The ocean represents 97% of the physical habitable space on the planet and is central to sustaining all life on Earth. Since 2000 significant and dedicated effort has been directed at raising awareness and understanding of the consequences of greenhouse gas emissions on the ocean. Carbon dioxide emitted by human activities is driving the ocean towards more acidic conditions. Only in the past decade has it started to become more widely recognized that the temperature of the global ocean is also being significantly affected as a result of the effect that the carbon dioxide and other potent greenhouse gases are having in the Earth’s atmosphere. The heating of seawater and progressive acidification are not the only major global consequences of greenhouse gases emissions in the marine realm. It has been known for some decades that nutrient run-off from agriculture causes oxygen-depleted zones to form in the sea, as life-giving oxygen is used up in the water column and on the sea floor. This phenomenon is called ‘ocean deoxygenation’. This summary for policy makers and the comprehensive technical report tell the scale and nature of the changes being driven by ocean deoxygenation.

The development of this second edition of these guidelines was in part a response to evidence of the widespread incorrect application of the categories to marine protected areas (MPAs). Marine management and sustainable fisheries management are critical elements of good oceans management, but are not the same as protected areas management, where the primary focus is conservation of nature. The primary purpose of these supplementary guidelines is to increase the accuracy and consistency of assignment and reporting of the IUCN categories when applied to marine and coastal protected areas. These supplementary marine guidelines are aimed at ensuring that the IUCN categories can be effectively applied to all types of MPAs as well as to any marine components of adjoining terrestrial protected areas, provided a site meets the IUCN definition of a protected area.

In November 2018, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted at the 14th Conference of the Parties a definition of an "other effective area-based conservation measure" (OECM) as well as guiding principles, common characteristics and criteria for identification of OECMs (CBD/COP/DEC/14/8). OECMs may be managed for many different objectives but they must deliver effective conservation. They may be managed with conservation as a primary or secondary objective or long-term conservation may simply be the ancillary result of management activities. OECMs can contribute to ecologically representative and well-connected conservation systems, integrated within wider landscapes and seascapes, and in doing so, generate a range of positive conservation outcomes. The WCPA Task Force on OECMs has produced these guidelines to assist Parties in interpreting and operationalising Decision 14/8 and to start to develop a body of good practice around recognising and reporting OECMs. It is designed for application at various scales, ranging from understanding whether an individual area is an OECM to reporting OECM statistics at the national and global level as a means to assess progress on achieving conservation targets.

This capacity needs assessment identifies opportunities for institutional capacity development to strengthen multi-sectoral planning and implementation in order to create an enabling environment for nexus perspectives in Central Asia. It should not be viewed as a static capacity building plan, but rather as a catalogue to develop appropriate activities and strategies that can be further adjusted if necessary.

This institutional analysis looks at existing institutional arragements, provides insights into barriers and opportunities of the practical application of the water-energy-food security nexus in Central Asia and considers options for improved multi-sectoral dialogue and cooperation.

This independent technical review assesses the "Strategic environmental assessment report for the proposed Rufiji hydropower project", dated April 2019, that relates to the planned Rufiji River Hydropower Project (RRHP). The RRHP comprises a 130m high dam on the Rufiji river at Stiegler's Gorge, creation of a 100km long, c.914km squared reservoir plus power plant, a transmission line, workers camps and access roads, all of which will be within the Selous Game Reserve, a natural World Heritage site. This review follows a similar format to, and builds upon, the independent technical review of the Project EIA commissioned in April 2019 by IUCN.

The Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa Catchment (LMNNC) supports exceptionally high diversity and endemism of freshwater species. This globally recognised centre of freshwater biodiversity is of extreme importance, not only for its biodiversity value but also for our understanding of evolutionary processes and species sorting. Additionally, it provides a resource that underpins the livelihoods of many people in each of the riparian countries of Malawai,  Mozambique and Tanzania, and is important to national economies and human wellbeing. As such, sustainable development for these three countries requires focussed management of the freshwater ecosystems within the LMNNC,
which are currently at risk due to a number of pressures, such as over abstraction of natural resources by a growing human population. This study presents the findings of an assessment of the distribution and status of all described species of freshwater decapods, fishes, molluscs and odonates, and selected aquatic plants native to the catchment and evaluate change since the first baseline assessment by Darwall et al. (2011). The outputs presented here provide valuable input to guide future sustainable development of the LMNNC whilst helping to safeguard this unique biodiversity upon which so many depend.

During the 1960s and 1970s, rapidly growing environmental awareness and concern created unprecedented demand for ecological expertise and novel challenges for ecological advocacy groups such as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This book reveals how, despite their vast scientific knowledge and their attempts to incorporate socially relevant themes, IUCN experts inevitably struggled to make global schemes for nature conservation a central concern for UNESCO, UNEP, and other intergovernmental organizations.

This guide provides an overview of the unique roles and contributions women make in the wild-caught fisheries sector. The guide also explains how persistent gender inequalities limit women’s economic empowerment, and increased risks of gender-based violence negatively impact the potential of women to thrive and contribute towards strong economies. Gender in Fisheries - A Sea of Opportunities summarizes research on the intersection of gender and wild-caught fisheries, exploring the ways in which fisheries offer important entry points to enhance gender equality and women’s economic empowerment while also contributing to more effective interventions and more sustainable outcomes. This guide will be an important resource, particularly for USAID missions and implementing partners working in sustainable fisheries management. Development practitioners can use the guide to access the latest evidence on gender empowerment and sustainable fisheries management; find tools and resources to conduct gender analyses; design strategic interventions to strengthen program design and implementation through the development of comprehensive gender action plans; and learn more about how to develop results chains to help programs define goals and refine assumptions.

Timely action to prevent, reduce and reverse land degradation can improve food and water security, contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, and avoid conflicts and migration. In this regard, the initiative for land degradation neutrality promoted by the UNCCD should be highlighted. It is also worth noting the efforts of regional players committed to this struggle – ministries, economic sectors and NGOs to institutionalize the fight against land degradation, recover pre-Hispanic technologies and promote sustainable management.
