The World Heritage thematic study for Central Asia has been produced as a contribution to supporting the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Central Asia. It provides a response to a Decision of the World Heritage Committee in order to identify outstanding areas with potential for future nomination to the World Heritage List with primary focus on criteria (ix) and (x) at the regional scale. The approach applied in this study, focusing on criteria (ix) and (x), follows that from the 2013 study on terrestrial biodiversity and the World Heritage List. Criteria (ix) and (x) are clearly the primary ones for recognition of extant biodiversity values, and they have been applied to a wide range of biodiversity features, including ecosystems, species, and ecological and/or biological processes. Although this study is an initial assessment, most areas and sites recommended here have appeared repeatedly as being of particular interest for biodiversity conservation during the work process, whether through literature analysis or in discussions with experts and specialists. The recommendations reflect the current level of knowledge that should be strengthened in the future, to ensure that the identified areas and sites are well supported with the necessary data and empirical evidence to address the requirements of the Operational Guidelines. 

   

Women play a key role in nature conservation, yet they often lack the inputs, technologies, training and extension services, and various enablers and linkages that can enhance the effectiveness of their efforts. Evidence indicates that gender-inclusive and gender-sensitive conservation practices have far-reaching multiplier impacts. This report brings out gender-specific knowledge for ecosystem management in mountain regions. Insights are collated from India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, and the Togo-Ghana Highlands. The chapters capture diverse approaches to nature stewardship examined through a gender lens at the regional, national and sub-national level.

The Himalaya proper is commonly defined as the rugged arc between the Tibetan Plateau and the Ganges Plain stretching from the Indus River in the northwest to the great bend of the Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo) in the east. The natural and cultural wealth of the HKH region is as overwhelming as its scenic beauty. The same holds true for the region’s enormous ecosystem services underpinning the livelihoods, food security and energy provision of a substantial part of the world’s human population in the region itself and downstream along the numerous major rivers originating in it. It is clear that such an exceptional region is of significant relevance to an intergovernmental agreement with the objective to identify and conserve the world’s most precious cultural and natural heritage, the World Heritage Convention. This assessment is strictly technical in nature; it aims at shedding light on the regional potential of the Convention from a nature conservation perspective based on a literature review and expert consultation.

This report analyses the current state of knowledge regarding the role of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in climate change mitigation. It shows that in order to keep temperature rising to 1.5 degrees and achieve net zero by 2050 a significant contribution from NbS is both necessary and possible, provided the necessary finance is made available. It assesses the role that carbon offsets can play in the overall finance package.

World Heritage forests are some of the most biodiversity-rich habitats on Earth and play a crucial role in climate regulation by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. However, these forests are under increasing anthropogenic pressures, including climate change. By combining remote sensing data with site-level monitoring, this report has quantified the climate benefits of World Heritage forests for the first time, assessed the impacts on carbon of common threats to World Heritage forests and identified sites that are net carbon sources. It therefore provides information to facilitate dialogues between policymakers and local stakeholders for the development of effective solutions aimed at maintaining the continuing role of World Heritage forests as sinks and stable carbon stores for future generations.

Recent developments have seen forest landscape restoration (FLR) become widely recognized as an important means of not only restoring ecological integrity at scale but also generating additional local-to-global benefits. This handbook presents the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), which provides a flexible and affordable framework for countries to rapidly identify and analyse FLR potential and locate special areas of opportunity at a national or sub-national level. The handbook offers practical advice and options to bear in mind when considering or conducting an FLR assessment using ROAM, as well as real-life examples of the kinds of outputs you can expect, and will enable you to commission or design a tailor-made process to meet your specific needs.

   

Em novembro de 2018, tal situação foi resolvida quando, na COP 14 da CDB, as Partes adotaram uma definição de “outra medida efetiva de conservação baseada em área”, bem como os princípios orientadores, as características comuns e os critérios para a identificação das OMECs (CDB/COP/ DEC/14/8). As OMECs podem ser geridas visando vários objetivos diferentes, mas devem apresentar resultados efetivos de conservação. Nas OMECs, a conservação pode ser um objetivo principal ou secundário ou a conservação em longo prazo pode ser simplesmente um resultado complementar das atividades de gestão. As OMECs podem contribuir para que os sistemas de conservação sejam ecologicamente representativos e bem conectados, integrados a paisagens terrestres e marinhas mais amplas, gerando assim uma série de resultados positivos de conservação. Este relatório foi elaborado pelo Grupo de Trabalho da CMAP sobre OMECs visando ajudar as Partes a interpretar e operacionalizar a Decisão 14/8, assim como começar a desenvolver um conjunto de boas práticas relacionadas com o reconhecimento e relato das OMECs. Ele está planejado para ser aplicado em várias escalas, que vão desde entender se uma área individual é uma OMEC, até apresentar estatísticas no âmbito nacional e mundial como meio para avaliar o progresso no alcance das metas de conservação.

   

En noviembre del 2018, en la 14ª Convención de los Miembros del CDB, los participantes adoptaron una definición de “otras medidas efectivas de conservación basadas en áreas” (OMEC), y determinaron sus principios rectores, características comunes y criterios para su identificación (CDB/COP/ DEC/14/8). Estas pueden ser gestionadas con objetivos diferentes, pero deben obtener resultados efectivos de conservación. En ellas, la conservación a largo plazo es un objetivo primario, secundario o, incluso, simplemente un resultado subisidiario de la gestión del área. Las OMEC contribuyen a tener sistemas de conservación ecológicamente representativos y bien conectados, integrados en paisajes terrestres y marinos más amplios y, al hacerlo, generan una serie de resultados positivos para la conservación. Este informe técnico fue elaborado por el Grupo de Trabajo de la CMAP encargado de las OMEC, con el fin de ayudar  a los Miembros a interpretar y poner en práctica la Decisión 14/8, así como de empezar a desarrollar un conjunto de buenas prácticas en relación con el reconocimiento y reporte de las OMEC. Está diseñado para ser aplicado en diversas escalas, que van desde entender si un área individual es una OMEC hasta reportar estadísticas a nivel nacional y mundial, como un medio para evaluar el progreso en alcanzar las metas de conservación.

   

This think piece presents recommendations of the Science Task Force (STF) of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and comprised of leading subject experts as specific actions to be undertaken by public and private stakeholders to sustain and restore the diverse and functioning ecosystems essential for human wellbeing and the preservation of biodiversity. These are to be aligned with ongoing efforts to scale up the prevention and reversal of ecosystem degradation globally. It provides a framework of questions, key messages and recommendations.

Ces Lignes directrices sont destinées à améliorer la conservation et la gestion du géopatrimoine et de la géodiversité dans les aires protégées et conservées, et à reconnaître les interrelations et interactions avec les caractéristiques et processus biologiques. Elles n’ont pas vocation à être un manuel sur les pratiques de gestion de la géoconservation, mais plutôt à présenter le contexte et les principes de base. L’utilisation d’exemples de meilleures pratiques du monde entier devrait donner aux utilisateurs une confiance  renforcée pour préserver le géopatrimoine et connecter la géoconservation avec la conservation de la biodiversité.

   

Along with defining the measures needed to achieve ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), solid governance components are imperative to make it effective. Such governance must be flexible, participatory, multarget_idimensional and include ecosystem-based approaches (maintain ecosystem structure and function to guarantee human well-being). The aim of this book is to reflect upon and assess enabling and indispensable conditions for EbA governance and scaling, particularly in the Meso American region, with recommendations for implementation in this region and others with similar characteristics.

Governance is a critical determinant of the social equity, effectiveness and sustainability of natural resource use and conservation. Improving natural resource governance, including securing rights and sharing power and responsibilities, benefits both people and nature. Despite this, governance remains relatively poorly understood and weakly addressed in many natural resource and conservation contexts. The Natural Resource Governance Framework (NRGF) is an IUCN knowledge product created to provide a robust, inclusive and credible approach to assessing and improving natural resource governance at multiple levels and in diverse contexts. This publication presents the NRGF as it has been developed to date through a robust and inclusive process involving IUCN experts, Members and partners.

   

L’Afrique occidentale est riche en biodiversité d’eau douce et en endémicité régionale, soutenant l’ensemble des populations mondiales de nombreuses espèces d’eau douce menacées, notamment les poissons, les mollusques, les libellules, les crabes, les crevettes et les plantes aquatiques. Ce rapport s’appuie sur une évaluation de référence régionale réalisée en 2009 ainsi que sur une évaluation des Zones clés pour la biodiversité (KBAs) d’eau douce en 2015. L’état de conservation des espèces d’eau douce est en déclin, mais il est frappant de constater l’absence de données de surveillance suffisantes pour révéler les tendances de conservation des espèces d’eau douce, de nombreuses espèces n’ayant pas été observées depuis des décennies. Ce rapport identifie les principales menaces qui pèsent sur des espèces et des sites spécifiques, et formule des recommandations pour la conservation de ces sites en tant que Zones clés pour la biodiversité.

   

Western Africa is rich in freshwater biodiversity and regional endemicity, supporting the entire global populations of many threatened freshwater species including fishes, molluscs, dragonflies, crabs, shrimps and aquatic plants. This report builds on a regional baseline assessment completed in 2009 as well as an assessment of freshwater Key Biodiversity Areas in 2015. The conservation status of freshwater species is found to be declining, but strikingly there is a lack of sufficient monitoring data to reveal conservation trends of freshwater species, with many species not having been observed for decades. This report identifies key threats to specific species and locations, making recommendations for the conservation of these sites as Key Biodiversity Areas, as well as highlighting specific sites in urgent need of surveys and identifying critical research actions.

The Synthesis report provides a high-level overview of the main themes addressed in the Guidelines on mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with solar and wind energy development, published in 2021. The Guidelines aim to provide practical support for solar and wind energy devel-opments to effectively manage risks and improve biodiversity and ecosystem service outcomes. They are industry-focused and can be applied across the whole project development life cycle, from early planning through to decommissioning and repow-ering, using the mitigation hierarchy as a clear framework for planning and implementation.

Achieving a climate-resilient future requires rapid, sustained and far-reaching transformations in energy, land-use, infrastructure and industrial systems. Large-scale expansion of renewable energy can play a critical role in meeting the world’s growing energy demands and in the fight against climate change. However, even ‘clean’ energy sources can have significant unintended impacts on the environment. The guidelines aim to provide practical support for solar and wind energy developments by effectively managing risks and improving overall outcomes related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They are industry-focused and can be applied across the whole project development life cycle, from early planning through to decommissioning and repowering, using the mitigation hierarchy as a clear framework for planning and implementation. The mitigation hierarchy is applied to direct, indirect and cumulative impacts. The catalogue of resources relevant to mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with solar and wind energy development (Annex 1 of the publication) is available as a separate, downloadable, spreadsheet.
