This document discusses the potential for designing pro-poor systems for the distribution of benefits derived from the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) in the Yucatan Peninsula (comprised by the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan), Mexico. The paper describes the technical and legal constraints associated with benefit distribution in general and outlines current plans for REDD+ early action in the Peninsula, under which local development agencies will help ejidos draw up broad plans for sustainable rural development which may include many activities in addition to those that directly save carbon.

Participatory 3D modelling (P3DM) is one of the most remarkable innovations of the late 20th century. This volume bears testimony to the multiple uses and values of P3DM. In the examples described, the uses to which communities have put their models include natural resource planning and management; land and ocean rehabilitation; mapping their ancestral territories and establishing their rights; planning for conservation; disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change and variability; educating children in schools about their history and cultural heritage; bringing together community members with differences; and negotiating with officials and influencing policy.

Recent developments have seen forest landscape restoration (FLR) become widely recognized as an important means of not only restoring ecological integrity at scale but also generating additional local-to-global benefits. This handbook presents the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), which provides a flexible and affordable framework for countries to rapidly identify and analyse FLR potential and locate special areas of opportunity at a national or sub-national level. The handbook offers practical advice and options to bear in mind when considering or conducting an FLR assessment using ROAM, as well as real-life examples of the kinds of outputs you can expect, and will enable you to commission or design a tailor-made process to meet your specific needs. This "road-test" edition of the handbook is being circulated to engage others in the process of learning about -- and improving -- the methodology. A revised version of the handbook will be published at a later date in order to integrate learning from the road-testing process.

Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked mammal in the world. This report explores Lao PDR’s role in the illegal pangolin trade and discusses the findings of two market surveys, conducted in several locations as well as the outcomes of an analysis of pangolin seizures that involved Lao PDR as either an origin, transit, seizure or destination country between 2010 and 2015.

Ocean warming : causes, scale, effects and consequences...Executive summary
   

Ocean warming may well turn out to be the greatest hidden challenge of our generation. This report represents the most comprehensive review to date on ocean warming. To build up the report, leading scientists from around the world were invited to join with colleagues to contribute individual chapters.  It contains many recommendations from the scientists on capability gaps and research issues that need to be resolved if we are to tackle the impacts of ocean warming with greater confidence in the future. The focus of the report is on gathering facts and knowledge and communicating this to show what is now happening in and to the ocean. There is purposefully much less focus on political ramifications. We hope that this report will help stimulate further debate and action on such issues.

It will be useful for both understanding the impacts of imaging surveys on managed resources and planning future activities. To increase consistency in both the evaluation and mitigation of potential effects, the process described in this document involves a systematic evaluation of activities and potential impacts, recognizing that these may impinge on multiple regulatory jurisdictions. The focus is on marine mammals; nonetheless the elements of this planning tool are applicable and adaptable for application where the focus is on any locally important species, e.g., fishes, sea turtles, seabirds.
