In 2015, the Canadian Parks Council (CPC) formed a citizen working group to develop an action guide to connect Canadians with Nature. One year later, The Nature Playbook was launched to great acclaim. The #NatureForAll Playbook has been developed in partnership with the CPC, with input from many other #NatureForAll partners. Using the CPC’s The Nature Playbook as a base, it incorporates much of the language and many of the same ideas and examples. It is augmented and expanded with ideas and examples received through international workshops held during the 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress and the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress as well as the outcomes of the 2015 Paul-F Brandwein Institute’s North American Summit: Inspiring a New Generation, and through ongoing collaboration among some 150 #NatureForAll partners worldwide. The #NatureForAll Playbook offers suggestions and possibilities, but also emphasizes the importance of knowing yourself or your organization, and connecting on your own terms—inspiring the love and support for Nature that will lead to increased action for its conservation now and into the future.

The objective of the Our Common Dignity initiative has been to contribute towards building awareness of rights issues in World Heritage and heritage management, to promote ‘good practice’ approaches to rights and their enabling conditions, and to develop and recommend relevant tools and guidelines in World Heritage, from tentative list nomination through to management. This document summarizes some of the independent case studies initiated by ICOMOS Norway and its partners. The purpose of presenting these case studies now is to illustrate rights issues being discussed in various geo-cultural regions.

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are areas contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. KBAs need to be managed to ensure environmental flows are sufficient to support these fragile freshwater ecosystems. The information and data provided in this report will help guide conservation actions and management, development of policies and make informed decisions regarding development activities that may impact freshwater ecosystems in Canada

Natural World Heritage sites are internationally recognised as having the highest global nature conservation priority. As of November 2017, there are 241 natural and mixed (both cultural and natural) World Heritage sites, representing about 0.1% of the total number of protected areas globally, but yet with a total coverage of 294 million hectares, accounting for 8% of the combined surface of terrestrial and 6% of marine protected areas. Monitoring World Heritage sites is an extremely important barometer of the effectiveness of the global community’s overall conservation effort. The IUCN World Heritage Outlook system is both forward-looking and proactive. It helps determine where natural World Heritage sites and the critical values they protect are heading, how we can anticipate their future needs, and how we can optimise their contribution to human well-being. It also seeks to celebrate and amplify success, supporting the role of World Heritage sites in demonstrating excellence.

The aim of this study is to provide an overview of national legal instruments in all European Union Member States related to protection of the marine environment from plastic pollution, and to support upcoming European policy efforts such as the EU Strategy on Plastics, but also other future efforts to tackle this global environmental challenge. However, it is important to note that this report does not claim to give a comprehensive overview of all EU Member States’ existing national policies related to marine litter. The report is based on information collected during first half of 2017 from EU Member States on existing policies directly tackling marine litter at national level.

With 48 threatened bird species, and the highest number of breeding endemic bird species (11) in mainland Southeast Asia, Viet Nam is a global conservation priority. Many of these threatened species are hunted unsustainably for wildlife trade. Very little is known about the current true scale of the trade in Viet Nam as the most recent research was conducted in 2008. To fill this knowledge gap, and to support bird conservation efforts in the region, TRAFFIC undertook a full inventory of the bird markets across the country’s two main cities—Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

The 1st Asia Bonn Challenge High-Level Roundtable was held on the 9th and 10th of May 2017 in Palembang, South Sumatra. The event was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Provincial Government of South Sumatra, with the support of IUCN. The 1st Asia Roundtable sought to raise the ambition for FLR in the region, as a key approach for enhancing the wellbeing of both people and nature.

The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions cooperate to protect human health and the environment from the negative effects of hazardous pollutants. This Environment and Gender Information (EGI) platform analysis explores how women are represented as delegates to the Conferences of the Parties (COPs), members and observers of Conventions’ Subsidiary Bodies, and national focal points. It investigates how gender equality considerations are included in Parties’ reporting mechanisms to the BRS Conventions, including initial National Implementation Plans (NIPs) to the Stockholm Convention and the most recent National Reports to the Basel and Stockholm Conventions. This study also explores how gender considerations are included in the Rotterdam Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Circular.

Despite increasing recognition of the importance of ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, implementation remains mostly underdeveloped worldwide. Lack of knowledge on the implementation process present an important barrier. This publication presents details on Ecosystems Protecting Infrastructure and Communities (EPIC), a global initiative which promoted ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in six countries. The publication provides a detailed description of the project’s operational approach and draws lessons from the case studies to inform and guide best practices for actions on the ground.
