This sixth edition of the Global Reintroduction Perspectives provides 59 case studies covering invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and plants. We hope the information presented in this book will provide a broad global perspective on challenges facing reintroduction projects trying to restore biodiversity.

The material within these proceedings represents a summary for 2009–2016 on the state of knowledge and conservation concerns for polar bears throughout their range. The difficulties in studying a species that ranges widely, at low densities, and in one of the world’s most remote and environmentally challenging regions is evident in these proceedings. This report describes the current and future challenges and the conservation efforts needed to ensure the survival of polar bears.

In 2013, the IUCN Niger Delta Panel published the report Sustainable remediation and rehabilitation of biodiversity and habitats of oil spill sites in the Niger Delta. In this report, it was recognised that the critical step in the sustainable rehabilitation of biodiversity and habitats of oil spill sites in the Niger Delta is the prevention and/or quick and efficient clean-up of the oil spill in the first place. In respect to biodiversity itself, the 2013 report recommended follow-up analyses. This new report, Developing a biodiversity conservation strategy for the Niger Delta: Integrating biodiversity considerations into SPDC’s operation, presents the findings and recommendations arising from one of these analyses, which reviewed the biodiversity value of the Niger Delta, the main threats from oil spills, and various attempts to develop a wider biodiversity strategy for the region. The Panel also examined SPDC’s internal processes and procedures for biodiversity management.

These Guidelines on business and KBAs have been developed by the KBA Partners to support businesses in managing risk to biodiversity. They will be of use to business and certification scheme operators, financial institutions, civil society organisations, and public authorities. They are applicable to the businesses’ entire area of influence, as well as throughout the life cycle of the operation, from pre-feasibility to closure (and, where relevant, site rehabilitation). The Guidelines can also be integrated into responsible sourcing policies for goods and services, the production of which could have direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts on KBAs.

The newsletter, which is published twice a year, provides up to date information on activities, events and initiatives on the EU’s biodiversity policy and the implementation of the Habitats and Birds Directives.

The primary objective of this assessment is to determine the value for money (VfM) of IUCN's contribution to Guatemala’s forest landscape restoration (FLR) policy formulation processes during the period 2012-2016. The process and findings described in this VfM assessment are intended to stimulate discussion within IUCN and beyond on how to systematically reflect on experiences and capture lessons about what works in delivering value, and share that learning about value delivery to influence policy, investment, decisions and actions.

The Lake Victoria Basin is internationally recognised for its high freshwater species diversity and endemism, which are of critical importance to local livelihoods and national economies within the basin. However, freshwater ecosystems within the region are highly threatened, with current safeguards proving inadequate and the focus of much past and ongoing conservation work in the region focussing on terrestrial ecosystems. Systematic conservation planning analysis was used to identify a critical sites network for freshwater biodiversity in the Lake Victoria Basin, based on the existing protected area, KBA (including the newly delineated freshwater KBAs) and Ramsar site network. These Guidelines provide new and updated information and insights that will motivate actions to help safeguard the high diversity of life within freshwaters of the Lake Victoria Basin.

The Building River Dialogue and Governance Programme (BRIDGE, currently in phase 3) set out to do something quite new: to facilitate the development of international networks of Champions of water governance in its target basins. Selected individuals who were already active in water or environmental resources stewardship were invited to build skills around transboundary cooperation in a collective process at basin or regional scale, in order to help realise new visions for the governance of shared water resources. This thematic case study reviews the diverse experience of the ‘Champions’ component’ of BRIDGE in Mesoamerica, South America, in the Lower Mekong region and in the Lake Chad Basin, to examine the factors of success and draw lessons for future initiatives that may choose to rely on change makers to effect transformative change.

Sport can have significant negative impacts on biodiversity, through the construction and use of sports venues and the staging of sporting events. Understanding and managing the potential negative impacts and opportunities for conservation is vital for ensuring that sports venues and sporting events deliver successfully both from the financial and operational standpoint. This guide is designed to help decision makers understand these potential impacts, and to present options for mitigating them, as well as for maximising opportunities to use sport as a way to promote and enhance biodiversity conservation.

For the last 20 years there has been a growing interest in the geosciences for topics related to geoheritage: geoconservation, geotourism and geoparks. Geoheritage: Assessment, Protection, and Management is the first and only reference book to cover these main topics as well as the relationship of geoheritage to other subjects such as landscapes, conservation, and tourism. The book also includes methodologies for assessment, mapping, and visualisation, along with case studies and colour images of some of the most important global geosites.

In this report, Environmental Defense Fund and Forest Trends map the landscape of the available sources of funding for climate action in forests, with a focus on REDD+, through 2017. To provide a comprehensive overview of the different sources of REDD+ finance, the report first defines the three phases of REDD+, and then provides a summary of the various finance sources, types, and mechanisms. The report then describes the sources of finance available for each phase of REDD+, including the funding type, the amount initially provided and the amount remaining, the funding mechanism used for resource distribution, eligibility criteria, scale, access parameters, scope of each funding source, and notable challenges with accessing funds from each source. Next, the report highlights salient challenges with and opportunities for 7 Executive summary accessing and coordinating finance for REDD+ specifically, and climate action in forests more broadly. Lastly, to provide a visual representation of the landscape of funding sources for REDD+ and climate action in forests, the report includes an infographic in Annex 1 that shows the sources of finance and funding mechanisms that correspond to each REDD+ phase.

The inland waters of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands hotspot support a high diversity of aquatic species with high levels of endemism. The information presented in this report will help support implementation of multilateral Environmental Agreements in Madagascar, such as the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity, guiding conservation planning and priority setting at national level. In addition, this new information will help efforts to achieve targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Saproxylic beetles are insects that depend on dead and decaying wood for at least part of their lifecycle, and play important ecological roles in European habitats. The current IUCN European Red List provides an assessment for 693 species of saproxylic beetles. In 2008, following a two-year project, a total of 436 species were assessed. In 2017, an additional 257 species were assessed.
