This publication follows on from Volume I in the series on legal aspects of connectivity conservation. It provides five case studies that continue to define and develop connectivity conservation law for supporting protected areas and for providing opportunities to address climate change as part of biodiversity conservation agendas. Volumes I and II together aim to advance conceptual thinking and legal understanding about important law and policy tools and options for supporting the connectivity of protected area systems. The legal research and analyses reflected in these papers span international, regional, national and local levels. A range of legal instruments existing in most national legal systems, from conservation and sustainable use laws to land use planning, development control, voluntary conservation and economic instruments are explored.

The main goal of this Explanatory Guide is to facilitate the understanding of the legal obligations of the Parties under the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This guide is the product of a fruitful, constructive, and harmonious collaboration with ABS experts from different regions and international institutions who engaged with IUCN in the writing and reviewing of this Guide. This publication serves as an adaptable tool for future ABS capacity-building and awareness raising initiatives, as well as an important reference for countries in their efforts to implement the Nagoya Protocol and operationalize ABS in practice.

This document aims to share lessons learned from the implementation of the Poverty Reduction and Environmental Management Initiative (PREMI) designed and executed by the Central and West Africa Programme of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-PACO). This initiative sought to promote integrated management of natural resources, reduce poverty and adapt to climate change in West Africa.

It was deliberately simplified in order to enable all economist and non-economist actors to take ownership of it. It allows quick understanding of the most commonly used economic valuation concepts and methods applied by natural ecosystem evaluators. It is not claiming to address all issues relating to the economic valuation of ecological services. However, it enables non specialists of environmental economics to understand the basic principles and to further engage in the application of economic valuation of ecosystems.

Invasive alien plants and their management in Africa : how a multi-country "War on Weeds" project is helping an infested continent to stem the colonising onslaught of invasive species

This book describes how the four-year GEF-funded project “Removing Barriers to Invasive Plant Management in Africa” was instrumental in developing ways of limiting the severe ecological, social and economic impacts in different parts of Africa of a number of particularly devastating alien plant invaders. Tackling climate change through livestock : a global assessment of emissions and mitigation opportunities

As renewed international efforts are needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the livestock sector can contribute its part. An important emitter of greenhouse gas, it also has the potential to significantly reduce its emissions. This report provides a unique global assessment of the magnitude, the sources and pathways of emissions from different livestock production systems and supply chains. Relying on life cycle assessment, statistical analysis and scenario building, it also provides estimates of the sector’s mitigation potential and identifies concrete options to reduce emissions. The report is a useful resource for stakeholders from livestock producers to policy-makers, researchers and civil society representatives, which also intends to inform the public debate on the role of livestock supply chains in climate change and possible solution.

The marine World Heritage thematic study was written to provide guidance to States Parties and conservation practitioners on how to best apply the World Heritage Convention in the oceans and seas. The study proposes a scientific framework as the foundation for a well-balanced and representative set of features that may be of Outstanding Universal Value to inform choices when nominating or inscribing sites. It also analyses the current biogeographic coverage of marine World Heritage sites (mWHS) and identifies broad gaps in representation.

Lake Titicaca Basin : Peru and Bolivia : enhancing transboundary cooperation through technical coordination and institutional reforms

Lake Titicaca exists within a fragile high altitude ecosystem shared between Bolivia and Peru. Since 2011, BRIDGE has been working in Lake Titicaca basin taking a non-conventional approach to water diplomacy promoting better cooperation. The region has a long history of technical expertise and water resource management with a transboundary institution established in 1993 on Lake Titicaca. Over the last two decades increasing development has put pressure on politicians to address necessary reforms of national and bi-national water institutions governing the basin. Responding to these challenges, BRIDGE has played an essential role in enabling and facilitating changes through a multi-level water diplomacy programme to build good water governance capacity. The programme uses a combination of knowledge and information tools, procedural advice and technical support, capacity building and training to strengthen relations between stakeholders across local, provincial, national, and regional levels.
The 3S river basin (Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam) : creating spaces for cooperation through multi-level dialogue and capacity building

The Sesan, Sre Pok, and Sekong rivers, referred to as the 3S river basin, are shared by three countries and constitute a significant part of the Lower Mekong river basin. The BRIDGE project implements water diplomacy in transboundary basins, and is working in the 3S to build and strengthen water governance capacity. The 3S river basin contains the only transboundary tributaries of the Mekong covering over 78,650 square kilometres. Rapid development of hydropower and mining which has prompted renewed efforts to improve cooperation, challenged by the fact that the three countries it is shared between have vastly different political and institutional arrangements. As a result of these challenges, BRIDGE uses a combination of facilitating dialogue, information tools, and capacity building bringing together and strengthening stakeholders across local, provincial, national, and regional levels.
Goascorán Basin : Honduras and El Salvador : revitalising cooperative management through expanding stakeholder involvement

The waters of the Goascorán River are shared between Honduras and El Salvador. Since 2011, BRIDGE has worked to promote better cooperation over transboundary waters, taking a non-conventional approach to water diplomacy. One of the challenges was the level of involvement in the institutional arrangement existing in the basin. The initial makeup of the Binational Management Group (BMG) had a limited representation of Municipalities only giving the institution a narrow scope and legitimacy with stakeholders. There was a need to revitalise the BMG expanding the level of participation across scales and across sectors. Responding to these challenges, BRIDGE has played an essential role in enabling and facilitating changes through a multi-level water diplomacy programme to build good water governance capacity. It uses a combination of knowledge and information tools, procedural advice and technical support, and capacity building and training to strengthen relations between stakeholders across local, provincial, national, and regional levels.
Plano estratégico : para um complexo de áreas protegidas transfronteiriças nos ecossistemas do Mayombe
   

A elaboração do Plano estratégico dos ecossistemas florestais do Mayombe está baseada na estrutura geral utilizada no Plano estratégico da Rede das áreas protegidas transfronteiriças do Albertine Rift Central (2006). No entanto, este documento está adaptado és condições especificas, as ameaças e prioridades identificadas, e a disponibilidade das informações sobre a iniciativa florestal do Mayombe. A fase inicial desta iniciativa também está tomada em conta. Desta forma, as lições aprendidas com a experiência de outras ACT/APT na região foram assimiladas.
Strategic plan : towards a transboundary protected area complex in the Mayombe forest ecosystems
   

This strategic plan is adapted to the Mayombe forest initiative’s specific conditions, identified threats and priorities, and information availability. Lessons learned from other experience of other TFCAs/TPAs in the region were also assimilated.

L'élaboration du Plan stratégique transfrontalier des écosystèmes forestiers du Mayombe est basée sur la structure générale utilisée dans le Plan stratégique du Réseau des aires protégées transfrontalières du Rift Albertin central (2006). Toutefois, ce document est adapté aux conditions spécifiques, aux menaces et prioritées identifiées, et à la disponibilité des informations concernant l'initiative forestière du Mayombe. L'étape initiale de cette initiative est également prise en considération. De même, les leçons tirées de l'expérience des autres ACT/APT dans la région ont été assimilées.
Jamaican Iguana : species recovery plan, 2006-2013

The Jamaican Iguana Recovery Group (JIRG) is a consortium of local Jamaican organizations and international conservation groups that held a workshop in July 2006 to formulate this Species Recovery Plan (SRP) for the Jamaican iguana. The document presents the priority conservation actions and organizational responsibility for those activities discussed at the workshop. Due to the time lag between the workshop and the printing of the final SRP document, some actions have been completed and others have been initiated. Appropriately then, this final SRP document includes an update on the progress of specific recovery actions. Finally, based on recent (2006-2011) research results, several actions have been added to those identified in the original workshop; otherwise, proposed activities and timelines remain as originally formulated.
Governance of protected areas : from understanding to action
