The Eastern Mediterranean fish field guide covers the most common fish species found in the Eastern Mediterranean, off the Lebanese coast. It presents a selection of 176 species spread across 89 families. The publication offers information summarising natural environments, behaviours, appearances, biology and The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species conservation status in the Mediterranean region.

L’Horizon du patrimoine mondial de l’UICN 3 s’appuie sur les trois cycles des Évaluations des perspectives de conservation réalisées depuis 2014. Il présente les principaux résultats pour 2020, mais aussi certaines tendances à plus long terme, en se basant sur une comparaison des trois ensembles de données aujourd’hui disponibles. Il peut donc servir d’indicateur de l’efficacité des aires protégées et conservées, à un moment où la communauté internationale cherche à mesurer les avancées vers la réalisation des objectifs mondiaux de la biodiversité, et définit son Cadre mondial pour la biodiversité pour l’après-2020. Se concentrant sur les valeurs naturelles pour lesquelles ces sites sont inscrits, les menaces qui pèsent sur ces valeurs, et l’efficacité des mesures pour les protéger, l’Horizon du patrimoine mondial de l’UICN évalue les perspectives de conservation de tous les sites naturels du patrimoine mondial. Ces sites sont mondialement reconnus comme les zones naturelles les plus significatives sur terre, et leur conservation doit répondre aux normes les plus élevées de la Convention du patrimoine mondial.

Este informe presenta una metodología espacialmente explícita para identificar áreas prioritarias para la restauración funcional del paisaje a partir de la optimización de la prestación de servicios ecosistémicos.El objetivo de esta publicación es mostrar cómo el uso de la  Herramienta de Optimización de Oportunidades de Restauración (ROOT, por sus siglas en inglés) puede informar cuales áreas generarán el mayor impacto positivo con las acciones de restauración propuestas por el Comité Técnico de Restauración de Costa Rica. El análisis muestra el impacto de las acciones propuestas sobre los servicios ecosistémicos y su demanda para aportar al diseño de proyectos, y dar a conocer  programas o estrategias para la restauración de paisajes.

These guidelines offer an approach for developing a corporate-level biodiversity strategic plan, including measurable goals and objectives and a set of core linked  indicators, that will allow companies to measure their biodiversity performance across their operations. The Guidelines can be used by any company in any sector that has impacts and dependencies on biodiversity, whether large or small, national or multinational. They are aimed at sustainability teams, managers and other company staff whose roles include strategic planning and reporting related to biodiversity. The focus is on a full-cycle, results-based management approach (not just risk analyses, goal setting or indicator development), since assessing pressures on biodiversity, and planning and developing measurable goals, are key prerequisites for monitoring. They also explain how, by choosing and using appropriate core indicators and building internal capacity and partnerships, companies can aggregate and use biodiversity data at the corporate level in a meaningful way.

This spawning calendar gathers information for commercial marine fish native to Lebanon. Fish samples were collected from various ports around the country and thoroughly analysed, providing some valuable insight on the native fish population. Considered essential for future fishery management plans, it will in turn contribute to a more efficient, sustainable management of the marine ecosystems.

   

In November 2018, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted at the 14th Conference of the Parties a definition of an "other effective area-based conservation measure" (OECM) as well as guiding principles, common characteristics and criteria for identification of OECMs (CBD/COP/DEC/14/8). OECMs may be managed for many different objectives but they must deliver effective conservation. They may be managed with conservation as a primary or secondary objective or long-term conservation may simply be the ancillary result of management activities. OECMs can contribute to ecologically representative and well-connected conservation systems, integrated within wider landscapes and seascapes, and in doing so, generate a range of positive conservation outcomes. The WCPA Task Force on OECMs has produced these guidelines to assist Parties in interpreting and operationalising Decision 14/8 and to start to develop a body of good practice around recognising and reporting OECMs. It is designed for application at various scales, ranging from understanding whether an individual area is an OECM to reporting OECM statistics at the national and global level as a means to assess progress on achieving conservation targets.

This scoping study has been developed to enable better understanding of the Serbian national context, in terms of the institutional, policy and legal framework and reveal the key challenges for the application of Nature-Based Solutions along with the recommendations and entry points for the mainstreaming of Nature-Based Solutions into national disaster risk reduction and climate change policies and strategies.

   

Drawing on examples from the tech and startup sectors, IUCN developed the idea of an incubator to identify and nurture ideas coming from protected and conservation area managers and stakeholders who lack the knowledge, resources, or professional contacts to make them a reality: the IUCN Incubator for Nature Conservation (INC). The objective of the present document is to pull together the key lessons, examples and resources generated through the INC pilot projects to inform future conservation finance projects and help bridge the gap between conservation and investment.

   

Aquaculture production has very significantly increased in tonnage and value over the last decades. It is seen as a potential solution to replace the declining wild fishery stocks. This publication is a first attempt to examine aquaculture systems within the recent framework of the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions (NbS). It reviews the critical contextual situation, highlighting major issues related to climate change, biodiversity losses and endangered marine ecosystems. It stresses the need for new approaches, such as the concept of NbS, to improve human ability to implement sustainable development and to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This situation analysis presents a thorough, evidence-based examination of the relationship between wildlife and zoonosis, wildlife and emerging human pathogens and associated diseases, their origins, drivers, and risk factors. There is considerable divergence of opinion around the subject both within and outside the biodiversity conservation community and given the ontological challenges and highly different perspectives, contradictory narrative is unsurprising. Context is all-important and to clarify this in the analysis, the evidence of human diseases coming from wildlife is compared to diseases emerging from domestic animals and humans themselves, to provide context and proportions of the relative risk. The report highlights key knowledge, and provides perspective on where research, policy, interventions, and capacity building are needed to reduce risks of zoonoses and emergent animal-origin human diseases globally.

   

This think piece presents recommendations of the Science Task Force (STF) of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and comprised of leading subject experts as specific actions to be undertaken by public and private stakeholders to sustain and restore the diverse and functioning ecosystems essential for human wellbeing and the preservation of biodiversity. These are to be aligned with ongoing efforts to scale up the prevention and reversal of ecosystem degradation globally. It provides a framework of questions, key messages and recommendations.

   

These Guidelines aim to be equally relevant for any taxon on Earth. Recent experience has shown that no two planning situations are the same. So while the principles of planning may be constant, the purpose of the planning and the circumstances, the information available and its accuracy, and other factors, all combine to make every situation unique. This then demands a planning process that is both rigorous in analysis but flexible in its application. The Guidelines are very much an evolution based on experience, rather than a fundamental replacement of the 2008 Handbook (Strategic Planning for Species: A Handbook).

Sie sind kein Lehrbuch für das Management des Schutzes des Geo-Naturerbes, sondern stellen vielmehr den wesentlichen Hintergrund, den Kontext und die Prinzipien dar. Die Verwendung von Best-Practice-Beispielen aus der ganzen Welt wird den Nutzern hoffentlich neues Vertrauen in die Pflege des Geo-Naturerbes und in die Verbindung zwischen Schutz des Geo-Naturerbes und Biodiversitätsschutz geben.
