2012 lived up to its promise of being one of the busiest years for the global environmental community. From the birth of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) to the Rio+20 conference, and from UN climate and biodiversity meetings to IUCN’s own World Conservation Congress, our Union certainly had our hands full this year. All of these major policy events focused on intensifying global efforts towards sustainable development and keeping us within planetary boundaries. And IUCN used its voice and influence to advocate that it is only by investing in nature that we can create a sustainable future for everyone. This annual report documents the highlights and the achievements of the Union in 2012.

Learn about traditional methods of agricultural production and water management of the Quechua indigenous communities located at the foot of Chimborazo volcano. Some examples include seed conservation and management, slow-forming terraces, tilling the soil with yokes and hoes, intercropping, among others. Also, water management practices like the zig-zag furrow irrigation, a pre- Hispanic technology that facilitates the uniform irrigation of agricultural lands. This publication is part of a series produced by IUCN and SPDA through the project El Clima Cambia, Cambia tú También, supported by AECID.

The World Heritage List includes 156 properties explicitly recognized for their outstanding biodiversity values, which together represent the world’s major ecosystems. However, some areas with outstanding biodiversity values are still not part of this network of ‘biodiversity World Heritage sites’. To address this issue, IUCN and UNEP-WCMC have developed this global thematic study, with a focus on the terrestrial realm. The study updates previous analyses and identifies broad gaps as well as potentially outstanding biodiversity sites that may merit World Heritage listing. A study is underway for the marine realm. These reports are the latest in a long series of global and regional studies that, over the years, have provided critical guidance for the development of the World Heritage List.

Learn about traditional practices related to the indigenous knowledge of “healing time”, including the performance of rituals for the seasonal cycles and the shamanistic management of the seasonal supply of wildlife of the Noyuya, Uitoto, Andoque, Yucana, Matapi and Muinane ethnic groups that live in the Corregimiento of Araracuara, in the Colombian Amazon. This publication is part of a series produced by IUCN and SPDA through the project El Clima Cambia, Cambia tú También, supported by AECID.

This annual report is the last on the four–year period that ended in December 2012. It is designed to give an idea of the IUCN set –up in Central and West Africa, the actions undertaken and latest achievements; it also gives an idea of the IUCN Comprehensive Programme adopted in Jeju last September.

Ecosystem goods and services make critical contributions to food security by supporting the availability, access and use of foods, and by strengthening the stability of food systems. Ecosystem degradation and weak ecosystem governance not only compromise the ability of developing country populations to farm, access and use food effectively, but also undermine the effectiveness of food security policies. At the same time, inappropriate policies can damage ecosystems and their ability to support food security. An ecosystem-aware approach to food security policymaking goes beyond the conventional focus to take a big-picture view to the development of sustainable food systems.

This report brings together a broad range of new and existing information on 2,358 plant and animal species of the Albertine Rift (AR) region of East and Central Africa. A collaborative project assessed the climate change vulnerability of all known Albertine Rift mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, as well as a range of plants, whilst simultaneously gathering detailed information on their use by humans. This powerful combination of climate change vulnerability and use information provided a new tool for assessment of the possible impacts of climate change on the important provisioning services these species provide. These results have been combined with Red List assessments of species' extinction risk due to non-climate change driven threats, where available. Overall, this study presents the results of perhaps the most holistic assessment to date of the status of, threats to, and use by humans of the region's biota.
