Alongside their contribution to biodiversity conservation, protected and conserved areas are increasingly recognised as important sources of a wide range of benefits, or ecosystem services, that humans gain from intact, natural ecosystems. Well-governed and well-managed protected areas are among the most effective tools for maintaining ecosystems – such as forests, natural grasslands, coastal areas and freshwater wetlands – and their associated ecosystem services. This report explores how protected areas contribute to achieving the SDGs. It does this by analysing case studies from PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet, an initiative of IUCN and several partners that aims to provide knowledge and facilitate exchange and learning on successful approaches in conservation and sustainable development, and to support the broader application of proven solutions.

This report is based on extensive literature search to reveal the elements of animal and plan biodiversity in the State of Kuwait, and points out missing information on other little-known groups. Despite its small area, Kuwait enjoys a rich fauna, given its desert and marine habitats. Hundreds of published scientific papers and reference books were reviewied to amass all species, fauna and flora, that were reported from Kuwait. Conservation status for several groups according to the IUCN listing are included.

   

This Guidance for using the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions accompanies the Global Standard to provide the scientific basis and guidance for users.

   

The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions lists the Criteria and Indicators, as adopted by the 98th Meeting of the IUCN Council in 2020.

   

La iguana de cola espinosa de Útila, Ctenosaura bakeri (Stejneger, 1901), es una iguana En Peligro Crítico endémica de la isla de Útila, en el archipiélago de las Islas de la Bahía de Honduras.  La especie se encuentra casi exclusivamente en el altamente dinámico hábitat de manglares de Útila (Gutsche, 2005) y está amenazada por la intrusión de actividades antropogénicas, ya que la destrucción y el desarrollo del hábitat continúan en toda la isla. Al reunir la experiencia local e internacional, este plan de acción de cinco años comunica una serie de pasos y objetivos diseñados para facilitar el manejo de la conservación de las iguanas de cola espinosa de Útila. 

   

The Útila spiny-tailed iguana, Ctenosaura bakeri (Stejneger, 1901), is a Critically Endangered iguana endemic to the island of Útila, in the Bay Islands archipelago of Honduras.  The species occurs almost exclusively in the highly dynamic mangrove habitat on Útila (Gutsche, 2005), and is threatened by the encroachment of anthropogenic activities, as habitat destruction and development continue across the island. Bringing together local and international expertise, this 5-year action plan communicates a series of steps and goals designed to facilitate the conservation management of Útila spiny-tailed iguanas.

Atividades extrativas e práticas agrícolas insustentáveis afetam a bacia hidrográfica do Rio Doce e suas áreas costeiras e marinhas adjacentes há séculos. Quando a barragem de rejeitos de Fundão se rompeu em 5 de novembro de 2015, uma onda de lama desceu o rio até chegar ao mar, causando 19 mortes, destruindo vilas e vegetação ciliar, revolvendo os sedimentos do rio e prejudicando a vida de milhares de pessoas. A resposta a um desastre desse porte é um desafio enorme que as autoridades públicas e estruturas de governança existentes não estavam preparadas para enfrentar. Ela exige grandes compromissos de longo prazo e coordenação por parte dos governos estaduais, autoridades locais, Comitê da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Doce (CBH-Doce), Poder Judiciário, Ministério Público, setor privado universidades e instituições de pesquisa e, principalmente, organizações comunitárias, juntamente com a Samarco e suas empresas acionistas.

The Rio Doce watershed and its adjacent coastal and marine areas have been affected by centuries of extractive activities and unsustainable agricultural practices. When the Fundão tailings dam collapsed on 5 November 2015, a wave of mud swept down the river to the sea, causing 19 deaths, destroying villages, riparian vegetation, scraping off river sediments and disrupting the lives of thousands of people. The response to a disaster of this magnitude is an extraordinary challenge for which the public authorities and existing structures of governance were not prepared. It requires major long-term commitments and coordination on the part of state governments, local authorities, the Rio Doce Watershed Committee, the judiciary, public prosecutors, private sector, universities and research institutions and, most of all, community organisations, along with Samarco and its shareholder companies.

As Orientações pretendem prestar apoio prático em empreendimentos de energia solar e eólica para ge-rir eficazmente os riscos e melhorar a biodiversidade e os resultados dos serviços dos ecossistemas. São fo-cadas na indústria e podem ser aplicadas ao longo de todo o ciclo de vida do desenvolvimento do projeto, desde o planeamento inicial até ao desmantelamen-to e reforço de potenciação, utilizando a hierarquia da mitigação como um quadro claro para o planea-mento e implementação

The Guidelines aim to provide practical support for solar and wind energy devel-opments to effectively manage risks and improve biodiversity and ecosystem service outcomes. They are industry-focused and can be applied across the whole project development life cycle, from early planning through to decommissioning and repow-ering, using the mitigation hierarchy as a clear framework for planning and implementation.

Este informe de síntesis proporciona una visión general de alto nivel de los principales temas abor-dados en las Directrices sobre la mitigación de los impactos de los proyectos de energía solar y eólica sobre la biodiversidad, publicadas en 2021. Las Directrices tienen por objetivo prestar apoyo práctico a los avances en materia de energía solar y eólica para gestionar eficazmente los riesgos y mejorar los resultados en materia de biodiversidad y servicios ecosistémicos. Van dirigidas a la industria y se pueden aplicar a lo largo de todo el ciclo de vida de los proyectos, desde la planificación temprana hasta el desmantelamiento y la repotenciación, utilizando la jerarquía de mitigación como un marco claro para la planificación y la implementación.

Ce rapport de synthèse fournit un aperçu de haut niveau des principaux thèmes abordés dans les Lignes directrices sur l’atténuation des impacts des projets d’énergie solaire et éolienne sur la biodiversi-té, publiées en 2021. Celles-ci visent à fournir un soutien pratique aux projets d’énergie solaire et éolienne, afin de gérer efficacement les risques et améliorer les résultats en matière de bio-diversité et de services écosystémiques. Elles sont destinées à l’industrie et peuvent être appliquées tout au long du cycle de vie du développement de projets, de la planification initiale à la mise hors ser-vice ou la remise en état, sur la base d’une hiérarchie des mesures d’atténuation fournissant un cadre clair pour la planification et la mise en œuvre.

Although all coastal development projects in Lebanon typically require an environmental impact assessment (EIA), biodiversity has rarely been given specific or appropriate consideration in the EIA process. The objective of this report is to present guidelines that specifically address biodiversity inclusion in EIA studies. For each phase of the EIA process (screening, scoping, and impact assessment), the report outlines current procedures and recommends new steps to be integrated, if/when a biodiversity-inclusive EIA is required. The report also includes a checklist to serve as a tool for the Ministry of Environment site inspections of coastal establishments. The checklist specifically addresses (direct and indirect) impacts to biodiversity, as well as relevant mitigation and monitoring practices.

In 2005, IUCN published a report entitled Geological World Heritage: A Global Framework (Dingwall et al., 2005). The aim of that report was to discuss and advise on the role of the World Heritage Convention in recognising and protecting geological and geomorphological heritage. The aim of the present report is to fully revise and update the 2005 report and to look at the potential impact of the new UNESCO Global Geopark designation on future inscriptions to the World Heritage List under criterion (viii). This aim has been achieved through a thorough review of the 2005 report, and in particular the thematic approach to geology that the report used. This has led to the proposal of a rationalised set of 11 themes to guide the application of criterion (viii). This report also examines the processes of comparative analysis and questions of site integrity in relation to properties listed for geological and geomorphological values.

Estado das Áreas Protegidas e de Conservação na África Oriental e Austral é o primeiro relatório que reúne informação sobre áreas1 protegidas e de conservação para toda a região da África Oriental e Austral. A região da África Oriental e Austral abrange 24 países desde a África do Sul no sul até ao Sudão no norte e quatro das seis nações das ilhas do Oceano Índico Ocidental. A região é culturalmente diversa e extremamente rica em biodiversidade, com uma abundância de vida selvagem espectacular, e muitas espécies endémicas de flora e fauna. Estão a ser feitos esforços consideráveis para conservar a biodiversidade da região, mas o crescimento das populações humanas, os conflitos pelo uso da terra, a exploração excessiva dos recursos, as actividades recreativas insustentáveis, a desflorestação e o comércio ilegal estão a ameaçar as áreas protegidas, as espécies e os ecossistemas.

   

État des aires protégées et de conservation d’Afrique orientale et australe est le premier rapport regroupant des informations sur les aires protégées et de conservation dans l’ensemble de la région d’Afrique de l’Est et du Sud. La région d’Afrique orientale et australe couvre 24 pays, de l’Afrique du Sud, au sud, au Soudan, au nord, ainsi que quatre des six nations insulaires de l’océan Indien occidental. La région est culturellement diverse et extrêmement riche en biodiversité, avec une abondance de vie sauvage spectaculaire et de nombreuses espèces endémiques de flore et de faune. Des efforts considérables sont déployés pour préserver la biodiversité de la région, mais des populations humaines grandissantes, des conflits liés à l’utilisation des terres, la surexploitation des ressources, des activités récréatives non durables, la déforestation et le commerce illégal menacent les aires protégées, les espèces et les écosystèmes.
