The Red List of marine bony fishes of the Eastern Central Atlantic (ECA) is a review of the conservation status of all native marine bony fishes in ECA according to the global Categories and Criteria of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the global level and occur within the ECA region. This comprehensive assessment, which is the first of its kind in the ECA, aims to provide improved knowledge of species presence and extinction risk status for the purposes of guiding conservation actions and improved policies for these species both globally and regionally.

This guide has been written to inspire and empower reef managers and community leaders to develop reef stewardship programs. Stewardship is a way of empowering local communities to take a more active role in sustaining the natural resources on which they depend.

   

This document will share with a broad audience of practitioners and policy makers, notably in the West Asia and Mediterranean regions, what integrated approaches are necessary to make water resources management and climate change resilience actions a success. It will describe the underlying conceptual framework of these different approaches that underpin successful actions in the four Thematic Areas distinguished within the Regional Knowledge Network on Systemic Approaches to Sustainable Water Resources Management (R-KNOW).

   

The Protected Planet Report 2016 assesses how protected areas contribute to achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and relevant targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, and highlights current research and case studies as examples of the role protected areas play in conserving biodiversity and cultural heritage.

   

Ocean warming may well turn out to be the greatest hidden challenge of our generation. This report represents the most comprehensive review to date on ocean warming. To build up the report, leading scientists from around the world were invited to join with colleagues to contribute individual chapters.  It contains many recommendations from the scientists on capability gaps and research issues that need to be resolved if we are to tackle the impacts of ocean warming with greater confidence in the future. The focus of the report is on gathering facts and knowledge and communicating this to show what is now happening in and to the ocean. There is purposefully much less focus on political ramifications. We hope that this report will help stimulate further debate and action on such issues.

This document sets forth SSC guiding principles on the creation of proxies for extinct species as a potential conservation tool to restore biological diversity, to enhance ecosystem stability and resilience, and to engage in meaningful dialogue with the public about the role of proxy creation for conservation.

   

Predicting climate change impacts on biodiversity is a major scientific challenge. A range of methods have been developed for climate change vulnerability assessment (CCVA) of species and a large and burgeoning scientific literature is emerging on this subject. Our motivation for preparing this document is to ease the challenge that conservation practitioners face in interpreting and using the complex and often inconsistent CCVA literature.

   

This study presents some lessons from a selection of IUCN interventions in dryland areas that have adapted to a greater or lesser extent to the conditions of drylands, notably focusing on water management to deal with scarcity and variability. The study is intended as a means of capturing lessons learned from these interventions on the challenges and opportunities for improving water development in drylands. It is primarily a learning document compiled by the IUCN Secretariat, with technical advice from the Dryland Ecosystems Thematic Group of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management. The document will also be shared with IUCN members and partners to catalyse deeper thinking and more effective action on water interventions in drylands as a first step in establishing improved systematic approaches and tools for influencing policy and investment regarding water management in drylands.

   

As habitats and ecosystems become increasingly altered and populations evermore impacted by human activities, a growing number of species will require some form of management of both individuals and populations to ensure their survival. Ex situ management is one possible option that can contribute to the conservation of threatened species. The aim of these guidelines is to provide practical guidance on evaluating the suitability and requirements of an ex situ component for achieving species conservation objectives. 

   

La Liste Rouge des Écosystèmes de l’UICN est un nouveau cadre mondial pour surveiller l’état des écosystèmes. Elle fait partie d’une boîte à outils toujours en expansion qui sert à évaluer les risques encourus par la biodiversité et qui a pour but de servir d’appui aux politiques de conservation de la nature, à l’utilisation des ressources naturelles et aux décisions managériales en identifiant les écosystèmes qui présentent un risque élevé de perte de biodiversité.  Les fondements de la Liste Rouge des Écosystèmes de l’UICN reposent sur les Critères et Catégories de la Liste Rouge des Écosystèmes de l’UICN, cinq critères et huit catégories qui fournissent une méthode cohérente pour évaluer le risque d’effondrement des écosystèmes. Les lignes directrices ont pour vocation d’assurer l’implémentation correcte des Critères et Catégories de la Liste Rouge des Écosystèmes de l’UICN en fournissant des informations sur le développement du protocole et en présentant une vue d’ensemble détaillée des fondements scientifiques qui sous-tendent les critères et catégories.

Es parte de la creciente caja de herramientas para la evaluación de riesgos para la biodiversidad y su objetivo es apoyar la conservación, el uso de recursos, y las decisiones de gestión mediante la identificación de los ecosistemas en mayor riesgo de pérdida de biodiversidad. La base de la Lista Roja de Ecosistemas de UICN son las Categorías y Criterios de la Lista Roja Ecosistemas de UICN, un conjunto de ocho categorías y cinco criterios que proporcionan un método consistente para la evaluación del riesgo de colapso de un ecosistema. Las directrices ayudan a la correcta aplicación de las Categorías y Criterios de la Lista Roja de Ecosistemas de UICN proporcionando información sobre el desarrollo del protocolo y una descripción detallada de los fundamentos científicos que soportan las categorías y criterios.

The rapid growth and widespread use of social media has allowed these new platforms to facilitate wildlife trade, both legal and illegal. With this in mind, TRAFFIC undertook a rapid assessment to monitor wildlife trade occurring on 14 Facebook groups in Peninsular Malaysia, conducted over approximately 50 hours during a five month period (November 2014 – March 2015).

This study is focused on four otter species in Asia; the Eurasian Otter Lutra lutra, the Hairy-nosed Otter Lutra sumatrana, the Small-clawed Otter Aonyx cinereus and the Smooth-coated Otter Lutrogale perspicillata. The illegal wildlife trade poses a direct threat to all four species as they are popular for their fur and increasingly for their supposed qualities as pets. This study is an analysis of otter seizure data during the period 1980 to July 2015 inclusive.
