World Heritage sites and the extractive industries

This short independent study focuses on the relationship between the extractive industries and natural World Heritage properties. It was commissioned through IUCN in conjunction with the World Heritage Centre, as well as the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and Shell; the latter two funded the exercise. Although its focus is on decisions that may be taken in this regard by the World Heritage Committee, the review is intended to inform a wider range of stakeholders about the issues, challenges and opportunities arising from the tension and potential interdependence between the economic imperatives of mineral and hydrocarbon extraction and the conservation imperatives of preserving the world’s natural heritage.
Measuring progress : environmental goals and gaps
   

Despite the impressive number of legal texts and many good intentions, real progress in solving the environmental challenges themselves has been much less comprehensive. This report outlines findings from a UNEP study that has catalogued and analyzed existing "Global Environmental Goals" contained in the international agreements and conventions. It highlights gaps in our ability to measure progress, including the absence of clear numerical targets and important data gaps on many issues. If agreements and conventions are to achieve their intended purpose, the international community needs to consider specific and measurable goals when designing such treaties, while organizing the required data gathering and putting in place proper tracking systems from the outset.
GEO 5 : Global environment outlook : environment for the future we want
   

Published to coincide with the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, UNEP's 2012 Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-5) calls on world leaders to take immediate action to address international environmental degradation and turn world-wide discussion of sustainable development into practice. GEO-5 builds on the findings of previous GEO reports, outlines the current state of the environment, projects future environmental trends and focuses on the smart policies that could put the world on the path to a sustainable future.

La guía establece un marco para estructurar inversiones, con consejos tácticos para desarollar las alianzas/asociaciones necesarias para una IBLC. El aspecto central de la guía es el trazado de una ruta hacia una IBLC exitosa.
