Carbon credits from peatland rewetting : climate - biodiversity - land use

Belarus ranks 8th among the world's countries in terms of peatland CO2 emissions and occupies 3rd place in CO2-emissions per unit land area. In recent years, tens of thousands of hectares of drained peatlands in Belarus have been rewetted. This volume provides a synthesis of the challenges encountered and solutions adopted in a pilot project conducted in Belarus between 2008 and 2011. It presents data and conclusions from the project and relates basic principles to advanced applications, integrating science and politics, ecology and economy. The experiences and recommendations for peatland restoration set forth in this volume will inspire practitioners, land-use planners, scientists and politicians alike.

La biodiversité est le fondement même de notre vie - l’estimation de sa valeur économique, écologique, sociale et esthétique ne sera jamais trop élevée. Ainsi, en 2003, les ministres européens de l’environnement décidèrent d’endiguer l’érosion de la biodiversité avant 2010. Avons-nous atteint cet objectif? L’étude du Forum Biodiversité Suisse apporte une réponse documentée à cette question. L’analyse, très détaillée, s’appuie sur les meilleures données disponibles et dépeint, par une approche différenciée des multiples aspects de la diversité biologique, comment la biodiversité a évolué en Suisse depuis 1900. Les résultats montrent que la nécessité d’agir demeure.

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria provide an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them. This latest version of the classification system was adopted by the IUCN Council in February 2001 and reflects comments from the IUCN and SSC memberships and the final meeting of the Criteria Review Working Group.

Glacial lakes and glacial lake outburst floods in Nepal
   

This report is a systematic and comprehensive study of the status of glacial lakes in Nepal and an assessment of the hazard they pose and of the vulnerability of downstream people and property. The report concludes by proposing some preliminary steps for development of a national strategy for response to the hazard, and emphasizing the need for applying the experience obtained towards initiation of a region-wide international response.

Culture and wetlands in the Mediterranean : an evolving story

The book is the result of a four-year research project (2007-2011), which concerned mainly the implementation in the Mediterranean Region of the Ramsar Guidance on Culture and Wetlands. It was carried out by Med-INA, the Mediterranean Institute on Nature and Anthropos, with the financial support of the MAVA Foundation. This multi-author book follows a structure that echoes the Ramsar Guidance and investigates the benefits that can result from following its objectives, analysing various sectors of human activities and more than 20 wetland sites. In addition, it identifies areas in which the guidance provided needs to be strengthened or others that are not yet covered.

This document represents the consensus of views from forestry and wildlife conservation agencies in Nigeria and Cameroon, local and international nongovernmental conservation organizations, and university-based researchers who met at a series of workshops in Cameroon and Nigeria to formulate a set of actions that, if implemented, will increase the long-term survival prospects of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee. 
Measuring global poverty : toward a pro-poor approach

This book lays out the key contemporary debates in poverty measurement, and provides a new analytical framework for thinking about poverty conception and measurement. Rather than trying to find some essential meaning of poverty, the author recommends explicitly reflecting on the purposes served by the concept and the values that do and should inform our conceptions and measures. After reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of five competing conceptions of poverty and their corresponding measures, the book concludes with specific recommendations for the future. Poverty measurement should be developed through a process of public reason that gives weight to the voices of those individuals who are most marginalized and deprived. The author suggests new values, desiderata, and candidate indicators that should be used in a pro-poor poverty measure.

Agrobiodiversity, which includes the diversity of plants, animals, fish, trees and microbes that are used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture, is the foundation of sustainable agricultural development. But demand has grown for new knowledge and skills to address the multifunctionality of sustainable agriculture and the interconnectedness of biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and human health. To address the need for this new capacity, Biodiversity International and its partners in higher education networks started a process to analyze the knowledge and skills required to equip a new cadre of researchers, development experts, policy specialists and teachers to carry out interdisciplinary research and development interventions on agricultural biodiversity. The result is this publication -- an annotated "road map" for educational organizations interested in introducing an agrobiodiversity component into the academic curriculum of courses and programmes at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Through the long efforts of what began as a group of French volunteers, an exemplary Bat Action Plan has been produced by the Society for the Protection of Prespa at the transboundary level, significantly increasing the limited knowledge on bats in the Transboundary Prespa Park. For the countries sharing the Prespa Basin -- Greece, Macedonia, and Albania -- this work is an example of the importance and wealth of the Prespa area but also of the high quality results that good cooperation among partners and scientists can produce. This Action Plan provides new scientific data as well as important information on conservation activities and mitigation measures that should be take to preserve bats and their habitats.
