The cultural and spiritual significance of nature has been defined as the spiritual, cultural, inspirational, aesthetic, historic and social meanings, values, feelings, ideas and associations that natural features and nature in general have for past, present and future generations of people – both individuals and groups. These guidelines respond to a growing need to make conservation more inclusive, effective and socially just by accommodating multiple worldviews; by treating natural and cultural heritage as interlinked; and by suggesting ways for engaging and empowering all relevant groups and stakeholders in protected area design, governance and management. The guidelines also assist with creating common ground, resolving conflicts and implementing rights-based approaches that recognise human rights and legal pluralism.

As presentes Directrizes sobre Negócios e KBAs foram desenvolvidas pelos Parceiros das KBAs para apoiar as empresas na gestão de riscos para a biodiversidade. Serão úteis para operadores económicos e de regimes de certificação, instituições financeiras, organizações da sociedade civil e autoridades públicas. As presentes directrizes podem ser aplicadas por empresas de todas as dimensões e em todos os sectores, tanto por empresas já existentes como por novas empresas eu tenham impactos directos, indirectos e cumulativos sobre uma KBA. São aplicáveis a toda a área de influência das empresas, bem como ao longo de todo o ciclo de vida da sua operação, desde a pré-viabilidade ao encerramento. As Directrizes podem também ser integradas em políticas responsáveis de contratação de bens e serviços, cuja produção pode originar impactos directos, indirectos e cumulativos sobre as KBAs.

Known for its tasty flesh, silver therapon, locally known as ayungin, has been regarded to be one of the most valuable edible native freshwater species in the Philippines. Demands for this fish species remain high which caused the wild stock supply to decline. Due to this growing concern, a hatchery technique was devised by an AQD scientist to aid the deteriorating population of the species in the Philippine waters. This protocol, just like other technologies developed by SEAFDEC/AQD, will be for free and open to fish farmers interested to venture into ayungin culture. This manual contains the patented technique which will provide current knowledge on the biology, breeding, and seed production of ayungin. La Lista Roja de Ecosistemas (LRE) proporciona un nuevo estándar unificado de carácter global, desarrollado por la UICN (Union Internacional de Conservación de la Naturaleza), cuyo propósito es orientar procesos de evaluación de riesgo que sean comparables y compatibles, acerca del estado de todos los ecosistemas del mundo, que pueda ser aplicado de manera coherente desde el nivel global, hasta los niveles regional, nacional o local. Esta metodología permite valorar y comparar la situación de riesgo de los ecosistemas, según criterios cuantitativos estandarizados, para por ejemplo hacer seguimiento de la efectividad de cumplimiento de acuerdos o políticas, o prever los riesgos e impactos de futuros proyectos de desarrollo. Aquí presentamos una primera evaluación nacional de los ecosistemas terrestres continentales de Colombia aplicando esta metodología, con el fin de aportar a la orientación de la planificación ambiental del país.

Tipping or turning point : Scaling up climate finance in the era of COVID-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the world to a tipping point or a turning point in the fight against climate change. Decisions taken by leaders today to revive economies will either entrench our dependence on fossil fuels or put us on a path to achieve the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For the COVID-19 pandemic to prove a turning point, climate action and COVID-19 economic stimulus measures must be mutually supportive; and developing countries must be able to access long-term affordable finance to develop and implement green recovery measures.

This working paper aims to support policy makers, the financial industry and international financial institutions in these efforts by ensuring that financial decision-making takes climate change into account. Specifically, the working paper highlights the risks posed by climate change to the finance system as well the risks and opportunities related to investment in low emission, climate resilient infrastructure in developing countries. It assesses the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on access to finance in middle and low income countries for low emission, climate resilient investments; and it identifies a combination of policy, financial and institutional initiatives to scale up climate finance to enable developing countries to realize their climate ambition in the era of COVID-19.

Forskningen bedrevs ofta i nära samarbete med eller av näringarna själva, till exempel i hushållningssällskapens regi. After the 30-year long civil war was over, the Government of Sri Lanka commenced an accelerated programme to develop the Northern Province. If not carefully planned, such a programme will result in the loss of biodiversity and the consequent loss of services that ecosystems provide humans. Therefore, documenting the biodiversity found within coastal, nearshore and offshore islands of the Northern Province was identified as a need that would help both planners and conservation biologists alike. This report presents the results of a rapid biodiversity assessment of a 949 km stretch from Mannar to the Kokkilai Lagoon, including 22 coastal islands, five coastal stretches and four lagoons, extending across four districts (Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu), 20 Divisional Secretariats Divisions and 264 Grama Niladhari Divisions. For terrestrial ecosystems, assessments were carried out during November 2015 and March 2016, and for marine surveys in the coastal waters of Palk Bay and Palk Strait, during November 2015 and March 2016.
The conservation status and distribution of Mediterranean dung beetles

The Mediterranean Red List assessment is a review of the regional conservation status of approximately 6,000 species (amphibians, mammals, reptiles, birds, fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, corals and plants) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level to guide appropriate conservation actions for improving their status. This report summarises the results for Mediterranean dung beetles. All the dung beetles that are endemic or nearly endemic to the Mediterranean region – 200 species – are included. The geographical scope is the Mediterranean region according to the Mediterranean Basin Biodiversity Hotspot (Mittermeier et al., 2004), with the exception of the Macaronesian islands, which have not been included in this study. Of the 644 species of dung beetles inhabiting the Mediterranean region, 200 (32%) have at least 75% of their distribution range within the borders of the region. The other 444 species, which occur over a wider area, were excluded from this assessment. Of the 200 species analysed, 150 are considered endemic as they cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The second part presents an analysis of two case studies of ICMs from TRI country projects where the network evaluation framework was applied. Finally, the foregoing analysis is synthesised in a series of conclusions and recommendations for future work.
