Mitigating biodiversity impacts of sports events

There is growing recognition of the need for sport and sports events to be conducted in socially and environmentally responsible ways and this is reflected in the attitudes of governments, public authorities and regulators. This means that taking a proactive and diligent approach to environmental management is a vital part of the sport sector’s licence to operate as well as growing and sustaining fan bases. Biodiversity conservation should be a key element in any environmentally responsible approach to sports event management. These guidelines focus on the often complex links between biodiversity and sport, and highlight that sports events can also benefit biodiversity. Each event offers an opportunity to raise public awareness of the value of nature and influence attitudes towards biodiversity and its conservation. These guidelines provide an overview of the issues and risks. They also offer help on how to make informed choices in avoiding harmful impacts and achieving positive outcomes. All parties involved in the planning and delivery of sports events are responsible for understanding and managing the potential biodiversity impacts and opportunities to ensure no lasting harm, and preferably a lasting positive legacy.

Les Lignes directrices abordent la planification et la gestion des aires protégées à gouvernance privée (APP). Ce guide est destiné principalement aux professionnels et décideurs, intéressés ou impliqués dans le domaine des APP. Des lignes directrices sont proposées sur tous les aspects de la création, de la gestion et de l’établissement de rapports concernant les APP. Ce guide fourni des informations sur les principes et meilleures pratiques dans le cadre des APP, illustrés par des exemples tirés de différentes régions du monde. L’objectif de ce manuel est d’ébaucher l’application de politiques et principes de l’UICN afin d’améliorer l’efficacité et des résultats de conservation. Tous les conseils ne s’appliquent pas nécessairement à tous les contextes sociaux, politiques et économiques. Cependant, tirer les enseignements des meilleures pratiques du monde entier et étudier comment celles-ci peuvent être intégrées au niveau local ou national, peut améliorer la probabilité de succès dans la conservation privée, et suggérer la meilleure façon d’améliorer les conditions pour favoriser les APP et donc de capitaliser sur les opportunités qu’elles représentent. 
Cómo las redes interinstitucionales transforman paisajes

Para que la restauración de paisajes forestales (RPF) sea sostenible y responda a las múltiples necesidades medioambientales y del desarrollo, es necesario que exista diálogo y coordinación entre los diferentes sectores, 
agentes e instituciones. En las iniciativas de RPF está implicada una amplia variedad de grupos y sectores de partes interesadas muy diversas –como gobiernos (sub)nacionales, empresas agrícolas y silvícolas, instituciones de investigación, organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONG), comunidades tradicionales, terratenientes y empresas–, con intereses y prioridades distintos y, a menudo, contrapuestos. En este estudio se identifican los factores clave relacionados con el éxito y el impacto de los MCI para la RPF, y se exponen los elementos que deben tenerse en cuenta al desarrollar nuevos MCI o evaluar los actualmente existentes. Para ello, utiliza un marco de evaluación de redes adaptado y se apoya en cinco ejemplos de MCI que operan a diferentes escalas en Espírito Santo (Brasil), Colombia, El Salvador, los estados de la Península de Yucatán (México) y Perú. En la sección final de este informe se presenta un paquete de herramientas, principios y preguntas guía que se pueden utilizar para desarrollar nuevos MCI para la RPF o para evaluar los existentes.

This report seeks to share understanding of the roots of plastic polymer pathways to the Baltic Sea, then moves to defining the nature and extent of the problem, then passes to the impacts on sea ice habitat and marine species of the region. This is followed by a shift to focus on a sense of what is currently happening in the business world to slow or stop plastic effects, what is possible to anticipate for the future, and which responses from industry and regulation by government policy will be most plausible and effective in mitigating the impacts. This synthesis of the five reports fits both the thematic and geographic lines of inquiry and investigation, but it also combines them in a way that offers decision-makers a sound basis for taking measured action.

Illegal trade in wildlife has increased dramatically over the past decade; however, so have enforcement efforts aimed at mitigating this threat. Successful enforcement often involves the seizure and confiscation of wild species from diverse taxa of plants, animals and fungi. These confiscations may be parts of non-living specimens in the form of artefacts, food or medicinal products but, in many cases, they involve live individuals. With increasingly frequent confiscations and often high numbers of individuals involved, it is important that best practice management approaches are followed to maximise the conservation role and the individual welfare of these plants and animals. These Guidelines aim to provide guidance on this best practice.

Sie sind wichtige Zufluchts-, Brut-, Überwinterungs- oder Nahrungsstätten für Tausende von Arten. Um die Biodiversität und damit die Resilienz eines Waldbestandes zu stärken, ist es sinnvoll, Baummikrohabitate zu erkennen und sie bei Waldeingriffen zu erhalten und zu fördern. Dieser Taschenführer beschreibt die 47 Typen von Baummikrohabitaten, die in 15 Gruppen und 7 Formen unterteilt sind. Er enthält auch empfohlene Schwellenwerte für Aufnahmen oder Inventare sowie Informationen über Häufigkeit und Entstehungsgeschwindigkeit jedes Baummikrohabitats.

Un arbre-habitat est un arbre qui porte au moins un dendromicrohabitat. Un dendromicrohabitat est une singularité morphologique portée par un arbre et qui est utilisée par des espèces parfois hautement spécialisées, au moins durant une partie de leur cycle de vie. Ils constituent des refuges, des lieux de reproduction, d’hibernation et de nutrition cruciaux pour des milliers d’espèces. Afin de renforcer la biodiversité et donc d’augmenter la résilience d’un peuplement, il est judicieux de connaître les dendromicrohabitats, de les préserver et de les promouvoir lors des interventions forestières. Ce guide décrit les 47 types de dendromicrohabitats, organisés en 15 groupes et 7 formes. Il contient également les seuils recommandés pour leur inventaire, ainsi que des informations sur la fréquence et la vitesse de remplacement dans le peuplement de chaque dendromicrohabitat.

Aktifitas manusia yang pesat menyebabkan perubahan habitat dan ekosistem yang secara langsung maupun target_idak langsung, yang berdampak pada populasi spesies. Untuk menjamin kelestarian mereka, semakin banyak spesies yang membutuhkan panduan manajemen, baik secara individu maupun populasi (secara keseluruhan). Perencanaan konservasi spesies yang efektif harus mempertimbangkan segala aspek untuk menentukan tindakan apa saja yang perlu diambil dalam menjawab tuntutan konservasi. Manajemen ex situ adalah salah satu upaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk konservasi spesies yang terancam. Tujuan dari panduan ini adalah untuk menyediakan pedoman praktis dalam mengevaluasi kesesuaian dan persyaratan suatu manajemen ex situ demi memenuhi target konservasi suatu spesies.

Accelerating biodiversity commitments through forest landscape restoration

This document provides guidance, information and evidence about how forest landscape restoration (FLR) can accelerate progress towards achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, tackling the current challenges of maintaining a balance of land productivity and ecosystem integrity. The main objective is to increase awareness and demonstrate how the planning and implementation of FLR ambitions, especially under the Bonn Challenge and through the application of the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), can translate into concrete and reportable contributions to the goals and strategic actions set out in countries’ National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs).
World Heritage thematic study for Central Asia

The World Heritage thematic study for Central Asia has been produced as a contribution to supporting the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Central Asia. It provides a response to a Decision of the World Heritage Committee in order to identify outstanding areas with potential for future nomination to the World Heritage List with primary focus on criteria (ix) and (x) at the regional scale. The approach applied in this study, focusing on criteria (ix) and (x), follows that from the 2013 study on terrestrial biodiversity and the World Heritage List. Criteria (ix) and (x) are clearly the primary ones for recognition of extant biodiversity values, and they have been applied to a wide range of biodiversity features, including ecosystems, species, and ecological and/or biological processes. Although this study is an initial assessment, most areas and sites recommended here have appeared repeatedly as being of particular interest for biodiversity conservation during the work process, whether through literature analysis or in discussions with experts and specialists. The recommendations reflect the current level of knowledge that should be strengthened in the future, to ensure that the identified areas and sites are well supported with the necessary data and empirical evidence to address the requirements of the Operational Guidelines. 
Gender-based violence and environment linkages

Rooted in discriminatory gender norms and laws and shrouded in impunity, gender-based violence (GBV) occurs in all societies as a means of control, subjugation and exploitation that further reinforces gender inequality. This publication establishes that these patterns of gender-based abuse are observed across environmental contexts, affecting the security and well-being of nations, communities and individuals, and jeopardising meeting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While linkages between GBV and environmental issues are complex and multi-layered, these threats to human rights and healthy ecosystems are not insurmountable. This analysis reveals the complex and interlinking nature of GBV across three main contexts: access to and control of natural resources; environmental pressure and threats; and environmental action to defend and conserve ecosystems and resources. This publication aims to raise awareness and engage actors working in environmental and sustainable development, gender equality, and GBV policymaking and programming spheres to inform rights-based, gender-responsive approaches to environmental policy, programmes and projects.

Le plastique est bon marché, durable, léger et malléable, ses usages sont donc quasi illimités. Les inconvénients du plastique deviennent cependant de plus en plus évidents : il fuit massivement dans les rivières et les océans, avec des effets dévastateurs sur les écosystèmes marins et les activités économiques qui en dépendent. Le présent rapport est l’un des premiers de ce type à quantifier les fuites de microplastiques primaires et à montrer qu’elles constituent l’un des principaux facteurs de la présence de plastique dans les océans.
The marine plastic footprint

Plastic pollution originates from various sources. While many industries are taking steps to reduce their dependence on plastic, there is currently no reliable methodology to forecast specifically the extent of the marine plastic leakage from an industry or a country and map potential leakage hotspots throughout the value chain. This report offers, for the first time, a comprehensive framework to measure the inventory of marine plastic leakage, step-by-step and using a life-cycle perspective. It also offers generic data that can be used to calculate marine plastic leakage for a defined list of identified sources, including plastic waste, textile fibres, tyre dust, micro beads in cosmetics, and fishing nets. The approach discussed in this report focuses on inventorying plastic flows into the marine environment only. It does not look at plastic releases into the terrestrial environment, or any ecosystem or human health impacts that may result from marine plastic leakage.
