Les aires marines protegees (AMP) du reseau MedPAN sont confrontees a des problematiques communes, comme le manque de prise de conscience et de comprehension des impacts causes par les especes envahissantes, la rarete des informations sur les meilleures pratiques en matiere de gestion, et une insuffisance de directives, de donnees de base et de personnel local qualifie pour identifier et recueillir des informations sur l'introduction, la propagation et l'impact des especes exotiques. L'objectif de ce guide est d'aborder une partie de ces besoins et d'aider les AMP mediterraneennes a elaborer un programme d'EEE (especes exotiques envahissantes) efficace. Il inclut des informations sur les voies d'introduction et les impacts des grandes especes marines ayant envahi la mer Mediterranee, sur la maniere de les surveiller et de les identifier, et sur ce qui peut etre fait pour prevenir leur etablissement et leur propagation au sein des AMP.

Las áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) en toda la Red MedPAN se enfrentan a retos comunes, entre ellos la falta de concienciación y entendimiento de los impactos de especies invasoras, la escasez de información sobre mejores prácticas de gestión y la falta de información de referencia, directrices y personal local formado para identificar y recoger información sobre la introducción, propagación e impacto de especies exóticas. El objetivo de esta guía es cubrir parte de estas necesidades y ayudar a las AMP en el Mediterráneo a desarrollar un programa eficaz para las especies exóticas invasoras. Además, contiene información sobre las rutas de introducción y los impactos de las principales especies marinas que han invadido el mar Mediterráneo, sobre cómo realizar un control y seguimiento e identificarlas y sobre qué puede hacerse para prevenir su establecimiento y dispersión en AMP.

This publication was developed to provide guidance on the benefits of and ways to integrate environmental concerns into disaster risk reduction strategies (DRR) at the local and national levels. As recognised and outlined within the Hyogo Framework for Action priority 4, healthy ecosystems and environmental management are considered key actions in DRR. Although the field of disaster risk management has evolved to recognize the need for addressing sustainable development issues for reducing risk, the environmental dimension has not to date received adequate attention and practical guidance.

Monitoring marine invasive species in Mediterranean marine protected areas (MPAs) : a strategy and practical guide for managers

Marine protected areas (MPAs) across the MedPAN Network face common challenges, among them the lack of awareness and understanding of the impacts of invasive species, the scarcity of information on best management practices and a lack of baseline information, guidelines and trained local staff to identify and gather more information on the introduction, spread and impact of alien species. The objective of this guide is to aid Mediterranean MPAs in developing an effective invasive alien species (IAS) programme. It contains information on the introduction pathways and impacts of major marine species that have invaded the Mediterranean Sea, on how to monitor and identify them and on what can be done to prevent their establishment and spread in MPAs.
Review of statutory and customary law in the Xe Champhone Ramsar site, Lao PDR : implications for a rights-based approach to conservation

In order to gain further experience on rights-based approaches (RBAs) to conservation, the project focused on undertaking a situation analysis in the Xe Champhone Ramsar Site in Lao PDR. It examined the under-researched issue of customary law governing natural resources, including its relationship with statutory law. This publication summarizes and analyses the findings of the field work. It also provides recommendations on how to incorporate customary law governing natural resources into the governance of Ramsar sites in the country. On the basis of the recommendations and at the request of the government, the project drafted two decrees – one national-level decree on management of Ramsar sites in Lao PDR generally, and one for the management of Xe Champhone Ramsar Site. This work complements Lao government research and opens the door for similar research in other parts of the country.

Everybody knows that humans are members of the mammalian Order Primates, but ask somebody to name some of our cousins and they would at best come up with five or six of the most widely known. This volume counts more than 470 of them: 138 species of prosimians - the lemurs, lorises, pottos and tarsiers in Africa and Asia; 156 species of monkeys in the New World tropics; another 158 monkeys in the Old World tropics; and 25 apes, 19 of them gibbons along with six chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. This publication presents these species in all their remarkable variety of shapes, sizes, colors, habits and specializations.

Ecosystems and disaster risk reduction in the context of the great east Japan earthquake and tsunami : a scoping study : report to the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund

The research focused on the perceptions of communities on the role of ecosystems for disaster risk reduction, particularly in the context of the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan. The research was carried out in the region of Sendai, and a study reviewed the institutional setup and mechanisms for Japan’s risk reduction, reconstruction and land use planning. Key experiences and perspectives of the local communities provide insights on how ecosystems are perceived and how the role of ecosystems during the 3/11 events was perceived. The document concludes by highlighting some research gaps and recommendation for further analyses as well as the valuable lessons Japan is learning, that can assist other countries to help build resilient communities.

Economic performance of climate change adaptation activities in the Volta Basin

This study presents an evaluation of the economic performance of some adaptation activities promoted by IUCN in Burkina Faso and Ghana. The overall objective of the evaluation is to contribute to participatory learning about economic benefits of climate change adaptation initiatives. Specifically, it aims at identifying and analyzing the content, scope and relevance of adaptation activities and evaluating the costs and benefits generated by such activities.

The African elephant, the largest remaining land mammal on the planet, is facing the greatest crisis in decades. Reports of mass elephant killings in the media vividly illustrate the situation across many African elephant range states. This publication provides an overview of the current state of the African elephant alongside recommendations for action to ensure its protection. This report has been written in close consultation with experts and a range of sources including CITES Monitoring Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) Programme, the Elephant Trade Information System (ETIS), the IUCN African and Asian Elephant Specialist Groups, and the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC). The findings provide a clear overview of the current African elephant crisis.
The economics of ecosystems and biodiversity for water and wetlands
   

This report presents insights on both critical water-related ecosystem services and also on the wider ecosystem services from wetlands. The objective is encourage additional policy momentum, business commitment, and investment in the conservation, restoration, and wise use of wetlands. The report seeks to show how recognising, demonstrating, and capturing the values of ecosystem services related to water and wetlands can lead to better informed, more efficient, and fairer decision making. Appreciating the values of wetlands to both society and the economy can help inform and facilitate political commitment to policy solutions.
