais graves do mundo. Ao serem transportados a jusante da barragem rompida, os rejeitos foram se acumulando ao longo dos rios e alcançaram o estuário do Rio Doce, na ecorregião marinha do Leste brasileiro, afetando importantes ecossistemas. Neste Relatório Temático, o Painel do Rio Doce aborda o desafio de transformar dados e informações obtarget_idos por meio de monitoramento em conhecimento capaz de subsidiar decisões sobre mitigação de impactos. É proposta uma abordagem metodológica para avaliar os conhecimentos atuais sobre os impactos do desastre em áreas costeiras e marinhas.

Based on the volume of tailings releases and the distance they travelled, the Fundão Dam failure in southeast Brazil (Mariana, Minas Gerais state) was the largest ever environmental disaster in Brazil’s mining industry, and one of the world’s most serious. As they dispersed downriver, the tailings accumulated along the riverbanks and reached the Rio Doce estuary in the Eastern Brazilian Marine Ecoregion. When the dam failed, the mining company and government agencies conducted rapid assessments. But while the government set up a five-year monitoring programme, it took almost a year after the disaster to issue official guidelines and another two years of negotiations and approvals before the data collection began. In this Thematic Report, the Rio Doce Panel looks at government mandated monitoring reports as well as peerreviewed papers, most of which were authored by independent researchers, to assess our knowledge about the disaster’s impacts on marine and coastal areas.

   

Given the vital role of power lines for social development, the rapid spread of such infrastructure worldwide and the fact that power lines can be one of the main causes of direct mortality for several species of birds and other wildlife, including mammals, it is essential to have suitable tools to ensure that these lines are built and maintained in accordance with environmentally friendly principles, and that priority is given to avoiding and reducing negative impacts. This manual is intended to be a technical guide for use by all stakeholders, from companies and businesses in the energy sector to authorities and government planners, investors and civil society. It contains recommendations and standard good practices for avoiding the adverse effects of new power lines and managing risks early in the process, so as to ensure that infrastructure expansion takes account of biodiversity in the spatial planning and early project implementation phases, when they will be most effective. It also contains case studies from around the globe.

   

Wetlands are among the world’s most productive and valuable ecosystems and are an integral part of many ecosystems. This book attempts to raise awareness on the relevance of wetland systems and their current impacts and existency threats in different regions of the world. It aims at describing the status, challenges and loss of wetlands related to conflicts between anthropic activities and natural ecosystem services fundamental for people’s livelihoods. It compiles 14 case studies from different regions in the world and wetlands typologies, including terrestrial, riverine, estuaries, marine coastal wetlands but also island wetlands.

World Heritage glaciers cover almost 10% of the Earth’s glacierized area and play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. However, they are retreating at an accelerated rate because of climate change. By combining satellite data and projections at the site level, this study quantifies the extent of World Heritage glaciers’ retreat and its impact on global sea-level rise and provides projections of glacier mass loss. It also provides key information to facilitate dialogue between policymakers and local stakeholders in the development of effective actions to counteract substantial glacier retreat and to respond to subsequent inevitable changes in glacierized sites.

   

This report offers an overview of the work by the Save our Mangroves Now! (SOMN) initiative in the region to date, bringing together data on extent, loss and gains, and the socio-economic value of mangroves in the region, as well as governance challenges and policy opportunities. We hope this will support national efforts and inform the development of a regional mangrove action plan in the Western Indian Ocean region, enabling coordinated and collective action on mangrove conservation and restoration. In addition, we created the guiding principles on sustainable mangrove ecosystem management and aspire for them to guide the design of collective action at the national and regional level in the Western Indian Ocean region and beyond.

   

The Conserving our sea of islands report provides the first comprehensive assessment of area-based conservation in the region. The 23 countries and territories that it covers are diverse but share a common identity and geography, as well as many other features such as extensive customary ownership. The purpose of the report is to document the status of protected and conserved areas in Oceania; review and outline progress made towards achieving national and international targets for protected and conserved areas, including for coverage, representativeness, connectivity and effectiveness; showcase the achievements and learnings from across the region to promote effective management practices; and review and highlight relevant regional protected and conserved area issues and provide guidance for strengthening their management effectiveness, governance and equity.

   

This participatory grassland and rangeland assessment (PRAGA) methodology was developed for the assessment of rangelands and grasslands in selected project countries. It was developed through the project “Participatory assessment of land degradation and sustainable land management in grassland and pastoral systems”, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The methodology was piloted in five countries – Burkina Faso, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Niger and Uruguay – to test its effectiveness and value. Necessary revisions were made to the methodology, based on lessons learned from its application. This document contains background information on global grasslands and rangelands and describes the need and the guiding principle for rangeland health assessments and practical guidance on how to conduct cost-effective assessment.

These Guidelines are intended to help improve the conservation and management of geoheritage and geodiversity in protected and conserved areas and recognition of the interrelationships and interactions with biological features and processes. They are not a textbook on geoconservation management practice, but rather set out the essential background, context and principles. The use of best practice examples from around the world will hopefully give users renewed confidence in looking after geoheritage and in connecting geoconservation with biodiversity conservation.
