The importance of groundwater in social and economic development is easily overlooked. Its value in the economy and in economic development is frequently underestimated when policy makers in governments, business investors or local farmers and communities assume that the springs, wells and boreholes they rely on will continue to supply high quality freshwater, forever. Where these mistaken assumptions continue, the benefits of groundwater for development will be lost. Where groundwater management is sustainable, its potential contributions cross multiple dimensions of sustainable development. Sustainable groundwater management can ensure climate-resilient supplies of water needed to help meet goals for food security, energy development and access to drinking water. It can supply water for sustainable cities and for industrialisation. Sustainable groundwater management is key for the conservation of groundwater dependent ecosystems in groundwater discharge areas.

This report has been prepared as part of an effort by IUCN to define its position on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and plan for future work to advance this concept and support effective implementation of NbS to enhance ecosystem services provision and address societal challenges. The report proposes a definitional framework for NbS, including a set of general principles for any NbS intervention. The report also defines the scope of NbS as an umbrella concept embracing a number of different ecosystem-based approaches.

This research sheds light on Japan’s wildlife trade history as a case study on the contributing factors that helped reduce the market for rhino horn and elephant ivory. By conducting comprehensive research into these phenomena, this report aims to elucidate the circumstances and drivers for change, in the hope that it may provide useful understanding for the contemporary context in other Asian markets facing problems with wildlife trade. Additionally, this study critically reviewed the status of the current domestic market and regulations to amplify where Japan stands today in terms of the historical and global context and provides recommendations for addressing current issues in Japan, especially in light of severe contemporary global levels of illegal wildlife trade.

The Humphead Wrasse Cheilinus undulatus is a naturally rare coral reef fish species. This study was designed to understand further the regulations in Hong Kong and mainland China, both major consumer markets, for HHW import, re-export and domestic sale; as well as the level of implementation of national laws, including inspection and enforcement practices for shipments made between Hong Kong and mainland China.

This study on the market potential of sustainably wild-collected botanical ingredients originating from the People’s Republic of China with fair and organic certifications provides an overview of current export trade in both wild-collected and cultivated botanical, algal and fungal ingredients from China, market segments such as the fair trade and organic sectors, and the market trends for certified ingredients. It also investigates which international standards would be the most appropriate and applicable to the special case of China in consideration of its biodiversity conservation efforts in traditional wild collection communities and regions, and includes bibliographical references (pp. 139–140).

An Internationally Designated Area (IDA) is a natural area internationally recognised by a global or regional designation mechanism. Among these, there are 263 areas where different IDAs fully or partially overlap thus carrying double, triple or even quadruple international designations. These areas are named Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs) for the purpose of this publication. Following up on Resolution WCC-2012-Res-052 adopted at the IUCN World Conservation Congress (Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, September 2012), this Guidance addresses specific issues related to the management of MIDAs, and includes recommendations for harmonising the management, systematic conservation and sustainable use of these areas aimed at the local, national and international stakeholders of MIDAs.

BIOPAMA’s capacity-development strategy in Central and West Africa aims to encourage the managers and administrators of the protected areas (PA) to use the regional information system, or Regional Observatory for Protected Areas and Biodiversity. For 2015 2016, it calls for the training of “BIOPAMA coaches for protected areas” (hereby referred to as “coaches”) to incite PA field managers, as a matter of priority, and then the managers at the national and regional levels, to understand and use the Decision Support System (DSS) for the analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation of biodiversity and PA management and governance. The present document (Coach Observatory Mission Information Toolkit (COMIT) of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) programme) is a pedagogical support tool aimed at helping coaches to carry out their training/support assignments.

In any area with potential for restoration, companies are likely to be key players. We created this guide to help NGOs and others who want to engage constructively with companies on forest restoration. The recommendations, information, and resources are based on interviews and surveys of corporate leaders, other studies and reports on topics such as communicating for conservation and corporate–NGO engagement, and our experience working with the private sector.

This Responsive Forest Governance Initiative Handbook defines basic democratic concepts and explains how democratic governance works. It then lays out responsive forest governance principles to be used when working with local government, parallel
organizations, and citizens. Finally, the handbook provides two assessment tools, the Preliminary Institutional Landscape Assessment (PILA) and the Local Environmental Governance Assessment (LEGA). This handbook is aimed at a general audience of practitioners, policy makers, activists, and students. It is designed to be used as a basic text in policy maker workshops and practitioner training courses and to guide policy and project assessments in the field. Policymakers and practitioners with more experience will be able to use this as a policy and project design tool and to guide implementation in project sites.
