O relatório traz informações e dados selecionados sobre a qualidade física, química e biológica da água e uma visão geral da biodiversidade terrestre, de água doce e marinha na bacia do Rio Doce desde o rompimento da barragem até o momento atual. Também apresenta uma revisão das abordagens integradas já adotadas nas ações de restauração do Rio Doce, com foco nos programas do Termo de Transação e de Ajustamento de Conduta, cuja concepção incorpora, em alguns aspectos, as abordagens fonte-mar e de paisagem. O Relatório aponta caminhos para a criação de uma abordagem conjunta para restaurar a qualidade da água e a biodiversidade na bacia do Rio Doce, aproveitando as ações já implementadas pela Fundação Renova e seus parceiros.

The report contextualises the current status of water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, providing selected data and information on the physical, chemical and biological quality of the water and an overview of the terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity since the dam rupture. A review of the integrated approaches already adopted in the Rio Doce restoration actions is also provided, focusing mainly on the TTAC programmes that in some respect embody the source-to-sea and landscape approaches in their conception. The Technical Report suggests pathways toward building a combined approach to restore water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, taking advantage of such actions already implemented by Renova Foundation and its partners.

En ecosistemas terrestres, dulceacuícolas y marinos, los corredores ecológicos son una designación de conservación necesaria para asegurar la salud de los ecosistemas. Los corredores son elementos fundamentales de las redes ecológicas para la conservación y complementan los objetivos de las áreas protegidas y OMEC al conectar estos hábitats con otras áreas naturales intactas. Estos lineamientos responden a la creciente demanda por la conectividad que han manifestado académicos, tomadores de decisiones y profesionales de la conservación. Los ecosistemas bien conectados apoyan una serie de funciones ecológicas, incluyendo la migración, ciclos de agua y de nutrientes, polinización, dispersión de semillas, seguridad alimentaria, resiliencia frente al clima y resistencia a enfermedades. Estos lineamientos ofrecen orientación sobre cómo conservar los valores de la conectividad en diferentes contextos de la conservación de forma consistente y medible. Los 25 estudios de caso de estos lineamientos ofrecen ejemplos y buenas prácticas que muestran algunos enfoques que pueden asegurar la conectividad ecológica entre diferentes ecosistemas y especies a diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales. Para asegurar la integración y aceleración de la adopción de las medidas de conservación de la conectividad con el fin de amortiguar y promover la adaptación al cambio climático, es necesario enfatizar las capacidades humanas y técnicas.

   

The passing of the IUCN Resolution 041 (Development of objective criteria for a Green List of species, ecosystems and protected areas) at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju Island, South Korea in September 2012 provided an important indication of government and NGO support for the principle of the Green Status of Species. However, there was no indication of what the GSS method would look like. Since then, those details have been worked out by technical specialists. The objective of the survey was to gather opinions and input from a wide range of potential users of the GSS. Results will be used in further development of the GSS methodology and, probably more importantly, in deciding when and how it will be applied.

   

This Guidance for using the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions accompanies the Global Standard to provide the scientific basis and guidance for users.

These guidelines offer an approach for developing a corporate-level biodiversity strategic plan, including measurable goals and objectives and a set of core linked  indicators, that will allow companies to measure their biodiversity performance across their operations. The Guidelines can be used by any company in any sector that has impacts and dependencies on biodiversity, whether large or small, national or multinational. They are aimed at sustainability teams, managers and other company staff whose roles include strategic planning and reporting related to biodiversity. The focus is on a full-cycle, results-based management approach (not just risk analyses, goal setting or indicator development), since assessing pressures on biodiversity, and planning and developing measurable goals, are key prerequisites for monitoring. They also explain how, by choosing and using appropriate core indicators and building internal capacity and partnerships, companies can aggregate and use biodiversity data at the corporate level in a meaningful way.

This seventh edition provides 69 case studies with some 78 species covering plants, mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, invertebrates and reptiles. The projects are ranked as Highly Successful, Successful, Partially Successful and Failure.

The Western Indian Ocean is comprised of productive and highly diverse marine ecosystems that are rich sources of food security, livelihoods, and natural wonder. The ecological services that species provide are vital to the productivity of these ecosystems and healthy biodiversity is essential for the continued support of economies and local users. The stability of these valuable resources, however, is being eroded by growing threats to marine life from overexploitation, habitat degradation and climate change, all of which are causing serious reductions in marine ecosystem services and the ability of these ecosystems to support human communities. Quantifying the impacts of these threats and understanding the conservation status of the region’s marine biodiversity is a critical step in applying informed management and conservation measures to mitigate loss and retain the ecological value of these systems. This report highlights trends in research needs for species in the region, including priorities for fundamental biological and ecological research and quantifying trends in the populations of species. The assessments and analyses submitted in this report should inform conservation decision-making processes and will be valuable to policymakers, natural resource managers, environmental planners and NGOs.

In most places around the world, people are an integral, sometimes dominant, part of the environment. This has two implications. First, a key requirement for sustainability success lies in finding ways to meet the dual goals of conserving nature and providing for the well-being and quality of life of people. Second, while conservation and stewardship certainly require considering the problems created by human impacts, they can also draw on the considerable potential of humans to solve a range of environmental challenges. Global sustainability requires corresponding responses at a global level. Equally, there is a need for bottom-up change. This book explores how local communities around the world are successfully responding to threats to the environment and local livelihoods. As communities continue to make a difference at the forefront of conservation, it is an auspicious moment to explore the links of community environmental stewardship, sustainable livelihoods and government engagement, and to appreciate the ‘power of community’.

Achieving a climate-resilient future requires rapid, sustained and far-reaching transformations in energy, land-use, infrastructure and industrial systems. Large-scale expansion of renewable energy can play a critical role in meeting the world’s growing energy demands and in the fight against climate change. However, even ‘clean’ energy sources can have significant unintended impacts on the environment. The guidelines aim to provide practical support for solar and wind energy developments by effectively managing risks and improving overall outcomes related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They are industry-focused and can be applied across the whole project development life cycle, from early planning through to decommissioning and repowering, using the mitigation hierarchy as a clear framework for planning and implementation. The mitigation hierarchy is applied to direct, indirect and cumulative impacts. The catalogue of resources relevant to mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with solar and wind energy development (Annex 1 of the publication) is available as a separate, downloadable, spreadsheet.
