This is the first national Red List assessment of the 85 mammalian species, reported from Jordan. The aim was to assess the national conservation status of the terrestrial mammals in Jordan. The information provided in this report will help to put local conservation priorities into a national context, thus maximizing the effectiveness of conservation measures, and facilitating the development of integrated national conservation strategies. It summarizes results for terrestrial mammals, and provides the first overview of the conservation status of these species to follow the IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status.

   

China’s Yangtze river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer), was declared likely to be extinct in 2006, due to threats in the wild such as habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear and ship strikes, which were not effectively dealt with using the management tools available prior to that time. Mexico’s vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a porpoise found only in the Upper Gulf of California, will become extinct in the near future if the illegal fishery to obtain fish swim bladders for illicit international markets is not eliminated very soon. In both of these cases, it took only a short time for the population to decrease from hundreds to tens of animals. This highlights the urgency of gaining information and taking action to anticipate and prevent such rapid declines in other threatened species and populations of small cetaceans. A workshop, “Ex situ Options for Cetacean Conservation” (ESOCC) was held in Nuremberg, Germany, 14-18 December 2018, to start preparing such actions. This report contains the executive summary of the main report of the 2018 workshop in English, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.

Les principaux rapports internationaux récents ont mis en évidence l’impact alarmant des systèmes de production alimentaire sur les changements climatiques, les terres et la biodiversité. This document illuminates the diverse values of experiences and connections with nature and their relationship to positive behaviours towards the Earth. In 2018, led by Dr. Cheryl Charles of the Children & Nature Network, 14 co-authors, and more than 60 reviewers from 22 nations on 5 continents, came together through the #NatureForAll network to collaboratively produce the publication Home to Us All: How Connecting with Nature Helps Us Care for Ourselves and the Earth. Much of the language and many of the same ideas and examples from that new and important publication have been incorporated into this summary document. Designed for a broad audience, this short summary aims to share highlights of the most current and compelling evidence for connecting people with nature to aid decision makers from diverse sectors across the world in implementing policies and practices that will help humans thrive in harmony with nature for decades to come.

   

A unified classification of alien taxa based on the magnitude of their environmental impacts has been developed in response to these issues. EICAT (Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa) is a simple, objective and transparent method for classifying alien taxa in terms of the magnitude of their detrimental environmental impacts in recipient areas. Based on evidence on the impacts they have been causing on native taxa in their introduced range, alien taxa are classified into one of five impact categories. Each of these five impact categories represents a different impact magnitude, depending on the level of biological organisation of the native biota impacted (individual, population or community) and the reversibility of this impact.

Recent major international reports have highlighted the alarming impact of food production systems on climate change, land and biodiversity. This report shows that common ground between the agriculture and conservation sectors for mutually beneficial action exists, and that there is great potential for widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that can meet our needs for food, feed, fibre, and energy. More widely, sustainable agriculture can contribute to food, water security, climate regulation and other objectives, supporting progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and other international targets for climate change, biodiversity and land degradation.

This report intends to identify the opportunities and barriers of introducing and scaling up of FLR into selected pilot landscapes of Ethiopia: the districts (or woredas used as a synonym throughout this document) of Sodo and Meket, located in SNNP and Amhara regions respectively. This work is expected to accelerate decision-making processes for landscape restoration implementation, including the identification of enabling conditions at all levels of government necessary for long-term restoration success. It also aims at building support for expanding the lessons and experiences of Sodo and Meket to other districts and landscapes at the regional level. To achieve these objectives, the report presents the results of the application of the Restoration Diagnostic Tool (WRI).

The Protected Areas Benefits Assessment Tool+ (PA-BAT+) aims to collate and assess information about the overall benefits from conservation and protection in protected areas. It can also be used in other area-based conservation sites. This technical guidance provides a quick overview of why understanding the benefits from protected areas is important, provides a detailed guide to using the PA-BAT+ and explains how to understand and use the results. Seven case studies outline different uses and adaptations of the tool in Croatia, Colombia, Turkey, Myanmar, USA and Ethiopia, as well as describing the use of the tool across natural World Heritage sites.

This guidance is co-developed by UNEP, IUCN, and the Life Cycle Initiative. It aims to provide a methodological framework for identifying ‘hotspots’ of plastic pollution, finding the leakages and their impacts along the entire plastic value chain, and then providing recommendations for action once these hotspots are identified. The guidance takes a holistic approach, covering the analysis of major types of plastic polymers, products, sectors, and geographical locations; the recommendations contain comprehensive sets of instruments and solutions from both upstream and downstream perspectives. It enables countries, regions, and cities to establish a baseline for benchmarking and tracking the progress of suggested interventions. Alongside with the guidance, modules and tools to help users for data collection, modelling, calculations and developing interventions are developed.
