This book argues that existing practises of plant conservation are inadequate and firmly supports the placement of ecological restoration at the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation. The author unifies different aspects of conservation into one coherent concept, including natural area protection, ex situ conservation and in situ interventions through either population management or ecological restoration. Assisted colonization, experimentation, and utilization of threatened plant species are raised as crucial elements in restoration, with partly novel ecosystems being among its major target areas. Covering a wide spectrum of plant conservation examples, and offering practical methodologies alongside the theoretical context, this is a vital resource for students, research scientists and practitioners in conservation biology and restoration ecology.

   

REDD+ is vital for global efforts to combat climate change. The UNFCCC specifically recognized the GCF as a key funding avenue for channeling REDD+ RBPs. The GCF began offering such payments in 2017, and funding activities that are necessary to achieve REDD+ results since it started to approve funding proposals in 2015. This working paper has been prepared as part of the ongoing development of GCF’s sectoral guidance on forest and land use result area, which, among other strategic interventions, identifies the need to increase support for countries in implementing REDD+ and achieving results.

Since the mid-2000s, the mining sector has been driving Mongolia's exports. However, while in recent years economic growth has been slowing down, the increased number of mining operations profoundly affects Mongolia's economic policies, social dynamics and environment. The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum-Asia) together with its member organisation, Centre for Human Rights and Development (CHRD), conducted a fact-finding mission in the northeastern part of Mongolia from 5 to 10 May 2019. The mission aimed to look into the impact of mining operations on the situation of human rights defenders, women human rights defenders, environment, and local communities. Specifically, it aimed to document unreported cases of violations against defenders working on mining and environmental issues, addressing these cases to State and relevant non-State actors to pressure perpetrators to stop violations.

IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands (IUCN NL) commissioned this assessment of wildlife poaching and trafficking in the Amazon in order to enhance understanding of the issue and inform potential future engagement. Bolivia and Suriname were selected as focal countries both because they were deemed to be representative of the wider region and in light of several years of incountry engagement on the part of IUCN NL. The project aimed to compile and analyse information on wildlife poaching and trafficking in Bolivia and Suriname, including the key species targeted, the trafficking routes and main destinations, and key drivers. The legal wildlife trade was reviewed to provide clues toward understanding the illegal trade. An attempt was also made to assess the impact of infrastructure development and natural resource extraction by foreign entities on the occurrence of wildlife crime.

Mangroves cut across ecosystems, sectors, jurisdictions and governance regimes. While few countries have a specific mangrove law, many national and international regimes apply to or affect mangroves in some way. Despite the plethora of applicable laws, mangroves continue to deteriorate rapidly, driven by urbanization, population growth and unsustainable development. This assessment explores the many legal and governance approaches and enabling conditions relating to mangroves in an attempt to understand what works and under what conditions, and to provide recommendations on how to improve governance for mangrove protection and sustainable use. It begins with an assessment of international and national legal and policy instruments, and proceeds to examine how these instruments are implemented and with what results. Seven case studies illustrate how mangrove governance plays out in practice.

   

Настоящее Информационное руководство разработано с конкретной целью: способствовать управлению природными ценностями объектов всемирного наследия. À mesure que la biologie de synthèse évolue, de nouveaux outils émergent, de nouvelles applications sont proposées et la recherche fondamentale est appliquée. Cette évaluation fait partie des efforts de l’UICN visant à formuler des recommandations et des lignes directrices concernant les impacts positifs et négatifs potentiels de la biologie de synthèse sur la conservation de la biodiversité.

L’océan représente 97% de l’espace physique habitable de la planète et joue un rôle central dans le maintien de la vie sur Terre. Depuis les années 2000 que des efforts considérables et spécifiques ont été déployés pour mieux faire connaître et comprendre les conséquences des émissions de gaz à effet de serre sur les océans. Le dioxyde de carbone émis par les activités humaines conduit les océans vers des conditions plus acides, phénomène connu sous le nom d’acidification des océans. Ce n’est qu’au cours de la dernière décennie que l’on a commencé à reconnaître de que la température mondiale des océans est également affectée de manière significative par les effets que le dioxyde de carbone et autres gaz à effet de serre puissants ont sur l’atmosphère terrestre. Le réchauffement et l’acidification progressive de l’eau de mer sont loin d’être les seules conséquences mondiales majeures des émissions de gaz à effet de serre pour le domaine marin. On sait depuis quelques décennies que le ruissellement de nutriments provenant de l’agriculture entraîne la formation de zones dépourvues d’oxygène dans la mer, là où l’oxygène vital est consommé dans la colonne d’eau et sur les fonds marins. Mais les causes et l’ampleur réelle des impacts de ce phénomène appelé « désoxygénation des océans » étaient jusqu’alors inconnues. Ce résumé et le rapport technique complet qui l’accompagne montrent de manière indéniable que les activités humaines extraient aujourd’hui l’oxygène vital des océans.
