This book serves as a guide for identifying Sphagnum mosses in both field and laboratory. Forty species, typical of more continental parts of Europe, but also commonly found elsewhere in the northern hemisphere, are presented. The primary emphasis is on the illustrations, mainly photographs, depicting both macroscoptic and microscopic characteristics of the species.

Le présent rapport constitue une synthèse de l'ensemble des listes rouges suisses des espèces végétales, animales et fongiques. Plusieurs analyses ciblées apportent un nouvel éclairage sur l'état et la répartition géographique d'espèces menacées et sur les menaces elles-mêmes. Les travaux relatifs aux listes rouges sont coordonnés par l'Office fédéral de l'environnement (OFEV).

Red Lists are recognised scientific inventories which indicate the extinction risk of species. This report compiles and analyses all of the data from the existing Swiss Red Lists of threatened plants, animals and fungi. A number of specific analyses provide new insights into the status and spatial distribution of threatened species as well as into the nature of the threats they are affected by. Red List projects are coordinated by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

The author argues that all ecosystems have been modified and the idea of places 'untouched by humans' is a myth. But there are large differences in the degree of modification and levels of naturalness which can be identified. Practical issues of management and numerous terrestrial and aquatic examples from around the world are discussed.
Odontocetes : the toothed whales

The conservation status of the toothed whales has worsened dramatically since 2001. Since then, more species have been listed in the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable and Nearly Threatended, while the Baiji river dolphin, which used to live in the Yangtze River, is now probably extinct. One major threat to toothed whales world wide is entanglement in fishing gear. This alone claimed an unsustainably high death toll and for 86% of all toothed whale species, entanglement and death in gillnets, traps, weirs, purse seines, longlines and trawls poses a major risk. Lack of food and forced dietary shifts due to overfishing pose additional threats to 13 species. This encyclopaedia outlines the most recent findings in many areas of cetacean biology, from genetic work to habitat and dietary preferences, schooling and reactions to human induced noise. It will greatly facilitate the development and implementation of action plans that may help reduce the threats to many whale species.
Forests and people : property, governance, and human rights

This publication presents a comprehensive analysis of the rights-based agenda in forestry, connecting it with existing work on tenure reform, governance rights and human rights. The attention to rights in forestry differs from 'rights-based approaches' in international development and other natural resource fields in critical ways. Above all, redistribution is a central demand of activists in forestry, but not in other fields. In addition, the rights agenda in forestry emerges from numerous grassroots initiatives, setting forest-related human rights apart from approaches that are driven by international and national organizations. The book is a response to the challenges that remain for advocates as new trends and initiatives (such as market-based governace, REDD+ and a rush to biofuels) can sometimes seem at odds with the gains from what has been a two-decade expansion of forest people's rights. It explores the implications of these forece, generating new insights on forest governance for scholars and providing strategic guidance for activists.

Concerns about food and energy security, coupled with increasing returns from agriculture, have increased interest in agricultural investments in developing countries. Public debates about 'land grabbing' have questioned the socio-economic impacts of large-scale land acquisitions. There is new interest in business models involving collaboration between companies and communities. In Eastern Malaysia, community-investor business models have been implemented for several years to expand oil palm cultivation in customarily held lands. This report documents lessons learned through case studies of different business models.

Rote Listen sind anerkannte wissenschaftliche Fachgutachten, in denen der Gefährdungsgrad von Arten dargestellt ist. Für den vorliegenden Bericht wurden alle Daten aus den Roten Listen der gefährdeten Pflanzen-, Tier- und Pilzarten in der Schweiz zusammengeführt und ausgewertet. Mehrere Spezialauswertungen geben neue Einsichten zum Zustand und zur räumlichen Verteilung bedrohter Arten sowie zu den Gefährdungsursachen. Die Projekte für Rote Listen werden vom Bundesamt für Umwelt (BAFU) koordiniert.

Die Rote Liste der Flechten umfasst ca. 2.300 Arten. Obwohl viele Flechten als Symbiosen aus einem formgebenden Pilz- und einem photosynthetisierenden Algenpartner härteste Umweltbedingungen ertragen, gibt es viele gefährdete bzw. ausgestorbene oder verschollene Arten. Flechten reagieren deutlich auf nicht unmittelbar erkennbare Umweltveränderungen wie Stickstoff- und Schwefelemissionen. Die Rote Liste der Myxomyzeten bietet eine hervorragende Einführung in diese ungewöhnliche Organismengruppe. Ihr Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Gesamtartenliste mit Zusatzangaben zu Auftreten und Verbreitung. Die ca. 400 Schleimpilze sind als ökologische Gegenspieler boden- und streubewohnender Bakterien ein wichtiger, aber meist unsichtbarer Teil des Stoffkreislaufes. Nur die Fruchtkörper dieser Protisten sind makroskopisch sichtbar und oft eng an bestimmte Mikrohabitate gebunden.

Il se veut être un document clair, concis et illustré d'exemples de la sous-région. Il s'articule en deux parties distinctes. Une première partie décrit les grandes étapes de la rédaction du document, de la constitution d'une équipe de rédaction à la détermination des méthodes d'évaluation. Cette partie renvoie à une seconde partie, appelée "canevas de rédaction", qui aide le lecteur à construire son propre plan de gestion, en suivant un canevas qui s'adaptera à sa situation.
