Guidelines for tourism partnerships and concessions for protected areas: generating sustainable revenues for conservation and development

Many Parties to the CBD underutilise tourism as a means to contribute towards the financial sustainability of protected areas. The development of the present guidelines on tourism partnerships and concessions for protected areas is a response to this under-utilized potential and to recent decisions of the CBD on tourism.
What matters : investing in results to build strong, vibrant communities
   

Many organizations do amazing work and provide essential services that make an important, positive impact on the people they serve. But we live in a system oriented around activities and outputs, and this output orientation forces too many to spend too much time and effort complying with red tape, leaving no flexibility to innovate. Fortunately, we can do better. Orienting programs and funding around outcomes fundamentally changes this dynamic. In an outcomes-oriented system, service providers and funders partner to effect lasting outcomes they both seek. But, to realize the potential of this new approach, we need to be clear about how this contrasts with business-as-usual and focus on the hard work ahead. Reorienting our system around outcomes and results requires a new social contract between those who deliver social services and those who pay for them. In communities across the country, everyday people in government agencies, community-based service organizations, and charitable foundations are already showing how orienting around outcomes and results is practical and powerful. They are making the extraordinary routine. The chapters in this book capture some of their experiences.

Ivory markets in Central Africa

Central Africa has been identified as one of the main sources of illegal ivory fueling unregulated domestic ivory trade throughout West and Central Africa and overseas destinations, especially Asia, in recent years. This report presents the results of field surveys of ivory markets carried out in 11 cities of five Central African countries in 2007, 2009, 2014 and 2015 by two different researchers, one in 2007 and 2009, and another in 2014 and 2015, using the same methodology. The aim was to assess the status and trends of domestic ivory trade in the region following the last substantial study in Central Africa, undertaken by Martin and Stiles in 1999, which established a baseline in key markets from which future changes could be assessed (Martin & Stiles, 2000).

Although focused on aiding managers, these Guidelines are for anyone involved in supporting LSMPAs or the communities that hold an interest in them. It is hoped these Guidelines will also assist new LSMPAs from the earliest design phase, and enhance the management of existing LSMPAs from planning and implementation through ongoing evaluation. Ultimately, the goal is to increase the effectiveness of LSMPAs so that they contribute to global conservation targets in ways that truly benefit humanity.

In recent years, awareness has risen surrounding the crucial role of plants in providing ecosystem services and on their decline – they are one of the essential foundations of healthy ecosystems that we depend on. However, significant gaps in knowledge still remain. In this context, the European Red List of lycopods and ferns provides the first ever comprehensive assessment of the extinction risk of all native lycopod and fern species to Europe. With 194 species assessed, this assessment highlights that 19.9% of lycopod and fern species are threatened with extinction in Europe. This is mainly due to urban and infrastructure development, human intrusions and disturbance, pollution, and water use and management.

Como nossas cidades continuam crescendo, não devemos abandonar a proteção de áreas naturais às pressões da urbanização, e sim defender esses lugares, e realmente tentar criar novos espaços para a natureza dentro do tecido urbano – inclusive dentro dos centros das cidades. Também precisamos tornar a natureza mais acessível às pessoas, fornecendo interpretação e educação, sempre que possível. Conectar as pessoas à natureza deve ser um imperativo para todo o movimento de conservação, e as áreas protegidas urbanas estão bem situadas para fazer isso.

Leaders in action : achieving forest landscape restoration through online learning
   

Forest landscape restoration (FLR) provides an opportunity to transform degraded lands into productive landscapes that yield numerous ecological, economic, and social benefits. Many countries have made large-scale commitments under the Bonn Challenge, but with such large targets, it is challenging to determine where to begin – and how to approach – the restoration process. From May 2016 to March 2017, the Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and IUCN conducted a series of six online courses, entitled “Forest Landscape Restoration in the Tropics.” ELTI and IUCN offered these courses in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French to 125 environmental practitioners from over 30 countries. The objectives of this collaboration were to develop the capacity of diverse practitioners working on FLR in tropical developing countries, support future leaders of FLR and ROAM initiatives, and accelerate action on FLR and ROAM to meet countries’ pledges to the Bonn Challenge. This booklet includes a collection of inspirational stories from alumni of the ELTI-IUCN online courses that illustrate the diverse ways in which they have made profound and positive impacts that they attribute to their participation in these courses.

El presente documento se focaliza en el estudio de estas áreas protegidas para describir las condiciones de cada uno de los paisajes, enfatizando en los costos, beneficios económicos y los impactos sociales y culturales que representan para las poblaciones locales. En cada caso, la participación de los gestores de las áreas protegidas que son parte de este estudio fue fundamental para comprender cuáles son los esfuerzos institucionales por compaginar conservación y desarrollo local. Además, el involucramiento de las poblacio-nes locales dotó de información sobre qué es el territorio, su aprovechamiento, limitaciones y ventajas al ser parte de lo cotarget_idiano en el área protegida.
The conservation status of sharks, rays, and chimaeras in the Arabian Sea and adjacent waters

This report provides an overview of the conservation status of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays, and chimaeras) in the Arabian Seas Region (ASR) and describes the results of a regional Red List workshop held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in February 2017. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level, so that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. A regional overview of chondrichthyan fisheries, management and conservation is also presented.
Marine turtles of the Maldives

This field guide provides information on marine turtles in the Maldives. Marine turtles live permanently in a saltwater environment. Unlike tortoises, marine turtles have a streamlined shell and flippers that allow them to swim quickly, but this is not enough to survive in saltwater. Their breathing and circulatory systems have, therefore, adapted to marine life.

A workshop was held in Cambridge between March 20-22, 2017, to bring together the PiN team and the Global Species Programme (GSP) and TRAFFIC to discuss the inclusion of data from PiN landscape assessments within the Species Information Services (SIS), building on discussions held over the last four years. The objective of the meeting was to collectively agree on the content and architecture of a PiN benefits assessment within SIS and explore how to apply this assessment from an institutional perspective.

La investigación-acción de equidad y REDD+ realizada en Perú apuntó a responder las siguientes preguntas:1. Qué significa «equidad» y cómo se relaciona con las iniciativas de conservación y manejo sostenible de los bosques vinculadas al cambio climático, como REDD+?; 2. ¿Cómo se aborda la equidad en los procesos de las iniciativas de conservación y manejo sostenible de los bosques relacionadas con el cambio climático, como REDD+? 3. ¿Cómo se puede fortalecer la equidad en los procesos REDD+ a nivel nacional y regional (subnacional)? La investigación-acción se realizó a escala nacional con énfasis en la región de San Martín, y contó con la participación de múltiples actores involucrados en iniciativas de conservación y manejo sostenible de los bosques relacionadas con cambio climático.

This report aimed at understanding resource use and dependence, perception of marine conservation policies, and adaptive capacities of communities of North Ari atoll, Maldives. It provides information on the social resilience of 8 local community islands in North Ari atoll, and identifies differences in gender role, in resource use and perception of enironmental issues. This study is key in understanding the value of ecosystem services in one atoll in the Maldives.
