In 2002, a detailed situation analysis of water and environmental issues was done for the Pangani Basin. Following that, a series of pilot projects funded by the Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) of IUCN and by DFID led to the development of a Pangani River Basin Management Project (PRBMP) that continued until 2011. In the final phase of the project, climate change was investigated further.
This summary is based on Crooks, S., Herr, D., Laffoley, D., Tamelander, J. and Vandever, J. 2010. New Opportunities to Regulate Climate Change through Restoration and Management of Coastal Wetlands and Marine Ecosystems. World Bank, IUCN, ESA PWA (renamed "Mitigating climate change through restoration and management of coastal wetlands and near-shore marine ecosystems: challenges and opportunities" upon publication in 2011).
This report builds on these and other efforts to bring to light the important carbon sequestration potential of coastal wetlands, and the significant and largely unaccounted for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the disturbance, drainage, and conversion of these natural coastal carbon sinks for agriculture, tourism and other coastal development.
Although Bonaires coral reefs remain among the healthiest and most resilient in the Caribbean, this IUCN report based on the IUCN Resilience Assessment of Coral Reefs highlights some of the threats that exist to Bonaires coral reefs, and which could have serious implications for resilience to future climate change and other threats. The report identified recommendations for addressing the current threats, as well as high and low resilience sites.
In 2007, IUCN, UNDP, UNEP and WEDO recognized the need for a coordinated strategy among global institutions working on gender and climate change. The result was the establishment of the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA). The primary goal of the GGCA is to ensure that climate change policies, decision making, and initiatives at the global, regional and national levels are gender-responsive.
Recognizing the importance of promoting global efforts underway for sustainable development of the oceans, the Göteborg Award Selection Jury is pleased to distribute a special volume, Sustainable Development of the Worlds Large Marine Ecosystems during Climate Change on the occasion of the presentation of the 2010 Göteborg Award.
This DVD includes the full length versions of two movies by John D. Liu: "Hope in a Changing Climate" (29 minutes) and "Rwanda -- Back to the Garden" (27 minutes).
This study entailed a review of the existing literature relevant to agriculture policy, water policy and the status of various conventions/protocols to which Pakistan is a signatory. It identifies the gaps and makes recommendations on ways and means to address the gaps in the existing documents. Gap analysis techniques include commenting on what the present state is and how one could get to a desired state.
