The Bellinger River Snapping Turtle (BRST) (Myuchelys georgesi) is a freshwater turtle endemic to a 60 km stretch of the Bellinger River, and possibly a portion of the nearby Kalang River in coastal north eastern New South Wales (NSW). In mid-February, 2015 a significant mortality event was observed in BRSTs. Prior to the 2015 mortality event, the BRST was described as locally abundant, but now the BRST population is currently listed as Critically Endangered. Since the mortality event a disease investigation has identified a virus as the agent most likely to be responsible for the mortality event. In November 2016, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage brought 16 experts from eight organisations to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, to discuss and recommend next steps in the recovery of BRSTs, based on their agreed interpretation of the information gathered to date.

The meeting brought together 20 international heritage experts on climate change from 15 countries with the aim of discussing the update of the Policy Document on the Impacts of Climate Change on World Heritage Properties, adopted by the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention in 2007. The expert group was tasked to discuss the implementation to date of the 2007 policy document, the potential contents of an updated policy and to provide inputs to the further process. The recommendations of the expert group will feed into the process of updating the policy document, as requested by the World Heritage Committee in 2016 and 2017 (Decision 40 COM 7 and 41 COM 7).

The Arctic is an increasingly important region faced with major challenges caused not only by the effects of climate change, but also by a growing interest in its living and non-living resources, its attraction as a new destination for tourism, and as a route for navigation. It is not only the eight Arctic States that have paid an increased level of attention to the region; several non-Arctic actors from Asia and Europe also seek to gain more influence in the High North. At the same time, the evolving law and policy architecture for the Arctic region has recently played a more prominent role in the political and academic debate. Unlike Antarctica, where the coherent Antarctic Treaty System governs international cooperation, the legal regime of Arctic affairs is based on public international law, domestic law, and 'soft law'. These three pillars intersect and interact making Arctic governance multi-faceted and highly complex.

This book provides an analytical introduction, a chronology of legally relevant events, and a selection of essential materials covering a wide range of issues-eg delineation and delimitation of maritime boundaries, environmental protection, indigenous peoples' rights, shipping, and fisheries. Included are multilateral and bilateral treaties, UN documents, official statements, informal instruments, domestic laws, and diplomatic correspondence.

Anna's Forest focuses on the need to protect life on land (SDG #15). After Anna’s father finds out that he is facing some serious health concerns, enhanced by the pollution in the city, she and her family temporarily move to the countryside. Initially, Anna and her younger brother are uneasy about leaving their life in the city, but with time they come to experience a special connection with nature. When they leave the countryside, Anna feels ready to support conservation in her neighborhood and beyond! After arriving at home, she and her brother decide to create a forest right in the city, bringing nature with them wherever they go and inspiring others to make a change. The comic explores the dire effects of pollution, the consequences deforestation, forest conservation and biodiversity, and more importantly, our love for nature!

This document is a practical guide to the responsible and effective planning of offshore geophysical surveys and other forms of environmental imaging. It will be useful for both understanding the impacts of imaging surveys on managed resources and planning future activities. To increase consistency in both the evaluation and mitigation of potential effects, the process described in this document involves a systematic evaluation of activities and potential impacts, recognizing that these may impinge on multiple regulatory jurisdictions. The focus is on marine mammals; nonetheless the elements of this planning tool are applicable and adaptable for application where the focus is on any locally important species, e.g., fishes, sea turtles, seabirds.

The Guidelines aim to be equally relevant for any taxon on Earth. Recent experience has shown that no two planning situations are the same. So while the principles of planning may be constant, the purpose of the planning and the circumstances, the information available and its accuracy, and other factors, all combine to make every situation unique. This then demands a planning process that is both rigorous in analysis but flexible in its application. These Guidelines are very much an evolution based on experience, rather than a fundamental replacement of the 2008 Handbook (Strategic Planning for Species: A Handbook).

The Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot is known to be one of the most biologically rich and complex regions on Earth. The north-western part of the hotspot (the area that covers all of the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, most of Italy and Malta) supports important river, lake, karst and wetland systems critical for the survival of threatened and restricted range freshwater species. Within the north-western Mediterranean region of the hotspot, freshwater Key Biodiversity Areas (i.e., sites of importance for the global persistence of biodiversity) have been identified. The purpose of this report is to help guide and inform policies and conservation actions for freshwater biodiversity in the region.

Vultures are a characteristic, distinctive and spectacular component of the biodiversity of the environments they inhabit. They also provide critically important ecosystem services by cleaning up carcasses and other organic waste in the environment. The IUCN Red List status of African-Eurasian vultures has seen drastic changes for the worse in recent years. The Multi-species Action Plan to Conserve African-Eurasian Vultures (Vulture MsAP) is the result of extensive consultation with stakeholders, conservation and species experts, aims to rapidly halt current population declines in all the 15 African-Eurasian vulture species. This includes bringing the conservation status of each species back to a favourable level and providing conservation management guidelines applicable to all Range States.

The Adriatic Marbled Bush-Cricket, Zeuneriana marmorata, is a rare bush-cricket species, which is found in a few wetlands in north-eastern Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Slovenia. For several decades, Z. marmorata was presumed to be extinct, until it was rediscovered. Considering the history of land use and periodically high groundwater level, it is likely that Z. marmorata was formerly more widespread in the Ljubljana marsh. Currently, it is confined to a small area of extensively used sedge meadows, between Ig and Škofljica. If the wet meadows of the Ljubljana marsh are not immediately preserved from conservation into cornfields or intensive grassland management, the Adriatic Marbled Bush-Cricket will disappear from the area. Therefore, a conservation strategy for the species has been developed in cooperation with the major stakeholders.

Currently, it is confined to three small areas of coastal reed beds: Lisert (Monfalcone), the mouth of Isonzo river and the Marano Lagoon. If the remaining habitats in Italy are not immediately preserved, the Adriatic Marbled Bush-Cricket will probably disappear from the area. Therefore, a conservation strategy for the species has been developed in cooperation with the major stakeholders.

The Bonn Challenge, launched in September 2011 and extended by the 2014 New York Declaration on Forests, is an enormous opportunity to improve environmental and social outcomes globally, nationally and sub-nationally. To capture and provide evidence of advances, partnership opportunities, needs and bottlenecks, IUCN initiated the development of the Bonn Challenge Barometer. The results of the application of the Barometer tool will be captured in a series of reports, beginning with the 2017 Spotlight Report (and will be profiled on www.InfoFLR.org). This report describes the process for the development of the Bonn Challenge Barometer and the underlying concepts and initiatives. It includes five case studies of progress on FLR, in Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico (Quintana Roo), Rwanda and the United States.

The 2016–2018 list of the world’s 25 most endangered primates has five species from Africa, six from Madagascar, nine from Asia, and five from the Neotropics.

Charcoal is widely used for cooking and heating in developing countries. The consumption of charcoal has been at high level and the demand may keep growing over the next decades, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall objective of the publication is to provide data and information to allow for informed decision-making on the contribution sustainable charcoal production and consumption can make to climate change mitigation. More specifically, the publication aims to answer the following questions: - What are the climate change impacts of the current practices on charcoal production and consumption worldwide and across regions? - What is the potential of sustainable charcoal production in GHG emission reductions and how such potential can be achieved? - What are the key barriers to sustainable charcoal production and what actions are required to develop a climate-smart charcoal sector?
