The impact of IUCN resolutions on international conservation efforts : an overview
   

This paper briefly highlights some of the major impacts and influences that IUCN Resolutions have had on conservation. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to focus attention on some of the most significant issues that the IUCN Membership has addressed, working together with IUCN’s six Commissions (on Species, Protected Areas, Environmental Law, Ecosystem Management, Communications and Education, and Environmental, Economic and Social Policy) and supported by IUCN’s Secretariat.

Building on the insight that community “voice” is a critical determinant of a policy regime that supports their effective engagement, the report further reviews the opportunities for indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) to participate in key relevant international deliberations and decision-making arenas, and the barriers they face.

This report provides, for the first time, a comprehensive global-scale assessment of the benefits, risks, and trade-offs of energy efficiency technologies and their combined effects when deployed alongside low-carbon electricity supply technologies. The results of the report show that the majority of efficiency technologies, used for mobility, buildings and industry, bring environmental co-benefits beyond greenhouse gas mitigation, including reduced impacts on the environment, health and natural resources. However, some technologies may generate higher impacts than the baseline technology for certain regions and for certain years. The analysis also sheds light on the interactions between supply-side and demand-side low-carbon technologies since without decarbonizing electricity supply, the benefits of some energy efficiency technologies cannot be realized.
