This publication is the result of the International Conference held in Frankfurt, Germany 14-16 June 2011 organized in the framework of an International UN Project funded by IFAD “Reinforcing the resilience of poor rural communities in the face of food insecurity, poverty and climate change through on-farm conservation of local agrobiodiversity”. Twenty seven scientists from 11 countries participated and contributed to this publication with their long-term experience and expertise in agricultural research for the conservation and use of agrobiodiversity and the adaptation to climate change in support of the rural poor around the world. The lessons learnt through this exercise will be tested by the countries involved in the IFAD project (India, Nepal and Bolivia) and the results will be used for the development of enabling policies in support of in situ/on farm conservation of traditional crops and varieties/Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS) around the world.

Forest management and climate change
   

This document was written to facilitate the preparation of the guidelines that FAO is preparing to assist forest managers to understand, assess and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. The objective was to determine if and how forest management is changing or could change in order to respond effectively to climate change challenges and mitigation opportunities. It reviews the current understanding of climate change impacts on forests and forest management, assesses the challenges that these bring to forest managers at the forest management unit level and provides examples of how forest managers have responded to these challenges. The document also identifies what is needed to create an enabling policy, legal and institutional environment that would support forest managers’ efforts in mitigation and adaptation.

For the first time a comprehensive overview of geo-conservation in Europe has been presented in a book. Geoheritage in Europe and its Conservation includes specific contributions from 37 countries focussing on legislation and geoconservation practices. The only record of the history of our planet lies in the rocks beneath our feet: rocks and the landscape are the memory of the Earth. Here, and only here, is it possible to trace the processes, changes and upheavals which have formed our planet over thousands of millions of years: the more recent part of this record, of course, includes the evolution of life, including Man. The record preserved in the rocks and landscape is unique, and much of it is surprisingly fragile. Today it is threatened more than ever. What is lost can never be recovered, and therefore there is an urgent need to understand and protect what remains of this our common heritage.

Biodiversity of climate change : reports and guidance developed under the Bern Convention
   

The effects of climate change on ecosystems are complex. The impact on the species and habitats protected by the Bern Convention may differ widely, depending on the species, their habitats and location. This publication includes six expert reports presenting concrete measures for addressing the vulnerability of Europe's natural heritage in the face of climate change and its effects, and how this heritage must adapt in order to survive.This publication reproduces the full text of Recommendation 135 (2008) on addressing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, adopted by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in November 2008, which stresses the urgent need to tackle the impact of climate change on biological diversity and on its conservation. With this publication, the Council of Europe aims to increase awareness about the links between biodiversity and climate, and emphasise the large potential for synergies when addressing biodiversity loss and climate change in an integrated manner.

The North American forest sector outlook study : 2006-2030
   

Projections for the United States and Canada to 2030 have been made with a global model to account for concurrent changes in other countries. Three future scenarios were investigated: two IPCC-based scenarios assuming the rapid growth of wood-based energy, and one IPCC-based scenario without this assumption. The model, under the IPCC scenarios, accounted for trends in population, income and land use along with emerging technology and predicted changes to consumption patterns for wood products and bioenergy. Markets for wood products, which mainly are destined for the construction sector in North America, are projected to recover by 2015 under all three scenarios examined. Projections suggest that, in spite of declining use of paper for media, other paper and paperboard for packaging and miscellaneous uses will continue to enjoy strong global demand.

The reassessment is based on a wealth of the latest research and scientific work on climate change and the carbon economy. The main finding of this report is that climate change has already held back global development : it is already a significant cost to the world economy, while inaction on climate change can be considered a leading global cause of death.
